Few years ago someone accidentally sent some Greek air force AMRAAM's for maintenance with cheapest bidder doing shipping. I can't recall did Greek AF, Raytheon itself or whoever does their subcontracting in Greece who sent it. Basically cheapest way to get bunch of missiles to US was air freight from Germany and cheapest way to get 'em there was with ferry and truck via Italy and Austria/Switzerland.

It isnt about China or Russia copying the Hellfire, since they have long ago similiar ATGMs for their helicopters in service, but it is about them getting hard facts on the specs of the seeker and guidance technology, the most sensitive part of the whole issue. With their knowledge about the secret laser-frequency that the seeker uses, they can tune their countermeasures and jamming/decoy systems to defeat all Hellfires of that same generation.

Considering the Soviets never developed a good hydrophone net, and the Atlantic is such poor conditions for a hydrophone the US military had trouble finding the boat quick, it's easy to conclude the Russians would have been in the dark.
Sending a bunch of ships out near the Azores pinging active sonar probably got their attention pretty well, but at that point the sub was already declared missing.

See, like I said, you know fuck-all about Russian subs. Their nuϲⅼear subs are as quiet as their diesel subs. Why? Because all of their new nuϲⅼear subs are designed differently from American nuϲⅼear subs. Whereas American subs use steam to power the propulsion directly, Russian nuϲⅼear reactors charge batteries which in turn power electrical motors. That means they're an order of magnitude quieter (and also safer but that's beside the point).

AFAIK there are only 2 inert variants of the Hellfire:

-The M36 (CATM-114), which is used for captive carry training, so doesn't have a rocket motor
-The M34 (DATM-114), which is the ground handling training aid - so is literally just a piece of ballast in the shape of a hellfire

The CATM-114 has a seeker etc. - it's the one in OP's image. But if the "inert" missile sent to Cuba is a DATM-114, it's a non-story.

I'm pretty sure that if China wants a good look at a hellfire seeker, Israel or Pakistan have probably already obliged them.
