Red dot for the AKM?

If you know what you're doing and really wanted to, you could hit up to 1,000 yards with a well built ak and decent ammo.

You can easily make 600 yard shots with ironsights and even easier with a red dot, especially something like an aimpoint with settings to holdover.

That being said, 7.62x39 does have a large drop at 550-600ish yards.

You'd want to either get a low profile gas block rail for a micro dot scout mount or a railed dust cover. Anything higher like in pic you posted is going to make you have to put your fucking chin on the stock to even see through it, and they don't hold zeros very well.

Aimpoint T1 is actually one of the candidates I've been eying at lately. Seems to fit my budget well too.

I'm not using my AK for sharp shooting. Haven't even tried it past 100 meters, so in that sense those optics seem to fit the bill just fine.

I'd still prefer to have the optic to be mounted on a picatinny-railed quick mount if possible. I have one for my Vepr .308 with a 3-9x scope, it sits very low on top of the gun, and holds zero damn well.

On the related note, any major differences between those scope-like and these flat screen type holos/ red dots? I'd assume this type would be slightly more vulnerable for damage if crawling innawoods and so?

You can hit things easily past 100 with an ak without an optic. Don't tell me that's why you want one.

Consider either an ultimak or an rs 301/2/3 siderail, both sit low enough to cowitness and hold zero well.

For the flat optics, most of them are worthless airshit like ncstar. The only decent flat optic is the c-mores which are used a lot in competition guns. The trijicon rmrs from what I've seen are built like tanks.

Tube optics are definately more rugged by design.

Nope. I know what they're capable of. I've shot a borrowed one up to 300m and hit man-sized targets with no issues.

The optic would be for easier/faster aiming. The irons on my gun are good enough to hit stuff, but front sight's tiny bit canted, requiring the post to be kept at very left end. Hinders the sighting a little bit.

Thanks for your input though; seems like T1 might be my next purchase.

The best option is getting RS Regulate mount with an aimpoint pro for a total of about 500 ish bucks. RS regulate mounts are just awesome and it lets you get a good co-witness through the optic, which is hard to get on an AK.

There are various other options that work, but I feel rs+aimpoint is the best for the money

Also I think I have the same setup as op picture on my WASR. The shitty sight mark with that mount will work and is cheap, but your cheek weld will become a chin weld, and the sight mark starts to break after 800 ish rounds depending on how much shock it takes from handling.

Sounds good. If you want the aimpoint pro just have them make a 30 mm ring with about double the surface area as a normal 30 mm ring for stability. Don't quite have measurements on hand on the height of the ring from the dust cover, but it's very close for that co-witness. You may want to lend them your rifle for a custom fit as well, or make sure they make them slightly adjustable, as not all AKs are 100% the same as far as centering an overhanging scope ring from the side rail, and you'll REALLY want it perfect.

Actually, forget what I said about 30 mm ring, didn't notice you wanted the micro. They have specialized mounts for those I'm sure your smith guy can produce.

You just don't want your mount to be to a picantinny rail because that will be a fuck ton of unneeded height for cheek weld.

I'm not dead-set on having a micro, but it seems like a decent choice at the moment. I will check my options and do the final decision in near future.

Also got a Mossberg 500A pump.

I'm suggesting a PK-AT (pic related). It's positioned a bit left of the receiver, so it leaves the iron sights open for situations when optics fail or battery dies. Also the sight drums are quick-adjustable, so you don't need tools or anything, just hands.

At most, stick to com-block sights like a cobra. That COD sight you have in the OP pic kills the look of the rifle. Not to mention that ugly as rail.

I usually cap my shooting at 400-ish and it's not even beginning to drop enough to make me care, but have shot aks out to over 1000 with some 4x optics.
After that 600-ish mark, it starts to really drop like a rock. I really had to adjust a lot more for every 100 or so yards after that.
