Just be aware of what they can and cannot guarantee you.

The CAN guarantee you a spot in a certain A-school. They can't guarantee you anything beyond that, just like you can't guarantee you'll be successful.

You can't be guaranteed a certain ship if you're a sailor. If you're a Machinist's Mate (Nuclear) when you get out of prototype and you volunteer for Submarine duty, but an aircraft carrier needs you, guess where you go?

And yes, having security clearance is a nice bonus when applying for jobs as a defense contractor.

If I go through AFROTC, am I doomed to a desk job? Am I better off just getting my Bachelors then enlisting?

I'd be willing to do OCS or Green to Gold down the road, but I really just hate life as a civilian.

Yes, I get that I have freedoms that most guys in will kill for, but I really cannot stand being a wageslave, surrounded by people I don't like.

From what my brother (artillery) has told me, even though you get treated like shit by your highers, and that some things the army does makes zero sense, he has so many great, funny stories of all the times he's had, and he hasn't even got to his unit yet.

I'm not fooling myself. I know I will get treated like shit, be bored all the time, and get subjugated to shit that doesn't make sense.

But to me, it sounds like you make bonds as strong as brothers, that never really go away. And you can live a lifestyle that doesn't require applying to a gorillion different jobs and worrying about rent or food bills.

I'm not saying it's easy to be military, just very different than being completely independent, and that's kind of what I want.

Anyone else know what I'm talking about or am I just rambling?

However, the choice really isn't military vs university. Any half-decent non-shitbag in the military takes college classes while they serve... it's going to be slower, but it's entirely possible to finish a 4 year degree by the end of a 6 year enlistment. Just don't let anyone talk you into some fly-by-night University of Phoenix or similar shitty school.

Pick a day any day.
Do 100 throughout the day (I'm up to over 200 but start small so you don't get any kind of overtraining injury)
Start off with your max. Say 30.
Always go until you cant anymore with your sets. When you go to failure, put your knees on the ground and go to failure with "girl pushups"
This got me from 30 consecutive to 55 in less than 2 weeks.
Same kind of thing with situps.
Just give a day or 2 between workout days. Listen to your body, don't workout while still sore.
Running, just run more. Take your rest days. Stay consistent.
Listen to your legs. The last thing you want is shin splints.

Commissioning in May. Going sub Nuke, have my interview with the admiral in February. Really regretting not playing attention in physics & calculus class. I'm gonna have to relearn physics and calculus in like 2 weeks so I can pass my interview.

I figured as a comp sci major, I'd be safe from getting Nuke drafted. I was wrong.

I went in took the practice test and went to take the asvab tomorrow, after that I took my medical about a week later and got my contract. That was all about a month ago and my ship date is Jan 26.

Well the asvab I just took and left. The medical, you go to a hotel (at least I did) the night before. They briefed us about not causing a scene at the hotel, don't be shit heads, here's your breakfast and dinner passes.

After that the next morning I ate breakfast and took a bus to meps, we get there and got lined up outside the entrance. They told us to not bring in any weapons or drugs and that this would be our last chance to get rid of them, if they found any we were going home.

After that we got our passes and some people volunteered to get airborne physicals, and we were sent to basically like a classroom. We had a big ass navy guy come in and brief us about not being shit heads, shutting the fuck up, and listening to what people had to say as well as some stuff about sexual harassment. He guided us through filling out a form about our medical history, shit like allergies and whatever.

After that I went through the medical itself, waiting hours and hours between each event. Piss test, blood draw, hearing test, vision test, and finally the general physical and mobility shit. Not in any particular order, except for the physical and mobility shit being last.

The only real time after that I answered questions was during the general physical, you're in a room with the doctor there and he asks you some more general medical stuff, mental health issues in the past, whatever and he checks your heart and shit. If you have an airborne physical you get some more questions and have to demonstrate that you can pop your ears.

Finally after that I got my contract and had to do another interview for my clearance, he asked me if I had any family members that were foreigners, had any debt, had any criminal record. Stuff like that, drugs, whatever.

The recruiters made it seem like they were gonna fuck you in the ass at meps but it wasn't really that bad, the worst part about it was just going in terrified due to the shit my recruiters were saying.

The way to do this is to ask said people (maybe a Colonel in the reserves or something, etc) to sit down with them over a lunch and have them get a feel for your character and if they're comfortable writing the letter. Your recruiter can probably put you in contact with these people.

Don't do like a Senator or something you wrote a letter to, they want people who would know you well enough to make the call. A glowing review from a Colonel that took the afternoon to talk with you will mean WAY more than a cookie-cutter Congressman letter.

Really, there's no difference. Just usual inter-service banter. I'm from a Navy family, so it was always going to be the Navy for me.

Being Doc wasn't just making sure your Marines are physically healthy. (FYI, the only true 'Docs' are greenside Corpsmen.) Because you weren't a Marine, they treated you as a sort of neutral observer and a psychiatrist. Sometimes they asked me to settle disputes, so you can add amateur arbitrator to the list of responsibilities. I also enlisted when I was 24, so I was a bit older than the grunts in my platoon. I was a sort of older cousin to them as well.

When we went to Iraq and started seeing combat (scary as shit, by the way) the psychiatrist role was ramped way up. Marines, by nature, don't trust health care professionals, but Doc isn't a health care professional, he's Doc.

Here's the difference between Army SF and other SOF doing DA missions:

Honestly Muhhhreeeens might get shit on for some of the stupid shit they do (and I think they're too up their own ass with the cult to really be "good" at the intel process as an entity) but even USMC intel MOS would "translate".

Keep in mind you need a degree though, and while you'll be essentially doing the same work as a civilian with a Bachelor's in an entry level analyst or collector position with a civilian agency, your experience may vary wildly depending on what type of unit you go to ("pure" intel unit or an S2 in a line company, and if you're at an S2 or G2, or even J2 in my experience) and your MOS.

You could do some completely cool shit, you can do some completely stupid shit that has nothing to do with your MOS, you could hate your MOS, or, like me, you could initially hate your MOS and want to reclass, then deploy and find out how important it is, how good you are at it, and would do it for fucking free.

But no matter what you do, if you want it to "translate" to civilian street, you need a degree. If you are going to look for contractor positions you need at least an Associate's due to the change in hiring requirements that happened a few years ago. If you go to a civilian agency you're going to need a Bachelor's.

Keep in mind though even with your experience you'll be going into entry level positions where your peers may be more than a few years younger than you and straight out of college with completely unrelated degrees (STEM, English Lit).

Ten years is the HYT (highest year of tenure) for enlisted. By then if you haven't made E5 you're ineligible for reenlistment.

Its pretty nice too if you get a marine unit because most marines hold corpsmen to a very high regard. just took the Kaplan 2016 ASVAB Practice Test, my AFQT score was 120. i read that they take this score and average it against 6000 others who took the test to give you your "raw score" in percentile form.
i was pretty stoked to get such a decent score, because i need at least a 66 for the job i want. but the average/percentile thing has me worried. supposedly only 16% of test takers get higher than a 59. thoughts?

Yes, although there's a lot easier ways depending on how long you've been in. If you just tell them they're depressed, the first thing they're going to do is try to get you help. Separation would be way down the line.

Army medics are basically EMT trained, where as HMs learn all that plus a bunch of other stuff.

The AFQT should itself be a percentile score, so 120 makes no sense. That would mean you scored better than 120% of test takers, which is of course, impossible.

Not sure about the 66/59(if only 16% scored better than a 59 then that would mean it's not a percentile score), but Kaplan definitely didn't give you the correct score.

ROTC or Academy is how most pilots get in, but you can OCS in, it's just hard to find a good recruiter who does your papers right. If your major involves engineering there is heavy pressure to be a flyer or nuclear.

Ten year commitment as a Navy or Air Force pilot. It's an interesting job though. Personally I lean more towards intelligence or special operations because they're a better fit for my personality type.

Be aware that pilots have a certain... personality. Which is a nice way of saying that they can be assholes with a messiah complex. But a near insane level of self confidence is necessary to do the job sometimes. If you want it though get it.

If you want to go and shoot people and do cool, operator shit then join a rugby club, become a youth leader or a leader of some group, get a career, become independent, get some uni degree, exercise every day and then when you're 24 and fit as fuck go and apply for commando

Even if you go rifleman, infantry, you will be lucky to fire your weapon once for every mountain you have to climb.

Being in combat wouldn't even be fun. We are fighting unconventional wars. An interesting combat scenario is getting shot at, returning fire in the general direction of the enemy and shooting at specks you can barely even see. Maybe you'll see a dead body or two. That's the best case. All the other times you'll be getting shot at from places you don't know and waiting around.

Maybe... maybe you could be one of the lucky ones to go artillery observer and get attached to some special forces unit or to some Americans and have a job that doesn't just involve getting shot at.

You can switch which job you're applying for at any time, I switched from Army Combat Engineer to Navy Marine Technician when I found out Combat Engineer wasn't in demand, this was like 6 weeks into my application.
