Different guy,
but fuck I went and talked to a recruiter today and I knew what he was saying seemed too good to be true.
Any common lies you know about that I should look out for?
Also, will the security clearance that comes with being a nuke give me an advantage in finding a job at a defense contractor after Navy?
>>
>>28431169
>Any common lies you know about that I should look out for?

Just be aware of what they can and cannot guarantee you.

The CAN guarantee you a spot in a certain A-school. They can't guarantee you anything beyond that, just like you can't guarantee you'll be successful.

You can't be guaranteed a certain ship if you're a sailor. If you're a Machinist's Mate (Nuclear) when you get out of prototype and you volunteer for Submarine duty, but an aircraft carrier needs you, guess where you go?

And yes, having security clearance is a nice bonus when applying for jobs as a defense contractor.

If I go through AFROTC, am I doomed to a desk job? Am I better off just getting my Bachelors then enlisting?

How much could I really hate my life if I tried to make it 20 years as 11b?

I'd be willing to do OCS or Green to Gold down the road, but I really just hate life as a civilian.

Yes, I get that I have freedoms that most guys in will kill for, but I really cannot stand being a wageslave, surrounded by people I don't like.

From what my brother (artillery) has told me, even though you get treated like shit by your highers, and that some things the army does makes zero sense, he has so many great, funny stories of all the times he's had, and he hasn't even got to his unit yet.

I'm not fooling myself. I know I will get treated like shit, be bored all the time, and get subjugated to shit that doesn't make sense.

But to me, it sounds like you make bonds as strong as brothers, that never really go away. And you can live a lifestyle that doesn't require applying to a gorillion different jobs and worrying about rent or food bills.

I'm not saying it's easy to be military, just very different than being completely independent, and that's kind of what I want.

Anyone else know what I'm talking about or am I just rambling?
>>
Do I 11x with option 40 or airforce 9S100?
>>
>>28432475
Cool story, bro.

>>28432498
I'm an Armyfag and know basically nothing about the Navy's promotions.

However, the choice really isn't military vs university. Any half-decent non-shitbag in the military takes college classes while they serve... it's going to be slower, but it's entirely possible to finish a 4 year degree by the end of a 6 year enlistment. Just don't let anyone talk you into some fly-by-night University of Phoenix or similar shitty school.

I'm not fuckin lab rat. Plus most entry level positions pay like 15 an hour. I mostly became a biochemist so I could study how the body works on a molecular level. Nutrition, physiology, that kinda shit. Not to get a job

>>28433566
You have a few hours to do it but there's a deadline and if you can't you gotta go back. They let me go into a stall when I couldn't force it out, though the guy was still basically looking over it and staring at me. It was pretty amusing at that point though.

They let us drink a lot of water too, I would suggest drinking a shit ton once you wake up at the hotel and when you get there if you're really worried about it.
>>
>>28433324
None of them really interest me
And from what I've gathered in /meg/ and my brother, every MOS has some aspect that people will bitch about for infiinity

Intel get locked in dark stuffy rooms, 68w end up wiping asses all day etc etc

Also I guess any combat arm is a bit more "authentic" army, if that makes any sense.

Some other MOS' could be like a 9 to 5 job, whereas anything combat is unique to the military, you can't get those experiences anywhere else.
>>
>>28433634
>>28433601
Thanks guys, that doesnt worry me that much anymore, but i get kinda anxious with that sort of shit, nice to know theyre not douchebags though, and im definitely drinking water before going to bed and since i wake up until i have to pee. Ill basicly force water down my body until i can fucking pee

>>28433497

Should I join Army or Marines as an officer if I want to do HUMINT field job?
>>
>>28433287
The whole concept of enlisting rather than going straight in as an officer is generally a bad idea. If your plan is to be an officer, you should be an officer. Likewise with enlisted.
>>
>>28434147
Is there a waiver I can get for prior marijuana usage?
And if there is, would that waiver also disqualify me from security clearance?
>>
>>28434480
That's the thing, if I enlist I'm guaranteed any MOS I pick, but if I go officer I may end up being some beta bitch boy doing accounting work. I may even have the opportunity to go Airborne, Assault, or RASP.

Then again, the officer pay is way better ...
>>
>>28434153
Marines.
>>
>>28434836
It's not about pay. The jobs are not comparable. Enlisted are specialists; officers are not. It's right there in their classification: Enlisted are identified by military occupational specialty (MOS). Officers instead have an area of concentration (AOC).

If you enlist, you will be a doer. If you commission, you will be a manager. This is why Army officers only receive branch-specific training at the company grade level. At the field grade level and above, all officers attend the same basic schooling because their functions of planning and leading are essentially interchangeable.

A significantly higher percentage of officers attend schools such as airborne, air assault, and ranger when compared to enlisted personnel. I'm not sure I see your argument here.
>>
>>28434147
>>28434825
And I know you guys really dislike weed but I'm 100% never going to smoke again in my life, it was just a couple of times and I'm completely dedicated to the U.S and it's military.

>A significantly higher percentage of officers attend schools such as airborne, air assault, and ranger when compared to enlisted personnel. I'm not sure I see your argument here.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, this doesn't make much sense to me. The ratio of enlisted to officers should be fairly high, therefore the ratio of enlisted to officer that attend "kewl guy skools" should be much higher as well, no?
>>
>>28435236
>Eh, I dunno how much actual leading I want to do...

Don't join the Army then. Leadership is not optional.

>>28435236
>ratio

I said percentage.

Also... depending on the school, even in raw numbers officers might win in certain areas. Ranger school, for example, is very rare for enlisted personnel but mandatory for infantry officers and possible for superior officers of many other branches.
>>
>>28435285
>Don't join the Army then. Leadership is not optional.
Err, maybe I phrased that wrong. I meant more like, I don't know how much middle management supervising I want to do. I get that I'd have to be a leader, even as an enlisted.
>>
Hey guys dont know where else to ask this but I have a problem.

I recently found out that I have a very bad back. A few days ago it dawned on me days ago that I signed up for the draft when I was 18. Who do I talk to about my back with in the Military? Am I going to become exempt from a potential draft? Any help would be appreciated.

>why can't I be assured line duty as a 68W

>I don't want to be a hospital cunt
sorry, 68w is Health Care Specialist, not Combat Medic

>I've heard getting airborne in your contract makes it more likely, is there any truth to this?
Not really. Getting an Option 4 gets you into Jump School, but then you're as likely to turn right around and work in a hospital setting.

Why do you want to be a 68W?
>I want to help people
You can help people in a hospital.
>No, I just want to help people in front line combat.

This is what it all sounds like to me.

For pushups.
Pick a day any day.
Do 100 throughout the day (I'm up to over 200 but start small so you don't get any kind of overtraining injury)
Start off with your max. Say 30.
Always go until you cant anymore with your sets. When you go to failure, put your knees on the ground and go to failure with "girl pushups"
This got me from 30 consecutive to 55 in less than 2 weeks.
Same kind of thing with situps.
Just give a day or 2 between workout days. Listen to your body, don't workout while still sore.
Running, just run more. Take your rest days. Stay consistent.
Listen to your legs. The last thing you want is shin splints.

>>
>>28438669

>>
>>28438757
Well the asvab I just took and left. The medical, you go to a hotel (at least I did) the night before. They briefed us about not causing a scene at the hotel, don't be shit heads, here's your breakfast and dinner passes.

After that the next morning I ate breakfast and took a bus to meps, we get there and got lined up outside the entrance. They told us to not bring in any weapons or drugs and that this would be our last chance to get rid of them, if they found any we were going home.

After that we got our passes and some people volunteered to get airborne physicals, and we were sent to basically like a classroom. We had a big ass navy guy come in and brief us about not being shit heads, shutting the fuck up, and listening to what people had to say as well as some stuff about sexual harassment. He guided us through filling out a form about our medical history, shit like allergies and whatever.

After that I went through the medical itself, waiting hours and hours between each event. Piss test, blood draw, hearing test, vision test, and finally the general physical and mobility shit. Not in any particular order, except for the physical and mobility shit being last.

The only real time after that I answered questions was during the general physical, you're in a room with the doctor there and he asks you some more general medical stuff, mental health issues in the past, whatever and he checks your heart and shit. If you have an airborne physical you get some more questions and have to demonstrate that you can pop your ears.

Finally after that I got my contract and had to do another interview for my clearance, he asked me if I had any family members that were foreigners, had any debt, had any criminal record. Stuff like that, drugs, whatever.

The recruiters made it seem like they were gonna fuck you in the ass at meps but it wasn't really that bad, the worst part about it was just going in terrified due to the shit my recruiters were saying.
>>
>>28438888
Oh yeah and you might wanna practice duckwalking a little bit. I had never even heard of it before and it was pretty unpleasant. I guess that was the worst part beyond being scared shitless and having to piss with a dude staring intently at my junk.

I'll try...

>Pick 11b, go to sand hill, develope hate for TRADOC.

>Spend first contract being lower enlisted, doing lower enlisted things.

>Sweep motor pool, sweep rocks, sweep grass NOT FUCKING KIDDING.

>Walk for 12 miles with bone crushing gear so much you don't even care that it hurts like fuck at some point.

>Get promoted to SPC, become sick call ranger because fuck the army.

>ETS before you ever go to board for promotion, because fuck the army.
Drink self to death, trying to find happiness wherever you can, learn how to kill people, except you won't get to use those neat skills because you spent everyday of your enlistment in garrison because "Peace time"

Or deploy, and stay mad for 9-18 months patrolling streets and praying to god you're not gonna get fucked over by a random IED, take small arms fire from time to time, except you never find out where it came from, so you just go back home, mad, not even qaulifing for the CIB, because leadership never wrote up the 1 time you took small arms fire, i'm rambling now.

Enjoy.

Kind of? I guess. The point is to help people, not just help people in a place where you can garner glory. On the other hand, glory is one of the reasons for enlisting in the first place.

It's probably different for me because I enlisted before 9/11 and in an environment where glory in battle was something no one considered. I was a Corpsman with a Marine infantry platoon and it was a very different before and after 9/11.

Go talk to a recruiter about it. If your END GOAL is to fly helicopters, don't let them talk you into a 15 Series enlisted job and say "you'll work your way up".

Way easier to just join as a Warrant and get that flight training immediately.

The way to do this is to ask said people (maybe a Colonel in the reserves or something, etc) to sit down with them over a lunch and have them get a feel for your character and if they're comfortable writing the letter. Your recruiter can probably put you in contact with these people.

Don't do like a Senator or something you wrote a letter to, they want people who would know you well enough to make the call. A glowing review from a Colonel that took the afternoon to talk with you will mean WAY more than a cookie-cutter Congressman letter.

Well, I can't speak to the Army, but if it's anything like the Navy, you will not have much say in terms of where you get assigned.

The extent of my options were "green" or "blue" in terms of where I wanted to serve. Some of the Army 68Ws I've known were absolute PT studs and got sent to hospital duty. Even in two cases guys who got Ranger tabs, hoping to join the Regiment, and instead were congratulated on their achievement and shipped right back to their original units.

But, if not being guaranteed a line assignment would prevent you from wanting to be a medic, maybe you should re-evaluate why you want to be a medic in the first place.

This is not to discourage you from enlisting as a 68W, by any means. (Though the Navy's Hospital Corps is patently superior.) I would not want to have done anything else. It was the best experience of my life.

>>
>>28441978
Being in the Navy is superior to being in the Army. Being a Corpsman to Marines is superior to being a 68W to soldiers.

Really, there's no difference. Just usual inter-service banter. I'm from a Navy family, so it was always going to be the Navy for me.

Being Doc wasn't just making sure your Marines are physically healthy. (FYI, the only true 'Docs' are greenside Corpsmen.) Because you weren't a Marine, they treated you as a sort of neutral observer and a psychiatrist. Sometimes they asked me to settle disputes, so you can add amateur arbitrator to the list of responsibilities. I also enlisted when I was 24, so I was a bit older than the grunts in my platoon. I was a sort of older cousin to them as well.

When we went to Iraq and started seeing combat (scary as shit, by the way) the psychiatrist role was ramped way up. Marines, by nature, don't trust health care professionals, but Doc isn't a health care professional, he's Doc.
>>
>>28431967
This dude.

While I was deployed to Iraq I made ~$4000.

Our "battle captain" (an O5) was making ~$10000 per month IIRC. His base pay while CONUS was ~$8000 per month. He was prior enlisted infantry so he had more TIS than a non mustang O.

Here's the difference between Army SF and other SOF doing DA missions:

>Army SF, 12 man ODA
>Probably on a COP somewhere working with a company or more of indig doing FID.
>Leading missions all the time.
>Doing UW.
>Working in multiple places where shit is kicking off with only 12 guys and some trucks.

That's not to say SOF aren't steel faced killers that are knocking dicks in the dirt, it's just that the mission places guys in a more isolated situation where they may be far from a QRF with a high op tempo leading 50+ IA/ANA who are part of the PDB/AAH/Taliban during their night job.

Honestly Muhhhreeeens might get shit on for some of the stupid shit they do (and I think they're too up their own ass with the cult to really be "good" at the intel process as an entity) but even USMC intel MOS would "translate".

Keep in mind you need a degree though, and while you'll be essentially doing the same work as a civilian with a Bachelor's in an entry level analyst or collector position with a civilian agency, your experience may vary wildly depending on what type of unit you go to ("pure" intel unit or an S2 in a line company, and if you're at an S2 or G2, or even J2 in my experience) and your MOS.

You could do some completely cool shit, you can do some completely stupid shit that has nothing to do with your MOS, you could hate your MOS, or, like me, you could initially hate your MOS and want to reclass, then deploy and find out how important it is, how good you are at it, and would do it for fucking free.

But no matter what you do, if you want it to "translate" to civilian street, you need a degree. If you are going to look for contractor positions you need at least an Associate's due to the change in hiring requirements that happened a few years ago. If you go to a civilian agency you're going to need a Bachelor's.

Keep in mind though even with your experience you'll be going into entry level positions where your peers may be more than a few years younger than you and straight out of college with completely unrelated degrees (STEM, English Lit).

Ten years is the HYT (highest year of tenure) for enlisted. By then if you haven't made E5 you're ineligible for reenlistment.

those numbers are off the mark in and of themselves, but that said, the reason SF has a higher death rate is simply because there's a lot more of them around to get killed. There's something like 3 SF soldiers for every 1 SEAL, and 10 for every Ranger. It's simple math.

differed means its technically still an open case (albeit sealed). expunged means he had a decent lawyer or a sympathetic judge that basically dropped the charges if the defendant agrees to probation or some shit. normal background checks don't pickk them up but government ones do

Friend of mine had a vendetta against someone else and decided he wanted to spraypaint someone's car. I owed him money at the time so I bought the spraypaint for him. Weeks later a detective is trying to get me to come to the police station for an interview, I decline and am the only one that does. Since they have me on camera buying the spraypaint, they drop the charge on me. Since then I've lived a spotless life. I feel like I could show that I'm deserving if I got the chance but from what I've read it seems like they don't even consider it.

>>28445093

Yeah, the Marines don't have medics and have always used Navy Corpsmen as their enlisted medical support. Its pretty nice too if you get a marine unit because most marines hold corpsmen to a very high regard. I still think its kind of weird since the Army doesn't really do the same for their own, but because of this the Hospital Corps is the navy's most decorated rate.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospital_corpsman

Which is more likely to get to do cool guy shit? 68W or HM?

What kind of deployments do Corpsman usually see? And where?
>>
>>28445477
Yeah, but that still doesn't take away from the accomplishments that the hospital corp achieved.
>>
>>28445203
Security clearance is about trustworthiness, so what kind of charge it is makes a difference. Moronanon above with the mischief... probably won't matter for clearance. Fraud, embezzlement, theft, drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc. are the charges that make people concerned that you might not be trustworthy and could prevent you from getting your clearance.
>>
>>28445505
I guess I don't really hear a whole lot about 68W, I'd say HMs in general are better trained though from what I understand, and know a few more things that the medics. I suppose the deployments really depends on your command though, many corpsmen are stationed to clinics and hospitals while others are attached to marines and even army as individual augmentees, and of course there are ship deployments (which I know least about).
>>
>>28445543
I've heard you can choose what type of corpsman you want to be, hospital, lab, combat etc? Any truth to that, or is it pretty much Needs of the Navy?
>>
>>28445579
Somewhat, a lot more so when you're in the fleet. Once you finish A school you can go right to a C school, say Medlab Tech school, or others Dental for example. Also you usually get some say in what kind of command you want to go to, whether that be marines, a ship or a hospital. Just don't count on anything though.

Forgot to mention: Expunged doesn't mean shit to MEPS. If you were ever in a database, they will see it.

What if you were being investigated for a crime? Not charged, not dropped, expunged etc but simply investigated?

To be fair, with dental corpsmen dental is included in the contract they sign on for, the real people who get screwed are those who get lab straight out of A school (like myself) I dropped out of lab school though. Best decision ever.
>>
>>28445724
If you got fingerprinted, that shit is definitely in there. If not... who knows, probably not.

The problem is... if you lie or say nothing, you're taking a gamble. If that shit comes out when they do your background checks at MEPS or for your clearance, you are srsly fucked. If you weren't convicted, and it wasn't some really serious shit, it's probably better to mention it because it shouldn't affect your enlistment and you'll be covering your ass in the slim chance that they actually do find it later.

>>
>>28445740
If it was a felony conviction, then probably yes, very low BUT I'm not a recruiter and nobody can really say for sure except MEPS and your local recruiting battalion commander. Some of the rules can be finicky and maybe an expunged felony is legit, who knows.

Give it a shot, man, the worst that can happen is you'll waste an hour of your life talking with a recruiter. Go in and lay it on them up front and they'll respect you for being honest and not hiding shit until after they've been working with you for weeks.
>>
>>28445804
Never fingerprinted. An officer may have come to my house and asked me a few question but nothing ever came of it and I never heard anything about it again

Really unlikely that it would come up. Even if it did... there's nothing to it, you weren't arrested or charged.

>>28445891
You "should" be good as long as you have no real bad outstanding debt. They'll see your record eventually and might have a question or two about it if you do a security interview but if it never went far it should be a non-issue.
>>
>>28448584
how bad is real bad debt? a medical bill went to collections a few years back and i'm super close to paying it off, like 3-4 more paychecks, then i'm debt-free. paid off student loans years ago. had an overdraft go to collections for years that sort of fucked up my credit but i knew i was in the right so i didn't pay it(stubborn) and i fought it. well after 8 years i get a $600 check from a class action lawsuit from said bank. but my credit still has it listed
>>
>>28448627
Unexplained outstanding debt is whats bad. If you've got it mostly paid off then you should be fine. Things like student loans, Mortgage, car etc are example of normal debt. If you very recently had the overdraft/collections that would defiantly hurt you for a clearance or if you say had gambling debt for instance. Your credit score "shouldn't" be a factor at all.

Pretty much they want to make sure your not a person who is going to accept a bribe. Someone in crippling debt with an addiction (gambling for example) would be prime for trying to squeeze for info.

Do you love cleaning things, standing around, and getting yelled at for standing around and not cleaning things?

Because that is grunt life in a peacetime military. It doesn't suck because it is hard, it sucks because it is monotonous and doesn't get you anywhere outside the military.

>>28449309

>>28449383

More like cartography vs. analysis. A 12Y would literally make a map of the terrain to assist the commander in planning. A 35G would analyze collected images and put marks on top of that map.

12Y: Here's the valley where this battle might take place, along with the associated terrain features and hazards.

35G: And where I'm placing this red mark is where the enemy tanks are.

just took the Kaplan 2016 ASVAB Practice Test, my AFQT score was 120. i read that they take this score and average it against 6000 others who took the test to give you your "raw score" in percentile form.
i was pretty stoked to get such a decent score, because i need at least a 66 for the job i want. but the average/percentile thing has me worried. supposedly only 16% of test takers get higher than a 59. thoughts?

>>
>>28454370

Yes, although there's a lot easier ways depending on how long you've been in. If you just tell them they're depressed, the first thing they're going to do is try to get you help. Separation would be way down the line.

Army medics are basically EMT trained, where as HMs learn all that plus a bunch of other stuff.

The AFQT should itself be a percentile score, so 120 makes no sense. That would mean you scored better than 120% of test takers, which is of course, impossible.

Not sure about the 66/59(if only 16% scored better than a 59 then that would mean it's not a percentile score), but Kaplan definitely didn't give you the correct score.

ROTC or Academy is how most pilots get in, but you can OCS in, it's just hard to find a good recruiter who does your papers right. If your major involves engineering there is heavy pressure to be a flyer or nuclear.

Ten year commitment as a Navy or Air Force pilot. It's an interesting job though. Personally I lean more towards intelligence or special operations because they're a better fit for my personality type.

Be aware that pilots have a certain... personality. Which is a nice way of saying that they can be assholes with a messiah complex. But a near insane level of self confidence is necessary to do the job sometimes. If you want it though get it.

Artilleryman was priority last year, as you can see from the un-updated website

Please explain why you want to go artilleryman though because nobody wants to be artilleryman. People used to go gun number in hopes of progressing through the ranks and becoming artillery observer but that's pretty much dead now thanks to the split into two different jobs.

>>28459535
I was looking at artilleryman because it was the only combat position that was priority but now it's not.

Go to the ausmilitary forums. There isn't a positive thing about artilleryman but there's a lot of bad.The best response you get is a neutral one.

They haven't been deployed as artillery since vietnam and won't be deployed until a real war breaks out
The labour is hard
There's no room to advance, you'll probably be a wheel spinner until you leave or get promoted to senior wheel spinner and gun cleaner
Real practice is slim because the shells cost a lot
Any war games will probably involve you just moving the guns around a lot rather than firing
>>

>>
>>28459891
I'm on the waiting list for Cav, looking at July intake.
>>
>>28459891
What do YOU want to do?

Saying "I want to be in a combat role" just shows how fucking immature you are

If you want to go and shoot people and do cool, operator shit then join a rugby club, become a youth leader or a leader of some group, get a career, become independent, get some uni degree, exercise every day and then when you're 24 and fit as fuck go and apply for commando

Even if you go rifleman, infantry, you will be lucky to fire your weapon once for every mountain you have to climb.

Being in combat wouldn't even be fun. We are fighting unconventional wars. An interesting combat scenario is getting shot at, returning fire in the general direction of the enemy and shooting at specks you can barely even see. Maybe you'll see a dead body or two. That's the best case. All the other times you'll be getting shot at from places you don't know and waiting around.

Maybe... maybe you could be one of the lucky ones to go artillery observer and get attached to some special forces unit or to some Americans and have a job that doesn't just involve getting shot at.

The ADF recruits candidates from all 3 branches, both officer and general entry, through Defence Force Recruiting, with officer and some specialist roles needing extra steps.

You can switch which job you're applying for at any time, I switched from Army Combat Engineer to Navy Marine Technician when I found out Combat Engineer wasn't in demand, this was like 6 weeks into my application.
