Nothing really gun related most of the day, went to eat breakfast this morning, then lounged for a while watching a movie, got some chores done around the house after that, then enjoyed a nice bourbon.

Also, since Im not poor, I can buy new ammo and not worry about tearing my gun(s) up because I fucked up on reloading. But its a nice skill/tool setup to have if you shoot a lot.

If you decide to go with the XL650 over the 550B, get the casefeeder. It makes the biggest difference in speed compared to the 550B and is what makes the XL650 worth it.

My neighbor bought a bunch of 124gr hornady projectiles a few years ago thinking they were loaded rounds. He gave them to me because he doesn't have a 9mm anymore. I usually load 124gr xtreme round nose so I assume load data should be pretty identical and maybe a little better accuracy with the thicker jacket...

It's a rock tumbler. Works much much better than agitators. It's pricey but lasts fuggin forever. And it's large cause I shoot a lot. Around 28k rounds last year

4.8gr with sr7625 124gr xtreme rn cci spp loaded kind of long but I don't remember off the top of my head hits around 1050 out of my m&p9. Little smoky but pretty soft shooting and accurate but the brass just dribbles out.
6.0gr power pistol with the same everything else is my replacement I'm looking at when I run out of 7625. It's quite a bit more stout hitting right around 1200fps. I've also got tightgroup, bullseye and wsf but I don't really use those often. Wsf is ok for 40 but you get a lot of unburnt junk...

I deprime everything first. Using that single lee press pictured. Then into the tumbler with stainless steel pins to clean the flash holes. They are an endlessly resuably medium and the best I have used. I have tried everything you have heard of and they are by far the best. A little soap a little lemi shine. The brass comes out looking better than factory with flash holes cleaned and polished

It's pretty basic, step dad just finished the bench and it's a huge improvement over the old school desk I was using. Still haven't installed the second press yet. I mainly load for friends and family but I'm transitioning back into making loads for myself again.

But! To stay on topic I didn't do anything related except browse.
>>
To get started I need what
A press
Dies
A tumbler/medium
Bullets brass primers powder
A table to set everything up.
What other stuff do I need, a scale would probably be handy, a lot of guys have calipers. Anything else really?
>>
>>28421818
You don't really need a tumbler unless you're doing large quantities. I used to just clean by hand when I started because I was only loading 25 at a time.

But definitely a press, dies, some way to measure powder, funnels, calipers, some sturdy flat surface, case lube, primer seater and components would be bare minimum.

>>
>>28422153
Skip the cheap electronic scales. Rebranded crap for the most part.
In the under $100 range the balance beam is still the best option.
>>
>>28422153
The mode button. Press it until the unit of measurement is gr.
Make sure you calibrate the scale first.
Turn it on. Wait 30 seconds. Press and hold mode, itll say calibrate, take your finger off and place the weight on yhe scale, it'll say PASS, press mode again and your ready to weigh.
>>
>>28422230
I guess its important to add that you should place the powder tray on the scale when your done calibrating, press tare. Itll zero the scale, so your only weighing the powder, not the powder and the tray.
>>
>>28422227
I also don't like electronic scales... but then again I load for accuracy. throw just under and trickle the rest on the beam.. I'm sure some of those higher end electronic scale dispenser combos work very well... but from a simplicity and reliability standpoint... analog is king.

Drop that powder baffle right to the bottom. While you're at it polish the funnel and graphite or wax the cylinder.
Drops the deviation quite a bit and makes it easier to be consistent.

>>
>>28422318
Scoops are good for general use. I have a set for plinking and range loading. The accuracy you get is entirely dependent on technique and takes a bit of practice.
>>
>>28422340
Nothing measures the physical like a physical measurement. Cant be thrown off by temperature either.
>>
>>28422339
Measures to .2 grain and even then not too reliable.
Even the cheap Lee and Lyman beam scales are better than it. Don't waste money on cheap digital scales. Even the expensive ones are a case of diminishing returns.
>>
>>28422356
Good electronic scales can measure down to your breath affecting the reading. If you really think an electronic scale is inaccurate you're a luddite
>>
>>28422382
Holy fuck, I've never even seen that word before. Good for you.

Im just saying, if you want to measure something, using a counter balance is the way to go. Im not against technology, id like to use ancient architecture as an example.
>>
>>28422340
Says the religious faggot. Go worship your god, you imbecile.

I trust my eyes and an incredibly simple physical mechanism (with few moving parts to break or wear out) over electronics and sensors that are more prone to lying/errors and/or failing.

Being able to repeat the same weight over and over again is mostly what I care about. I don't need to know the exact weight of something. I need to know that charge after charge is as close to identical as the previous. With an analog scale you get that without question. It's a stupid simple and perfectly accurate technology that's been used for thousands of years.

2/10 troll. Got a longer response than you deserved.

Autism, really. And because my cases are a mix of once fired all the way up to 4 or 5 times fired, I just pick them out of an old ice-cream tum, they're not separated. So I don't know which need trimming until I try.

Also, .303 brass tends to flow a bit more than some other rounds. Even good brass in a rifle with a good chamber.

Target is the result. From my Ruger Hawkeye Predator at 100. Handloads are always more accurate than factory.

pretty much that. you have a rotary file that either attaches to a drill or a lathe, with an adjustable spacer that feeds into the brass, and you just grind it down until the space bottoms out and then you deburr it

I only use autocomp. Its all ive ever used. Im new. I reload .45auto. Thats it. But ive gone through 1,500 rounds, does that give me any credibility?

Use Titegroup for best groups.
trufax, senpai

Thanks for the tip! Im working on trigger pull, but my groups are about 2-3" using 6gr of autocomp, could use improvement.

Varget is my general go-to. Mainly load 308 and 223. I worked at a gun store about 6 months ago and the only shit making it up at that time was imr/hodgdon.

>>28423072
Brass depends on what you wanna reload and what for. If volume reloading, sell the rock chucker and get a progressive. Buy once fired online.

If precision, figure where you want off on the price train and go from there.

Primers ship with a $28.50 hazmat fee. Id look for someplace that sells them locally, powder too. Even if its 30 miles away. Fuck that hazmat fee.

I do all my case prep in my garage, since it's quite messy. Also I've got a sliver of brass in between my toe once, it was really shit.
>>
>>28422852
No. You buy what op clearly posted and it adjusts for whatever brass length you need.Triming on ANY caliber brass that hasn't been shot AT LEAST twice if fucking useless and wasteful. You will ruin more than you ever save. And if you arnt checking total overall length anyways on finished casings you should kill yourself.

Die in a car fire you faggot fuck
>>
>>28423072
Dies are entirely on what you shoot.
Brass you can find for free at local shooting spots, ranges
Primers should be purchased locally as with powders do to the crazy shipping fees and restriction.
Bullets should be purchased bulk at local gun shows. You can google all these things and find deals but my suggestions are from 30+ years of finding the best prices

But thanks for the insightful contribution to the thread. I'm assuming this is your first post in this thread?

So I priced it out, the 650 with a case feed, and one set of dies is just about 950 before tax.
I'm planning on reloading .308 and possibly 9mn. Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost me per round for reloads, even if you tell me how much it costs you I'd appreciate it. I'm sure I'd break even eventually but fuck that seems like a lot of cash and if I wanted dies for 9mm I'd be like an extra 60 or so

My nigga. My grandfather lives on this big ass hill over in fortuna.
>>
>>28423366

If you just reload to save money you're doing it for the wrong reasons. The biggest upside to rolling your own is getting a consistent ammo.
>>
>>28423366
Find the powder you wana use.
Find out the gr in load data info.
7000 gr in a pound. Divide the weight of the charge in gr by 7k. Thats the powder cost per round.

Find boxer primed cases. Divide the cost of the cases by how many cases, thats your cost per round for cases.

Find the gr projectiles you want, divide the cost by quantity.

Primers are dictated by the cases, divide cost by quantity.

You can do this on your own, without spending a cent.

Run a range. I scored about 260 pieces of federal 308 because I showed up about after 15 minutes after the local rcmp did their recertification. The guy who runs the range has buckets full of brass from people who don't care.
>>
>>28423380

This guy gets it.

Also it is most satisfying working up a new load and seeing how it performs.

I also like the flexibility of different types and weight of projectiles. Tailor made ammo for plinking, hunting or target shooting.
>>
>>28422443

Safe practice bro. It can be a pain in the ass, but I feel safer doing this myself.

Never forget that you are assembling an explosive that will go off near your face. (rifle ammo that is.)

is reloading rifle brass really THAT much harder than pistol brass? lube and primer crimp + full resizing the only added parts?

best place to bulk buy 77 gr, 75gr HPBT?

Tumbler is under the bucket. Cut a small hole in the edge of the bucket to run the cord and it keeps it pretty quiet while I work.
>>
>>28424077

NP mayne. I want to get into reloading, but I don't see a point in reloading 55 grain for 5.56/.223 if I can get it for $.33 a round average. Once you get into the 62+ range with reloading, and avoiding that steel core shit, is where you start seeing good things.

Also because feeding battle rifles is...interesting, and while it will probably be about the same price to reload for them a shit load, the consistency will help.
>>
>>28422043
I hate this thing, slow as fuck and only reads in .2 grain increments half the time. I still use my 5-0-5.

is there a difference in 5.56 brass and .223? seems like its just different primer crimps
>>
>Having that much smokeless powder in close proximity and out in the open

At the very least, build a kind of oversize spice rack out of sheet rock with dividers between each canister.
>>
>>28424113

The 5.56 has thicker walls. Could affect case pressures, but as long as you are sensible with your volumes you will be okay.

The varying case volumes would affect accuracy.

However if you just want to sling heavy bullets with good, not amazing, accuracy out of your AR a lot, you'll be fine.

>soap

I learned the hard way that armorall wash and wax is superior for wet tumbling.

>wet tumbled batches upon batches of brass with lemishine and dawn
>look purdy and shiny when done
>load some and set aside the rest for future reloading
>loaded and stored brass was all dull and tarnished all to hell several months later
>>
>>28424620
I've gone to this too... A hit of the futuro cheap shit Mexican koolaid looking cleanser and a shot of car wash soap cleans really well and keeps shiny longer. I usually dry tumble finished rounds in walnut with a little car wax which helps too.
