I can't believe it came out just 2 decades after the civil war. I knew it was an old design, but not THAT old. Anyways, if you could modify the original design, with manufacturing costs, power, reliability, and accuracy all in mind, what would you do?

Me?
>Wad Cutter points

ever shoot a handgun with wad cutter bullets? or a pellet gun? Make's perfect holes in paper, and makes shooting VERY rewarding when you cut out bullseyes with.

I'm happy with the bullet weight, velocity, and cost of .22LR. CCI's knows how to make them damn near 100% reliable. Remington can't figure them out though.

.25 acp has equal case capacity iirc.
So that would be an improvement.

You can also reload .25 acp with buckshot so it's extremely cheap if you want something cheap for vermin shooting/plinking

Currently happening

Wouldn't be surprised if what happens is:

>2015-2020
Prices stay around 10cpr, availability in stores gets better as production steps up, funded by extra profits

>2020 or so
Prices drop way down as the current declining interest in .22lr starts to drop demand below supply

Everyone then realizes it's a cheap plinking round, prices restabilize around 4 cpr

.22 magnum that can shoot .22 LR and .22 short THIS IS NOT A FUCKING HARD CONCEPT, WHAT THE FUCK WINCHESTER.
>>
>>28365787
>buying 'target' .22 and not being a competitive shooter bound to it
Get a .17 HMR or a .22 magnum, you fucking retard.
>>
>>28364703
There's a need for a modified .22LR or .22WMR in Cali these days. Cali wen't full retard and banned lead ammo for hunting. Instead hunters there are using lead made from tin-alloy. Since tin has so much lower density this throws the bullet weights way the fuck off. They end up having to use larger but lighter (~26gr) bullets. Since the rifling wasn't resigned for such bullets the accuracy is generally inferior to lead.

One could trouble-shoot this by making a new chambering optimized for the tin ammunition. Design a tin bullet that will give satisfactory performance, and design backwards from that.
Priorities might be to maximize the parts compatibility of .22LR or WMR rifles with the new chambering (e.g. Make a rifle easily convertible by barrel, bolt and magazine change or less).
>>
>>28365809
have a .22mag and was thinking about something in .17HMR but i have too many calibers as it is. I have some older sentimental .22lrs So I've stuck with the caliber. But sometimes you want to see what a rifle can really do. a box of 50 edge is $11.60 so it really isn't that bad. tenex is crazy expensive at $19.50 a box.

There are plenty of lead smelting plants in the US that deal with recycled lead, which is what is used in bullets. The last primary lead smelting plant that dealt with raw ore from the ground is what got closed down.

>>28364703
Centerfire.
Ammo shortages wouldn't be a thing.

What .22 magnum like?
How are the .17s, WSM and HMR?
What about .22 Hornet?

And I've heard people talking about .25 ACP what's up with that one?

What's the price on these and how is there availibility? Do they make reliable alternatives to 22 lr?

Also what about 5.7x28mm? I know I won't like the answer but I'm still curious.
>>
Also, as far as the whole reliability thing goes, I'd much rather have a mouse gun with good .22 than a mouse gun in .25.
>>
>>28367649
I can find .17 hmr in any store in my region, usually quite a bit of it.

I've been considering getting a rifle chambered in it just to have another plinker
>>
>>28367726
.22mag, .17hmr and .22lr at least where I live are always available, .17wsm is becoming readily available, I haven't seen HM2 in a while. 22 Hornet is readily available but expensive for what it is and .25acp not sure really.
>>
>>28367726
Not a single one of those options is as cheap as .22lr, even considering panic/hoarder prices
>>
>>28364703
>if you could modify the original design, with manufacturing costs, power, reliability, and accuracy all in mind, what would you do?

1. Make the damn thing centrefire, using brass, steel, or aluminum cases. (Even plastic,if there is a suitable type.)
2. Instead of .22Short/.22LR/.22WMR/.22Magnum, and standardize on ONE case length only, making it THE standard. Keep it as a rimmed cartridge, since it's already so small.
3. Produce so much of this .22 Centrefire ammo, that it would be difficult to have shortages.
4. Roll around in my huge roomful of cash money from the profits.
>>
>>28367795
The shortages in the US have to be artificial, in Aus we have bucketloads of it and the price hasn't changed other than our dollar going to shit against the greenback.
>>
>>28367844
I understand it's caused by "hunters" buying in bulk and hoarding it.

Could also be low production as well.
>>
>>28367844
People are mass purchasing .22lr in the USA

Nobody would import anything from Australia because it's too expensive so unless Aussies start mass purchasing .22lr the price should stay stable.

And I just checked a single Aussie site and converted price to Clapistan dollars to see that the cheapest .22lr rounds in AUS is still more expensive than the cheapest of America.
>>
>>28364703
>if you could modify the original design, with manufacturing costs, power, reliability, and accuracy all in mind, what would you do?

Make it 25acp.
Or just develop smaller primers, probably cone shaped, and kill rimfire off for good.
>>
>>28367944
>Or just develop smaller primers, probably cone shaped, and kill rimfire off for good.
Non-reloadable centrefire primers for .22 Centrefire with aluminum or plastic cases?>>28367795
>>
>>28367898
Yeah this is always the case in Aus, gotta remember our avg wage is significantly higher in most places.
>>28367895
>>28367898
My main point was we get second dibs on supply, when all the production shit went down in the US and the manufacturers streamlined their lines and focused on .223 and .308 getting anything else in Aus was a PITA but .22lr has always been in abundance, I could go to my local and buy 10's of thousands and that's in a tiny country in a tiny gunshop. I just don't see how Fudd's can buy up supply and yet Aus still gets a steady supply coming in.
>>
>>28367795
>>28367967
A .25 ACP with a longer case would be perfect.

And make it reloadable so you can keep using buckshot to reload it.
