How did everyone feel about this movie?
I was prepared to hate it since Lucas sold the rights but once I actually saw it, sure it wasn't fantastic but it surely wasn't bad either.

I'd put it somwhere around a 6 or 7 out of ten. Imo it's easily the worst Star Wars since the Phantom Menace, but I still liked it a lot

I actually just rewatched Ep 2 yesterday and was wondering what the fuck is going on the whole time. Ep 1 leaves off with the jedi council refusing to train Anakin and Yoda warning Obi Wan about it. It takes about 5 minutes into Ep 2 for Anakin to start challenging Obi Wan on little shit, so I'm guessing that's not the first time he was acting like a butthead. So right away I'm asking myself why he's still being trained if Obi was warned and Anakin is a fucking disobedient prick. Then little things kept contradicting each other. Obi Wan made the point very clear that their job was to protect Padme, not chase after the assassin, but he launches himself out of a 1000 story window to find the assassin. Later the Jedi council decides that Anakin should alone accompany Padme to Naboo, even after Obi Wan objects. This is the same jedi council that didn't want Anakin trained at all but now is sending him on important missions despite complaints of his master. And the whole while Anakin is actually really fucking creepy with Padme. He seriously reminded me of Eliot Rodgers. Yet somehow he gets the girl in the end? I will watch Episode 3 maybe tomorrow, hopefully that one isn't as bad as 1 and 2.

I got around to watching Episode 3 today and it is by far the best of the prequels. Haydn Christianson is a lot better than 2, no plot contradictions, and not boring like Episode 2. The worst part about it was some of the lines were just dumb, but overall I was interested in what was happening. And the final duel is still as great as it was 10 years ago.

While I like the armor the helmet is inferior to the original imperial helmets and even clone trooper helmets. Both Clone Troopers and Imperial Stormtroopers were largely safe from toxins and could even operate in the vacuum of space for a limited time assuming they had the seal active or activated it in time. First Order Stormtrooper helmets could only filter out smoke according to an actual Stormtrooper. While I like the look vs the standard Imperial Stormtrooper it's just not as good.

You could even say Rey pulls an Obi Wan Kenobi and becomes more powerful than Kylo could have ever imagined while not even directly defeating him or winning the duel/fight/battle.

ANH - The Death Star is the super weapon. It's power is demonstrated on a politically important and rebel planet. The heroes slink around it to disable the tractor beam and deliver the droids info to the rebels at their jungle base.

TFA - Starkiller Base is a bigger meaner deadlier Death Star is the super weapon. Its power is demonstrated on a politically important and resistance supporting system. The heroes slink around it to disable the shields and deliver the droid to the resistance at their jungle/temperate base.

ANH - The imperials track Luke et al and prepare to destroy the rebel base.

TFA - The first order tracks Rey et al and prepare to destroy the rebel base complete with virtually all the same characters as ANH and similar count down to doom animations.

ANH - The rebels send a rag tag group to destroy the super weapon and save their own asses against impossible odds. Luke completes the trench run and impossible shot destroying the Death Star.

TFA - The resistance send a rag tag group to destroy the super weapon and save their own asses against impossible odds. Poe completes a trench run esque attack and impossible shot destroying the Starkiller Base.

Of course many movies will share similar elements: story, narrative, plot, themes, etc. TFA surpasses similarity. The overall plot and its progression is so similar that I don't see how anyone could not consider TFA essentially ANH just reskinned with a few new characters and a few minor changes to perhaps the order of events.

I think the examples I provided off of the top of my head are good evidence of that. Adding to the examples is contracting off world transportation in a bar full of sleazy types and the constant easter eggs and throwbacks which exceed funny and cute and just slap the viewer in the face saying look we are selling you the same shit a second time but just different enough that not everyone will catch on or complain. Given the time and viewing of both ANH and TFA, side by side, I'm sure I could provide more evidence.

While dramatic, I think "basically shot for shot remake" still stands for 2 reasons. 1 - Is a pedantic argument. There is an element of generality and deniability using the word "basically". It's broad and leaves a lot of wiggle room before you begin to hit the meaning of exactly, the same, close etc. "Basically" gives me deniability and variability on just how much the same I meant. The generality and vagueness also suggests that with the exception of a few necessary changes to not be exactly the same it is close to being the same. 2 - Is the evidence provided that the movies are not just similar in their plot etc but that they are the same at too many points to be considered just similar.

But hey, you are entitled to your opinion and I mine; I think I have supported mine a whole lot better though.

Finn (or is it Fin?) turned out to be my favorite character. Just a regular guy dropped into some wizard shit way above his head.
