I'm here, but I don't really have anything interesting to share. Mine's a 1951 Tula with a black bolt carrier, and I have way too many stripper clips.

>heavy as fuck towards the front due to grenade cup/grenade sights
>loose firing pin, gunked with cosmoline inside. CLEAN THE FUCKING THING or slamfire
>the pin retaining the firing pin was in there to stay apparently. you NEED a vise to get it out

The thing is covered in cosmoline. I put the stock in the oven at a low temp to get it out of the wood, and a couple coats of BLO.

Poor SKS, the perfect WW2 rifle that came after WW2 ended, if only these things were pushed out just 5 years earlier.
>>
>>28272068
I beat the dogshit out of it with it braced against a 2X4 with a hole drilled for the pin to go through, all I did was bend my punch. I put it in a vise with the same jig and it came right out. There were deep scores on the pin too, as if it was slightly too big for the hole it was in.
>>
>>28272139
>braced against a 2X4
That's why.
Too much bounce in wood to use it as a brace.
>all I did was bend my punch
Shit, I beat on my punch for a solid hour, trying to get the upper handguard retaining pin out, didn't hurt it at all.
>>
Just picked up a '51 Tula from the LGS, pretty happy about it. It's a slight refurb; matte black action instead of blued and the stamp between the Tula icon and the date, but other than that all matching serials, mirror polish barrel and flawless crown.
>>
>>28272166
used a punch from my toolbox, not the one in the cleaning kit.
>>
>>28272177
I see.
Yea the punch from the kit is a tough SOB.
I fucking wailed on it trying to get out that upper handguard pin, only to find out the Yugo's flared it like a rivet, so I had to gingerly take a dremel to it until I worked the flared side down ever so slightly.
But what a pain.
>>
>>28272196
I noticed that when I was putting the wood in the oven to sweat out the cosmoline. I opted not to mess with it.
>>
>>28272139
Pin is simply a bitch to get out. some say its easy, but obviously their gun is of more fragile quality. Honestly, there isnt a need to pull the firing pin when cleaning, a rinse, solvent flush, and some oil and its good. Small break downs wear parts down quickly. Pound that pin out 100+ times and you'll be in the market for a new pin retainer, or even a new bolt altogether. if that retainer worked loose over time and cycled it could fuck shit up real bad.
>>
>>28271918
>the pin retaining the firing pin was in there to stay apparently. you NEED a vise to get it out
>loose firing pin, gunked with cosmoline inside. CLEAN THE FUCKING THING or slamfire
Just soak the fucking bolt assembly in gasoline or something and try again.
>>
>>28272212
A lot of faggots cry oil is bad to use in a free floating firing pin, 7 years and no issues oiling mine, no slam fires, no gunk build up, nothing.
>>
>>28272212

Going to start my project of stripping and staining some pre-owned SKS stock after the new year. It...did not go so well when I bought a "blank" to finish.

Just received the one with the plate, the other one I had bought as the blank and stained it to match my handguard.
>>
>>28272556
i have question for you, I have read that SKS has a secret compartment in the stock for the cleaning kit, is the secret compartment under the plate like in your picture?
>>
>>28272625

Yes.

You can also put weed in there.

Or a flash drive.

Or a baby ferret.
>>
>>28272652
did you literally have to unscrew the screws? will it damage the old threads in the wood?
>>
>>28272677
What are you talking about?

You can see what the recess into the stock looks like in the pic.
>>
>>28272682
i can't see good, do u have to unscrew the screws or does the plate just pop off?
>>
>>28272691
To remove the plate? Yes, you need to remove the screws. There's a spring-held trap door being held in place by one of the screws, as well.

It isn't that difficult to stick it back together, but my issue was that my plate wouldn't fit on the stock I worked on (note, the one without the plate has the screw pilot holes too close together and the end of the stock is in the wrong shape). Unless I casted my own plate, which would then likely fail and fall apart, I'm better off getting my gun into a stock that actually housed an SKS at one point.

So I know this probably gets asked a lot, but searching around on the internet turns up mostly old things from 2007-2012 and I'm hoping to get more current information.

I'm looking to buy an sks soon and was wondering what average fair prices are and anything I should look out for when buying. Non of my local LGS stock them but there is a gun show in a couple of weeks where I should be able to get one. Last time I went to this particular show (early 2014), I remember seeing them go anywhere from 300-600. Now I know Russian ones will run me more and that Yugos are what I should be looking for, but what sort of markings and stuff should I be looking for to identify such guns? I recall seeing several "Russian" guns being sold that has what looked like Chinese markings on the side.

Apparently they take AK mags without any modification.

no. This is specifcially the D and M variants. One of those two happned to have a paratrooper length barrel. The paratrooper itself is just a shortened "normal" SKS.

Getting the FSB off of your SKS and AK respectively is labor intensive unless you have a press.

Yes, I have had experience with some 30 round mags. No, it wasn't good. However, I have to admit that my gun was not it the best configuration when I bought it and test fired it. Bubba had gotten hold and done some horrendous shit.

Anyway, the mags that came with this one would stovepipe, fail to feed, and in general be a pain in the ass. Loading was spotty, too. Can't give much info other than "duckbill, metal".

Tapco's 20 round mags are the only mags other than the default factory 10 that have any sort of decent functionality. Even they have some "bugs" that need to be worked out before they're useable, though. More on that inna minnit.

All 30 round mags are garbage and can't be remedied with any sort of modifications.

The norinco 20 round fixed mags (the so-called "star" mag) are trash too. Bear in mind that they're not military magazines, but are rather norinco consumer products.

Now then, making the tapco mags work "perfectly" requires a few things:

firstly, if you're running a default stock, you may need to relieve some of the wood in the magwell. Sometimes, the factory magwell is so tight that it compresses the mag walls together, and causes failure to feed.

Secondly, you may need to file down the feed lips a little. Again, these mags are kinda tight, and that causes FTF. Removing some material from the lips loosens them a bit. Don't get too zealous, though, or else you'll get something like pic related.

thirdly, you may want to file a small feed ramp into your barrel. The tapco mags have a slightly lower feed angle, so they necessitate a feed ramp, especially if you shoot hollow points.

Finally, you'll want to do the so-called "bolt mod". If you don't, removing mags from a closed bolt is impossible and thus clearing jams and changing mags is more difficult. As in, needing three hands on the rifle difficult.
>I figured one could just use stripper clips like normal while its fixed in the stock as well.

Trying to feed the detatchables past 10 rounds is nearly impossible, and feeding them up to 10 is more difficult than on a factory mag.

As I've said: the tapco mags are tighter than the factory mag, so that goes both ways -- loading and unloading.

You need to remove the follower and spring, and file the inside of the feed lips so that they slope up at an angle.

I have 2 mags like the ones you showed, although instead of messing with the original stock I bought a plastic stock along with some bits from ebay that allowed me to use mags.
I haven't had any of the jamming problems mentioned by >>28277816 and I must have put at least 1.5-2k rounds through it. Yes you can get a PU mount and scope to work it but you will need to have a smith drill and tap the side of the receiver. Just stay away from firefield repro scopes because they are junk. I was planning to do that to my type 56 too but there isn't any reputable smiths in my area and I don't trust my hf drill press to be good enough to do it myself.

Not him but the mount is a molot sks mount you can get off kalinka optics, you can pretty much use any slav side mount on it. not to sure about mag adaptor but I'm sure a quick google search can help you.

If you are careful the wood will be fine. The circled piece of steel at the back of the gas tube is what holds the wood in place. After drilling or punching out the pin that hold it in place it slides right off along with the wood.

not super experienced with SKS but for a yugo that seems pretty high, based on what /k/ said before. chinese export or surplus is usually only 350 on gunbroker, local shops, or armslist.

that looks like unused one though? Thats pretty cool and might be better quality. But >>28277190 said it right.
>It's a soviet gun, bro. It was designed to be oiled with mud and operated by a retard in -1000000 degree weather.
so a pristine gun might be more for your personal aesthetic tastes.
>>
>>28281256

From what I can tell, that seems like an average to slightly above average price, at least in my area. Two years ago I saw beat to shit Chinese guns going for an average of 400 and anything in decent condition going for at least 500. I can only image how much prices might have gone up now for local guns.
>>
>>28281256
>>28281300
I'm actually eyeing that as well and would appreciate input from someone with more SKS experience.

Granted it seems like they throw in a sling and other crap into the purchase so a few bucks of value there as well.
>>
>>28282026

J&G are telling beat to hell Type 56s for a hundred less, but they say straight up that the guns are in really rough shape. They want a littler under 300 for ones with damaged stocks and 250 for straight up rusty and broken junk.

http://www.jgsales.com/c-r-guns-c-290.html

That makes Classic's deal look pretty good.
>>
>>28281300
that is true. for the few bits of things they add its not a bad investment, like sling, cleaning kit, clip pouches, which can make up the $50-80+ in difference. I cant speak for yugo quality apart from what the buying guide says though.
I wouldnt say that classicfirearms page is a "deal" but thinking now it seems pretty fair.
I must say those rifles look pretty fresh out of the crate.
check around for local sellers online, from like armslist or something too. some decent quality chinese norincos and imports maxed at 350 last I saw, and they came with scopes or some minor additives like clips.

I have been googling it, but i still don't fully understand, does an SKS fall under 922r? I have seen some people talking about 922r compliance with sks's, but it seems it is only if you modify it. Is this correct?

Bought this from cousin for 250. Yugo type 59. He and spray painted every piece of metal on the gun. Even the trigger assembly. Soaked that shit out, and redid the stock. Hard to tell, but the stock is gorgeous now.

Put a hundred rounds through it at the range using that 30 rounder with no problems. He had tossed the original mag so I picked one up.
>>
I'm thinking about buying one of the spring loaded firing pins for my Chinese Type 56, but I've read that doing so will remove its C&R status and require me to take off the bayonet. Is that actually true?
>>
>>28278286

It's a way for us syrups to circumvent the 5-rnd limit by using 10 rnd XCR pistol mags.
>>
What is the practical purpose of the sks? Is it more accurate than a modern ak? Or is it just a plinking gun that is good for inna woods?
>>
>>28285600
>What is the practical purpose of the sks?
Durable rifle chambered in an intermediate cartridge. Internal magazine means clips or individually inserted cartridges are fine, no need to buy mags. And, provided this is done with a chinese model, it can serve as a platform to be modified to suit your tastes.
It's kind of what those guys do to old 4x4s, it's a platform they can use to fit their needs.

>Is the pin usable again if punched

If punched, yes. Matter o'fact, once you punch it the first time, it gets easier to remove on subsequent removings.

>>28285600
>Is it more accurate than a modern ak?

In a very VERY hypothetical way, yes. In practice, though, the soviet sights and inherent inferiority of the round in general make any gain irrelevant.

>>28285498
>I've read that doing so will remove its C&R status and require me to take off the bayonet. Is that actually true?

Yes, but unless you're planning on selling it or going to the ATF annual 922r blockparty, no one fucking cares unless you're a gun vendor who would have already known the answer to this question.

>>28285661
>So you are saying this is the gun for the tinkerer?

The best way to think of the SKS is that it's functionally a cheap .30-30 lever gun ++. When asking what the SKS is good for, ask yourself what a .30-30 lever gun would be good for, and then imagine a gun that does all that slightly better and for less money.

Yes, it's fun and easy to tinker with, but other than maybe a scout mount, 90% of modifications are either pointless or simply not worth the money.

I'm >>28277190 too, so don't take that as me being some purist fag.
>>
>>28286983
>>28286967
>>28286956

What mount is that? It looks a lot more simple that most SKS rails I've seen. I like the idea of maybe putting a red dot on an SKS but do not like the idea of removing the original sights or having to do any sort of dremel work.
>>
so you'll guise want to hear something funny?

so I bought a preban SKS norinco type 56 export model (spike bayonet) used from my local LGS. there was barely any cosmoline on it so I could tell someone cleaned it up. well I just discovered the secret compartment in the stock and opened the toolkit up and guess what, the inside of the toolkit is a solid block of cosmoline lol. apparently the previous owner or the lgs didn't even know about the secret compartment.

also I have to say that from what I hear, the only good detachable mags for the SKS with the wooden stock are the preban imported cheapo metal ones, all polymer ones will require you to file down the magwell for them to fit. I can attest to this because I bought a cheap ass promag for it and I literally have to force it in the magwell because its a hair to big.

so try and find the metal original style SKS duckbill mags.

also I paid 400 for the basic norinco 56 with sling (yes I know that's kind of a lot, especially considering SKS is only 150$ in Canada), do not pay 400+ for a yugo SKS it is too high of a price, also the yugo does not have a chrome lined barrel so surplus corrosive ammo will eat it up quickly.
>>
>>28287725
Yeah, we're just swimming in corrosive 7.62x39 ammo. Dumb shit.

So a kind guy on Facebook met and gave me a free Chink SKS stock, since mine would move back and forth in the stock at bit. Now it's tight, but ferociously so. If I tighten the locking screw on the side more than a little bit, it squeezes so tight that it begins to force the whole thing out the top! Otherwise it's fine. Will this be a problem, you guys think?
>>
>>28289700
how can it force it out the top if it has magazine and trigger group attached?
>>
>>28289707
Well, it squeezes hard enough that the area around the locking screw where the barrel and receiver meet started to slide up. I'm just used to a loose stock, so I didn't know if it was a bad thing to behave that way.

Also, the finish is shit. I heard the Chinese ones use a wood that looks good all stripped down?

Hey guys, I nabbed this sks less than a month ago, and I noticed the front sight seems way high and right. When I shot it for the first time at markham park, I noticed that my rounds were hitting lower than I was aiming when the target was 25 yards away, and I'd have a pretty shitty spread when shooting at targets that were 50 and 100 yards away. What bugs me is that I took aim at a rock that was halfway up the hill that catches all the rounds and was hitting it dead-on almost every time. Can someone explain why this is happening?

>>
>>28296901
well, that front sight is basically just a screw with a weird top that is your front sight
the tool just has a slot that fits over it so you can turn it easily to adjust where you're shots are hitting. You could probably find another way to turn it with a needle nose pliers or whatever.
I'd think the front sight would snap before your tool ever would, the ones I've seen are made of metal and tough as nails.
>>
>>28297496

Got a free Chink SKS stock from a guy, seems thicker and less tapered than my Russian stock. Is this normal? I like how tight it holds my '50 Tula, but it feels fat. Is it worth the effort to sand it down and refinish it, or should I find another? I heard the Chinese wood looks real nice exposed.

Ok, I appreciate you answering my stupid questions, Anon. A few more, quickly. Is there something special about the chink Chu wood? Lots of people seem to think that "the Russians had the best metal, the Chinese had the best wood", and I don't get it.
Is the chink stock supposed to be fatter than a Russian? It's a bit thicker and has little taper, so it feels much more crude.
Have you ever tried the Monte Carlo stock?

>>
>>28301126
I prefer Russian wood to Chinese. Chu is lightand can be pretty, but easily marred. Only used because China doesn't have a lot of choices for their wood, domestically.

Monte Carlo stocks are nice to use, but I hate the look.- same story as the Tapco. I really like the look of the full wood military stock, so that's what I kept.

is it only going to be under 30 if you buy it in bulk that large? I saw corrosive stuff for 27, though they came with stripper clips, but last gun store was trying to extort 40.

Get a section of 4" pipe with a cap on one end, put barrel and receiver in it, fill with mineral spirits, profit. Use a small plastic tub and Coleman camp fuel with a toothbrush for trigger assembly and bolt. Be sure to reapply oil with a rag to every metal surface as it will be completely stripped of everything

Two years ago, I was living in California, going to college. I had decided to move to the Gunshine State to escape the liberal hellscape.

Before I left, and a few days before the sunset of California's private sales of C&R firearms, I found a Russian SKS in decent shape on Calguns for $400. I called up a friend I had made at college, much younger than I was, and who I had shaped into a proud, patriotic American man from a blind liberal. I told him to bring $400 and an ID to the location of sale. He had never owned a firearm, and was reticent to put himself on CA DOJ's list of gun owners. The light in his eyes when he saw that rifle, damn man--it felt like I had given him the ability to actually SEE the rifle for what it is.

Although I could not buy it for him, I left him with a few hundred rounds of x39 and a dozen stripper clips. I never saw him again. I hope you still have it, bud. Merry Christmas.
