Reposting from old thread

Hello gearcunts, I have been thinking about of differences between body armor and plate carriers in american type of insurgency/innawoods situation. I personally have experience in using body armor and combat vest during my time in FDF and they really did not hamper my movement that during excersises. That being said I would ditch all armouring and carry bare necessities around on person and rest of the shit in rucksack in insurgency situation.
How do you see where the thin line of no protection to plate carriers go in your own planning and preparing?

At the moment, I don't have any protection (no plates), but am planning on getting one Level IV front plate for my vest. I want enough armor to be mobile, but not weigh me down or hamper my movement.

I think it comes down to what you're actually going to be doing if SHTF. Everyone likes to think they'll be cowadooty-ing things, but most likely you'll be going innawoods and trying to hold out.

I like to go light, (Hence no backpack with this rig), so it wouldn't make sense to have a ton of armor, as I want to have as little contact as possible.

tl;dr amount of armor is determined by how much combat you want to see/how mobile you want to be.

>>
>>28231446
I just want to know how you and other see their kit going with their innawoods planning.
A lot of people has gucci as fuck plate carriers and equipment for all situations which is bloody smart, but where is the line of too much is too much? I understand that gathering gear and making the most optimized setup for you is fun, but have you ever thought, what if the shit actually hits the fan, what next? Are you going to operate innawoods with your super fast helmets and PCs or trekking superlight evading everything out of the happening zone?

And yes, I am a Finn. My SHTF situation is probably polite green men on this side of border, which means I am huddling my rifle in some foxhole hoping that next Grad barrage doesn't blow everything away.

The line is when you can't operate effectively. I.e. When it slows you down, when you can't reach your magazines because your third IFAK is getting in the way, when it gets too expensive, and especially when you're buying things that you will likely never use. But ultimately, where the point of "too much" falls depends on your strategy and actions.

I like to have enough supplies for about a day innawoods on/in my plate carrier, and enough supplies for two or three days in my car. I'm assuming i'll be alone or be physically close to a few people, so I don't have a radio. I don't have a helmet because I don't want to spend the money, and want to avoid firefights. I don't have a gas mask because I don't expect gas to be used, and if it was, i wouldn't be able to get the mask out in time anyway.

What model rifle do you have?

Sadly still poor noguns student, but my plan is to acquire AK variant of some model to keep my skill not rusty and if I get interested on practical then AR 10.

You have good points. Good rule of thumb is to have at least 2 days worth of food with you when moving away from your camp or stash in your backpack. This for when things go sideways you have something to survive from, unless you are super survivor 3000 and hunt squirrels for food barehanded.

Question from a civvie... are military guys actually allowed to put their own gear on their rifles? I mean regular infantry types, not SOF.
>>
>>28232351
What are the gun laws like in Finland then?

I'm a bit of both. I know how to hunt small animals (like squirrels) well, but don't want to rely on it. which is where you're right.

>>28232445
Civvie to civvie, Last I checked, yes. There may be some constraints though (no tacical bottle openers etc).

>>
>>28232488
In theory you can get everything that is allowed by international laws, but in practice semiautomatic weapons are the limit. Collectors get full autos, but usually permits are for no shooting or just shooting in gun shows renactment. Good gun laws compared to rest of the EU.

From a buyer's perspective, what's a decent price to pay for a UCP colored KDH issue plate carrier? My local surplus has a pile of them and UCP IOTVs and they aren't selling at all. The owner is pretty realistic, and I think I can talk him down from the selling price of $100. I'm thinking $50 or $75-ish?

I'm planning on removing the sideplate pouches and dying the whole thing dark green if I get it.
>>
Anyone have any recommendations for a FAIK setup on a D3CR on a Ferro Slickster?
>>
>>28232445
It depends HEAVILY on the individual unit. The company commander is the final say-so in a unit.

On average among units on deployment though you tend to be allowed your own sling, handguard covers, foregrip, and flashlight in almost any unit.

Most units will allow you to swap out your buttstock (so long as it isn't something terribly goofy) and your pistol grip.

Some units will allow you to swap your muzzle device, though it's kind of a hassle.

It is extremely rare (though not impossible) to get the go-ahead to swap out optics, though this really only happens if it fits into the TO&E. For example, some guys get selected as designated marksmen, but the unit doesn't actually have any real DMRs, so they give them an AR with a 20 inch barrel and an ACOG, that person, if they have proven semi-competant, can probably swing the idea of sticking a personal magnified optic on the rifle. Much more common than using personal optics is swapping out what is on your rifle for a different optic in the arm's room; ie- swapping an Aimpoint for an ACOG or vise versa.

I have deployed with some dudes with gearqueered out rifles. One guy was relatives or something with people who owned a gunshop and his M4 had a ACS stock, plastic double mag clamp with two mags, Surefire griplight, Surefire muzzle device and aftermarket railcovers in addition to his issued ACOG and PEQ. His rifle was heavy as fuck. He also did 99% of his deployment out of a truck.

>>
>>28239379
There is a weird balance on people's opinion of gear. It's hipster if it's too obscure and its dudebro if it's too popular. Same thing happened with Magpul products. Do what you're doing and focus on if it works.

Oakleys are nice, and USstandardissue.com offers them to vets at a steep discount. If you can talk your friend into ordering them for you, they're quality. They even make prescription sunglasses, which is nicer than wearing inserts.
>>
>>28232445
Generally only the non operational parts, for example you can put your own foregrip on. Anything in the action or the optics is usually a no go.

I foresee myself pulling guard duty in my neighborhood surrounded my family, neighbors, and friends. That being said I will be in a static position, so I can wear as much body armor as I can and I'll be ok. Now I was was building an INCH set up I would have no armor because it would be too heavy. I build gear sets for different situations. I have a light set just for moving and then the guard set which is heavy shit and I won't be moving much.

1MB, 3264x2448px
>>28242943
Several reasons.
I have had numerous broken ribs in the past. I don't fancy trying to reach back like that after being shot in the chest.
It might not be me trying to get to it. I would rather not get rolled around while someone is looking for the thing.
Lastly, it just makes me feel better when I can visually check my gear. My back pouch is usually wet weather gear or extra socks or something, as I do not carry an assault pack.
>>
>>28242987
Does your plate carrier have side webbing?
Wack it on one of your sides.
>>
>>28243026
This. Non master side as far back as you're comfortable reaching. What's in your IFAK? I have two, in my sleeve pocket and on my armour on the back. It's a tear away for when I chuck on my pack.
>>
>>28243026
It does. I prefer to keep my sides relatively clean, but that is an idea with merit.
>>28243043
My IFAK is a standard USGI set up. I am not a fan of tear away pouches because I have seen guys loose them. IEDs and whatnot have a funny way of testing how secure gear is. That said, It is highly unlikely that I will be encountering any IEDs at the range or in the local woods.
>>
>>28243064
It's the old 'shadow your body' train of thought. You have a unique issue so it makes it harder for you.

Never heard of any of the lads losing a tear away, got an additional buckle to assist.

Milsurp ILBV, room for 6 mags, a three rounder on the but back as a quick dump pouch. 3 quarts of water. Rain jacket in butt pack. Flecktarn coat. Wrangler cargo pants, some no name socks, some used boots. A couple lengths of gauze
>>
>>28242905
I keep mine on the right of my three magazine pouches. My general rule for gear is to assort it from most urgent to least urgent, going from the middle to the sides, favoring the right. I'm going to have a second IFAK, as my USGI won't hold two izzy bandages and a CAT, so the bandages and gauze will be to the right of my magazines, with the other stuff on the left side.

Remember, if you get shot/blowded up/stabbed/whatever and you can treat it yourself, you want to shave as many seconds as possible when getting your stuff. Trying to get an IFAK off your back with a cut femoral could cost you your life. (Last I heard, you have about a minute becore you lose consciousness from a nicked femoral.)

For the past 2 weeks, I lift 3 times a week (im doing a 5x5, so free weights only) and still run a mile every day I lift, then on the off days I run 3 miles or run 1 mile and then do 60:120s and then do some Accessory stuff like dumbells or machines instead of free weights So six times a week I spend at least a hour and a half in the gym. I haven't slacked off yet, but I'm only two weeks in.

>>
>>28249579
Just running might not help you a great deal, mix in interval training and sprint sessions. Intervals are good because you break down the split and focus on hitting a target time each interval. Free weights are pretty good but focus lighter and for more reps and sets. Milfit is all about endurance and conditioning at the same time not trying to fuck your body too bad.
>>
>>28249611
ACOGs have a 1.5" eye relief, they tend to blast you in the face especially when prone cus your head is angled towards the tip of the eye piece. It's not the round but the scope that causes that.
>>
>>28249677
5x5 free weights duh. Course free weights are good.

Like I said m8, ACOGs have a very small eye-relief. I've seen people get blasted by them all the time. I was in the Marines, and did range coach. If you don't have a good cheek weld, especially in the prone, and especially during rapid fires, you'll get a pretty good hit.

it's really versatile. It's one of the only, if not the only IFAK that can actually be mounted upside down without any detriment to deployment or security.
>>
>>28251529
I like its great capacity with minimal bulk. Other ifaks that large are fucking chunk monkeys. to many companies try to make ifaks that use as little as molle realestate as possible, that forces it to grow outwards in order to offer a usable capacity. Plus its light and readily deployable. BFG shit might not be for everyone, their dumper isnt so great, but that Ifak is top notch
>>
>>28251554
I own at least fifteen blue force gear products, from their Ten Speeds, to their Admin pouches, to slings and other shit. I have pretty much no complaints with any of them.

I have the dump pouch, and I like it. It's great for pistol and pistol/rifle combination belts. I wouldn't fill it with more than like three rifle mags, but I almost never have more than two magazines in a dump pouch at one time. It's more or less just a workspace for further organization.

They aren't for everyone, like you said. I don't know. If you are on the bleeding edge of tactical theory and shit, then BFG probably appeals to you more than it does to people who use milsurp trash
>>
>>28251594
I buy tons of shit, mostly from tactical tailor. I bought that BFG rig because I wanted it, I hated my D3CR, and it is used as a grab and go thingy for my house. On my PC and belt I use Kywis for magazines.Best dump pouch is the HSGI magnet, it deploys easiest and has the wodest opening. Ifak wise I use the BFG exept on my belt since its to big, there I have a 90° hsgi bleeder. Admin pouch I use a maxpedition only because I avoid velcro like the plague

I just got my HSGI leg rig V1 (formerly known as the Costa drop leg). I got it in Wolf Grey, which in person is a very dark bluish grey. Probably just gonna stick with coyote stuff from this point on.

It's a nice set up. The whole 'low profile' thing is stupid because it's certainly not. But it's not overly bulky or obtrusive. When i adjusted the height, it feels very natural doing reloads from there. More so than belt pouches.

This is the more often used meaning of "low profile" in combat gear. Calling any combat gear "low profile" to refer to "blending into civilian clothing" is mostly retarded thinking that's been flamed by wannabee James bonds.

I've dyed UCP with Rite dye. Don't expect factory new results, and don't expect it to be a darker tint with camo contrast. The whole thing kind of goes darker with some slight color variations. Best idea is to get some dark green dye and do the dying process, but let the fabric soak 3x as long as normal to do as much as possible to obliterate the pattern.

I wouldn't recommend spraypaint on fabric. I did this for some UCP stuff on deployment, and the paint gets flaky and makes the fabric stiff. At most, dye the gear green, and then do some light lines with spraypaint of brown or tan to break it up.

Like I've said before, I'm guard, and currently in, so I feel even less comfortable about wearing my uniform or any part of the current uniform casually. So bdus are actually quite nice woods wear, but I'd rather have solid colors or patterns not in current use.

Once UCP is phased out and hopefully forgotten, maybe ill rock my field jacket. I love that jacket

>>28259450
And seriously, it doesn't bother me when civilians wear the uniform without name tapes, but I feel like in my situation it would be inappropriate.
>>
>>28259511
No more than 3+1, and that's pushing it.

>>28259507
Those are morale patches and while it might confuse civilians, it should be no big deal. A few people I've met wear a small morale patch underneath their collar or on their kit. Excess of two morale patches is weird though

>>

I've been also eyeballing the perroz design LPSPC.

>>28259002
bulky, heavy, there are just better options on the market.

the neck protection is my biggest gripe about it being perma attached to the rig.
putting on chestrigs like the sposn eger or chicoms is an absolute chore.
it doesn't help that you feel like a turtle when you bend over or sit down.
and pack work isn't so nice either.

hm, fair enough. I ordered a 6b45 that is hopefully less bulky, although i really want a 6b23 for some reason, and a FORT vest.

i only ask about the helmet cause it looked like a 6b26 and i was curious because i have no idea what ruskie shit goes onto my 6b47 helmet.

Also, while it may look really nice in the picture, it was a little chilly that day. So that was still pretty comfy.

Also, Im used to sweating my balls off. I live in the desert. Its a thing.

Ive thought about getting airsoft crye knockoffs actually, but for shirts, Im not sure what to do. I want good multicam clothes cause they are good for hunting in my area. So for gearqueer its either that or just go full ranchero narco.

SOE Micro or Esstac Trim Bush?
SOE has a pouch for whatever already on it but is rather static in the customization department and slightly cheaper.
Bush has the mags across the front instead of stacked and has possibility to change out accessories but I have to but the pouches.

If it wasnt spec'd out for practicing reloads and transitions the 3 rifle mags would be cut down to a single fastmag and MAYBE have a single pistol mag pouch.

Rest of the rifle mags, multitool, extra TQ would go on the plate carrier.
>>
>>28263031
something about that dump pouch just makes me mad.

>>28263043

It's starchy as fuck.

It keeps itself open with stiffness and uses internal lining with a drawstring to provide retention.

>>
>>28263627
it depends on what you are doing and if you have time.

one way to do it is
>shoot
>first reload from easiest most forward pouch
>put empty in dump pouch or leave on the ground
>tactical reload
>move mags with the most ammo in them towards the front and the ones that are half empty towards the back.
>never put mags with ammo in the dump pouch

So I did some more research and TAG seems like pretty decent tier stuff at the least. Most people seem to really like it. So I picked up the Gladiator off of Amazon for like $180. It's a similar design to the cheapo Condor rig I have so I assume that I currently have the knock off and that this is the real deal. Will post full setup later this week when it shows up and I move all my shit over to the new rig.
