I like basic, proven steels like 1095 (out with my Izula as I type this), 420HC and AUS8. They've stood the test of time, they've been around long before I have and they'll be around long after I'm gone.

I also appreciate that they're not "flavor of the week" steels, I hate fads and trends.

Issue I find is that the camera tends to take pictures that are too "big" for the chan. File size is what I mean. I have to shrink mine down so they can be posted. If the pic you posted was from a phone I wouldn't be upset at using a phone.

1095, because it's at an excellent intersection of cost and quality and it works for pretty much anything under ~25". Some of my favorite stuff is 1095, but some is 1075 and one or 2 are 5160.

Also, I'm thinking about a next-gen Kabar in D2.

All that being said, steel is the last thing to worry about when choosing a knife. The average user won't usually notice an appreciable difference in performance between any good steels, so manufacturers and designs are what you want to look at. If you can afford the fancy VG-10 version of something that usually comes in 440C then go for it, but short blades generally suffer from greatly diminishing returns after $100.

If you owned a real one you would be a wealthy man. Unfortunately the pommel become brittle with age though so it should live in a glass box. All the repros of the V42 are a bit shit when you can get a real Sykes Fairbairn or reasonable money.

The blade on the V42 is just a touch to fragile for my taste. I guess that is why it only had the one production run.

Do you not understand that hard materials wear slowly? Most knives are 55 RHc or so because that's a good balance of hardness, toughness and being able to sharpen the damn thing without a diamond stone and two hours of time. The data sheet for that steel lists it as ~60 RHc which is a significant increase.

I prefer simple 1095 and similar type steels for hard use knives. Most of my folding blades use high end stainless steel however.

Very much like: VG10, M390, M4

Damn decent: D2, CTS-XHP

Meh: S30v, 154cm, ats-55, 440-anything

Really all modern stainless is a wonder. With the exception of really under-hardened 440A or similar it all performs well. I have 3 blades in M390 (BM710, Spyderco Military, BM556) and find it to be my favorite. Sharpens easily enough, takes a wicked edge, HOLDS a wicked edge, and is stainless as hell.

Favorite grinds would be full flat and convex.

I've been on a condor kick as of late after giving their nessmuk a go for my edc and finding it down right comfy af. The moonshiner just came in the mail yesterday so I cant really say much more then its got a nice balance of heft & agility in hand. Its fairly sharp as is and its a real stunner in its polished and wood handle finish alongside the quality leather sheath. Crazy to think such a blade only cost me $40 on the budk (they had a promo and I got this and 2 swords for a heck of deal).

Yeah, I had been getting bored of my bk9 for my go to mauler, so when I saw this it just said buy me. I've read good reviews on it for chopping and what not, but im not sure with its scandi flat grind if its the right choice to replace my bk9 with.

What's the best way to go about getting a knife made? I've been doodling blades for years and I've spent almost a year designing and refining one design that I think could be successful. Is it worth propositioning a semi custom maker like TOPS or Busse? Sadly I dont have the time or tools to make my own

Probably not, unless your designs are really good or are unique. Your two options are to go custom or to make your own.

Since you can't make your own, the least you could try is to make a cardboard or cutting board mockup of your knife. At the very least, it'll let you get a feel for what the design feels like in hand while also requiring minimal amounts of tools and skill.

I believe that my design is unique and also useful. I had a certain philosophy in mind when designing to maximize ergos and usability but it's also pretty original in that there aren't many or even any knives similar to this.
I have made mockups out of cardboard and shitty wood to make sure it feels good irl

Stabbing with a kukri is not something you'd normally do. Yes - it can be done, in a pretty interesting way, but not on a daily basis.

And "muh modern" can't hold a candle to a properly made one.

Lansky met and gatco make these little guided sharpeners that clamp onto the back of the blade and they are pretty foolproof, you will need to mark where the clamp lands on the blade and since its so long you will have to sharpen it first the lower half then the upper

If you want to get into free hand sharpening then a Norton combo India stone is the best place to start, a lot of well known knife people use it as their only stone but it's maybe a touch course for some people but it's cheap, will last a couple generations if not used for commercial sharpening and will get an aggressive edge that is suitable for %99 of your cutting needs

A strop is the next necessity, it can be used as the final step in honing or to refurbish the edge once it dulls a little, after the India stone you can get something else to held refine the edge, a 1000 or 1200 grit water stone is a pretty cost effective choice, ceramic stones can be another good option that aren't messy like the jap stones and you won't need to flatten them constantly

Any recommendations for a general purpose /out/ knife? I'd use it for when I go camping and hunting, to skin some rabbits, gut some fish and other random shit. I used to have an Opinel but my brother lost it. That lasted me a really long time but I want something different now. I was thinking of a puuko knife? I'm not knowledgeable at all so just looking for some advice.

Those are terrible steels by comparison. This is like you telling us that you prefer riding a horse to driving a car or using modern public transport because people have been riding horses for hundreds of years. The old "fad" steels like BG42 and S30V are vastly superior in nearly every way to the steels you've named, assuming someone doesn't fuck up the heat treat. The "fad" steels are fads because the raw stock prices eventually drop to where custom makers can start using it. As they get more popular the raw stock prices drop and regular manufacturers start using it. Then something new comes out and the process starts over again.

It's like you don't even understand that materials sciences are one of the most researched fields across the globe. I bet you're afraid of immunizations too.

To be fair, certain steels thought to be crappy or cheap can have a niche. For example, 420J2 is often used in bottom of the barrel garbage knives and has bad edge retention. However, it's useful in cheaper diving knives due to its pretty good rust resistance.

Just picked up a Steel Will Argonaut 820.
It's 6.5" of AUS8 steel today. It looks great in person, and really durable from what the Gideons Tactical guy on YouTube tested.

I support your decision.I think the ESEE 5 is the weakest of the ESEE line up. Personally I think the weight to length ratio is way too high. I know that's the appeal of it, but I just think that it's too high to be practical in most civilian situations.I would just consider taking around a separate glass breaker (maybe on a folder) and an esee 4 or 6. But it depends on your situation and what you're using it for. or just smash up the ceramic part of a spark plug, they smash windows better than anything

Not really. You either get a highly complex chart since you're comparing a ton of variables, a chart that's only good for one application, or a chart that's highly biased by the creator. You're essentially comparing the constituent components of the steel to evaluate the characteristics they will give the blade. They usually mean one thing but in some cases they don't. The famous example being chromium in D2.

Per these guys http://www.suppliersonline.com/propertypages/D2.asp D2 has 11% - 13% chromium. D2 is very much not a stainless steel which is why you almost always see it coated in something to prevent corrosion. The chromium that would provide the corrosion protection is instead bonded with the very large carbide structure in D2.

The easiest thing to do is to decide what a blades job will be and then evaluate steels that fit the role. Are you going to push cut things? M2, M4, S110v, ZDP-189 all work well. Are you going to saw cut things? VG10, 154CM, ATS134 do it well. Are you going to swing it like an axe or machete? L7, properly heat treated M4, 1095, even low hardness D2 will do a good job.

It's just not easy to compare the breadth of blade steels accurately in a way for the average person to comprehend.

If what you said was true, they would've changed it. Esee doesn't just make a knife and throw it out there. They actually use their knives. One reason why their survival school was made, for extended use of all prototype knifes. They will really use the shit out of them before making a decision. The Esee 5 is pretty much the better version of the Bk2. Better scales, sheath, dat warranty, etc.

As far as it being an upgrade over the bk2 I'd have to say that's false, the handle shape is much better on the Becker, the material might be better but when it comes to chopping the Becker handle locks you into place where the thin end of the 5 let's it continually slip, Gideons tactical has a pretty good vid comparing them

And Kabar may not have as good of a warranty they do still have a good lifetime warranty but you'll never need to use a warranty for either, they are 1/4" chunks of steel not much ever goes wrong with them

Im not saying the esee is a bad knife. I made it clear that it was my opinion that its the weakest. I think so because for wildcamping and survival camping etc i have always preferred the standard puukko axe combo. If i were only able to take 1 knife then the esee 5 would be a good option for me. I have a couple TOPS as well, really like them. I like how they're not afraid to try new things with their designs. Probably my favorite fixed blade maker.

I don't know if TOPS and LTWK is a suitable comparison. TOPS is basically small scale production focusing on tactical and survival designs, whereas LTWK is a guy making small batch customs inspired by simple traditional designs. A batter comparison is TOPS and ESEE, and in my opinion TOPS makes same quality knives that are slightly cheaper. More interesting designs too

On the functional side, a balisong has all the things a good edc knife should have - one handed opening and closing, a strong locking mechanism, some even have pocket clips.

And back in the 1980s, balisongs and switchblades came with the badass rebel attitude. One of the partisans in Red Dawn (the 1984 original) uses one.

But then, TF2 came around, and everyone and their dog wanted a bali. That, and modern folders with good locks and smooth operation just make balis irrelevant, unless you like twirling. I've carried a bali as my edc for over a year, before moving on to a "normal" folder, and now I just edc a fixed blade.

AFAIK, tops and esee both use Rowen manufacturing (though I may be wrong on that) in Idaho. I have both a tops MSK and esee Izula 2 - prefer the Izula (though i carry an LTWK next gen - same general purpose as the izula, but better in every way. And more expensive).

Fox, Emerson, and Ontario for more modern stuff. Pinoy Steel for classical styles. Expect to pay at least $100 for a good karambit, although PS occasionally sells blemished items for cheap.

If you're a cheap bastard you could go with a UC Honshu, but IMO it's dumb to go for the cheap chinkshit interpretation of an exotic knife you like.

Looking for a decent EDC folder, can spend around 100 bucks on it if justified. Assisted openers tend to be more expensive, but I don't really have any idea on how they'd be efficient over manual openers.

Just bought one of these, received it today.

However, I noticed the button on it is a bit "stiff" and makes and almost grinding noise when I press it. Sometimes if I don't press it at the right angle, it won't activate till I either press it harder or close it again to realign the mechanism or something.

Should I RMA this or just assume this is the build quality of a $40 auto? To note, I bought a second Boker auto as well and it has the same general issue too, though not as bad, leading me to believe it's just the build quality of a knife this cheap.
