It's time for me to get another gun. I want a 357 magnum carbine and then later a revolver in the same caliber. I really like the idea of the Ruger 77/357. Got any opinions? It seems light and better suited as a survival/hunting gun than a lever .357.

I moved and didn't bring all my guns so in my possession I have:
Ruger Mk3 .22lr
Henry Lever Carbine .22lr
Remingington 760 30-06

I don't carry. I just want a rifle I can shoot all the time that uses the same ammo as a revolver I plan to get.

If I get this bolt rifle, what revolver would you pair it with?

Slightly related question.

Can a .357 carbine fire .38sp like some re olvers can? Or would they be too short and cause feeding and chambering issues?
>>
>>28105166
Yeah, it works fine, same with .44 mag/spl, but sometimes it can be a bit sticky when chambering a .357 after shooting a bunch of .38.
>>
>>28105166
An auto loader, maybe. Lever actions absolutely.

You may have inspired a future purchase anon.

I was just in this boat, OP. I bought a Rossi 92. Why do you think the ruger would be better suited innawoods?
>>
This thread reminded me I got to track down a marlin Camp9

I think the bolt action is just plain better and more reliable in a SHTF scenario. Also at 5.5lbs this thing is light. Most full size levers have some heft.
>>
>>28105166
Yeah you can shoot most anything from a lever/blot carbine. If you want an autoloader pistol cal carbines suck. .223 is a better round.

Another option is pump action like the Taurus Thunderbolt. Has a 14 round capacity for .357/.38sp.
>>
>>28105450
Das cool. Can it load through the breech?
>>
>>28105450
Man if that wasn't a Taurus I'd be all over that.
>>

Here's one of the .45 Colt versions in action. The operational method is likely the same as the .357 version.

As far as revolvers are concerned in the pair it has been said the Ruger GP100 is built like a tank, and is available with a 3.0 / 4.2 / 6.0 inch barrel.

Maybe you should, you know, clean your stuff sometimes.

Bolt over lever for survival? Based on what? If you are talking pistol caliber carbine then no, you've already given up 300 yard shots there. Lever is faster shooting and reloading can be done without magazine removal and without being empty.

My choice was for the following in .357 Magnum
>Marlin 1894c
>Smith and Wesson 686 4 inch

This anon is wise.

I would add, grab the slightly pricier match champion edition. The improved trigger, match grade barrel and sights are well worth it.
>>
>>28105293
Where did you get the idea that a bolt action with a 5 round rotary magazine is more reliable than a well proven lever action with a higher capacity tube?

You're not asking about a full size lever action, anon, you're asking about a carbine. The rossi 92 357 is 4.8 pounds. Its the very definition of a carbine.

Speaking of the Rossi options is there any significant advantages or disadvantages over selecting one of the large loop lever versions over the standard lever?

one handed flips

Winter gloves.

It makes you feel like John Wayne.

big gloves and/or big hands.

You aren't required to go with rossi on this, there is also henry and marlin making 357 lever guns.
