Then again, probably very few people have converted an SMLE, and of those even fewer would be likely to notice the issue, so it may be that I've discovered something entirely new to the firearms world.

The only hard part was lathing down the back of the barrel, reaming out the chamber, and retiming the threads. I had a gunsmith friend with a lathe handle that one. The rest was fairly easy; the boltface is plenty large enough, the magazine only needed slight modification to the feed lips... that's about it really.

And now I can enjoy my rifle more, with the less expensive and more readily available 7.62x54r ammo.

Perhaps some synergistic phenomena arising of the ballistic properties ramming air / driving an implosion?

SMLE 54r is a favorite thing to search on GB.

How many batches of different 7.62x54r did you test? I've noticed less harmonic disturbance with the heavy rounds, they seem to either produce a more stable wave ( i think that is the correct term) than the lighter, which seem to have more of an erratic wave length due to both quality and projectile density consistency.

Granted my testing was only with accuracy at 25 yards. Same rifle shimmed and not shimmed, all batches of ammo were split 50/50 after being measured , repacked , and sealed, with as few alterations as I could manage.

Is the neck just partially unsupported?

The barrel harmonics of the .30 caliber rounds cause the issue. A stout recoil as one observes with the 7.62x54R and .303 British send vibrations down the barrel causing a ripple, this reduces the accuracy. It is for this reason small caliber weapons are more accurate, and olympic shooters primarily use .22 caliber weapons.

I remember you talking about this a few years, shit has it been years? back. do you have any video of it feeding the 7.62x54r, and did the rims on the cartridges having any impact on the feeding? for example the mosin has a little spring to try and prevent rimlock, I'm not aware of any similar system on the enfield, but assume it has the same type of system.

The barrel harmonics are most likely due to the thinner chamber/barrel and shorter barrel than a mosin. I don't know the exact resonance frequency of the barrel but whatever you did the x54r hits it. Remember that tacoma narrows bridge video? Same principle. The cork acts as a damper to absorb the energy. Don't be surprised if you have to redo the corking every so often as it gets beat up and flattened out.

What is the weight, material, and length of the old and new barrels? Also, what is the velocity of the bullet at the muzzle as it exits the barrel?

I looked into x54 conversions for a while and they're out there, onot a few videos. Just not super popular and there seems to be a decent amount if fear that the action isn't strong enough. Couple 8mm Mauser conversions as well

Yes, they're good. Best nuggets around. Not better than a Mauser or Enfield IMO. They are getting hard to find so unless you get a deal on a Finn, I'd just get some pre-war Russian that's in good shape and not worry about reselling it.
