Best first 1911?

I'm looking to own a 1911 as a range toy, nothing more. What's the top models to get that are under $1000?

Pic related?
>>
>>28021437
If it's under 1K, get the loaded model from Springfield.
>>
Colt obviously
>>
I think I paid $699 for my Ruger SR1911.

Great gun for what the value.

>>28021670
Just spend the $600 and get a beavertail, new mainspring housing (without ILS), new sights, and a new trigger and hammer that you want.

But there really is nothing wrong with the loaded and I'd recommend it to anyone. Part of me wishes that I had gone with the loaded instead but I liked the stainless steel frame and slide of the Mil-Spec so I'm gutting everything and replacing all of the internals and external parts with Ed Brown and Wilson Combat parts.

So unless you want to do the work to fix it up or unless you want the mil-spec A-1 style, go with the Loaded like the other anon said.
>>
an ria will do you good
>>
Depends on what you want, I suppose.

If a rail and features are your bag, I don't think anyone tops Sig for value.

Springfield makes good middle-tier 1911, albeit with some mismatched materials (interface component and beavertail materials are all different from the frame and slide).

If you love a minimal roll mark, the Dan Wesson Heritage is for you.

You need to sink AT LEAST $2000 into a 1911 to make it a good one.
>>
>>28022016
is this really true? i've shot a remington and a springfield and while both shot well, the springfield was consistently six inches low at about thirty feet.
i've seen ria's for 550 or so and would like to get one.

Buy a 1911 now and then buy one from CMP when they are released. I'd never complain about owning two or more 1911's.

Don't own one. My dad lent me $3000 to buy parts to build one since I'm under 21, but I ruined them trying to do the fitting. Mom got me a S&W 686 instead.

I swear by my SA Range Officer. It's a damn good gun for its price class.

There's just a little rattle between the slide and frame, but the barrel and bushing are unbelievably tight, which is where most say it matters. And I can back that up. Even with the black on black factory sights, it throws bullets precisely where I point them. Eventually, I'd like to add target sights with tritium posts and rounded edges (and maybe even an ambi safety) to make it a little more carry friendly, but that aside, it's as close as you'll get to a 1911 for less than a grand that's ready to go right out of the box.

Look for a form on the CMP website that you get signed by range staff to prove competence. CCLs also satisfy the firearms experience section. It's not strictly competition and join the Garand Collectors Association if you can't find a decent local club
>>
While the general consensus of this thread points to either waiting on the CMP or buying the tried and true variants.

If anyone's done some reading i'd like to ask a side question. Been looking for a slim semi auto and i found the GSG 1911's in 22.

Any thoughts on this? Figured it'd be a good start for 1911's and spare parts if i want a CMP gun later on...

If i wanted a very reliable weapon i'd get a glock clone. Who comes to the store of 1911's and asks for reliability under 500?
>>28027343
I take it then the story's of people building 1911's from parts that suit them is more of a fabrication then anything else then.
>>
I really want just a quality-but-no-frills GI-style 1911. I like the look of the original hammer, and the shorter trigger. Not going to be a carry piece, so I don't really care about not having night sights or what have you, as long as it's rugged and reliable.

I THINK I've boiled it down to the following:

Colt Series 70
CZ 1911-A1
Springfield Mil-spec

Which of these do I really want? Or is this just a terrible idea?
>>
>>28025187

I would like a series 70 but I reload and hear the unlowered ejection port dents brass.

Buy a barrel after if you have the money to spend on getting the barrel of your choice and having it properly fitted to your gun bushing if we are still talking 1911.

Nighthawk makes a threaded match grade barrel that I am somewhat tempted on getting.

Unless we are not talking about 1911's and the gun that you really want is available stock with a threaded barrel.

>>28022080
Yes. The 1911 was never supposed to be a tight clearance match grade pistol. It should be the Kalashnikov of handguns, loose clearances and rugged construction for combat reliability at the expense of match grade accuracy. RIA, building guns on Colt machinery, is the only company which is still true to that philosophy.

Under a grand the answer is SA Range Officer
Unless you are gonna fit a bunch of aftermarket parts yourself
>>
>>28032507
You could pull it out and the gun would still run. I wouldn't, but you could
>>
>>28031448
But that's the beauty of the 1911, you can have one that is entirely match grade and made for accuracy or you can have one that is built to loose standards and meant to run.

But there is no reason that a 1911 should be a complete tradeoff between reliability and accuracy. You can add a match grade barrel, high quality firing pin, extractor, ejector, and a nice trigger and hammer system without giving up reliability. You just have to pay for it. Polish the ramp and throat of the barrel and high quality bar-stock parts should outlast you and you shouldn't have any trouble feeding it.

I'm sure you could run cheap ammunition through it, but I wouldn't. Unless for some odd reason it was the only thing available and my life depended on it.

I'm building up my 1911 with all Ed Brown and Wilson Combat parts and having everything properly fitted. It's my fun gun. I might carry it every now and then but it'll mostly be a range gun and something to make me smile. My Sig and my Glock 19 are my work horses.
