OP here, was hoping someone knew the name of a book that I loved but have long forgotten. It was zombie apocalypse long after civ fell down. And people were paid to go out and put down zombies of peoples family members. Like if your dad was zombified they were payed to put them down. And they would wear rugs as body armor with the two main characters being a gruff older brother and the one we follow the younger brother. Both being asian

If you like history

"The savage continent" - post wwii Europe was brutal shithole, and people kept on killing eachother. This is a book about that.

Atomic accidents. - lots of cool anecdotes, and descriptions in easy, but precise language.

Dangerous Thoughts - one of my friends was a major soviet dissident, this is his memoir. Also see: grey is the colour of hope. Goddamn inspiring stories of badass people.

They don't use firearms. There is like no guns whatsoever. Very strange for a book about a military. Like the closes it mentions is during orbital drops the pods release a lot of stuff to confuse ballistic computers.

I been reading the SAS survival handbook. Haven't gotten far enough into it that I'd recommend it but it's got a lot of useful pictures on animals and plant species.

anyway there is a book called "soldier of valor" or something like that, sounds like your typical gay ass stupid memoirs from 'nam but its actually a documentation of different types of cliqs and militias formed in the jungles of Argentina and South africa by ex US/UK/AUS soldiers. basically real life big boss from MGS stories it was an amazing book. the only two groups I remember were the Orc klan and Black Devils. fuck I wish I could read that book again.

Reality (or claimed to be):
Dear Mom: A sniper's Vietnam - Good
Chickenhawk (slick pilot) - Very good & sad
Making a killing (awesome PMC adventures) - Extremely recommended
Escape from Baghdad (PMC adventures the sequel) - Decent, not special
A long way gone (child soldierin') - Decent
The forgotten soldier - Timeless operator classic, must read
Storm of steel - Timeless operator classic, must read
SOG (americans owning & getting owned) - Educational
Acceptable loss (more Vietnam LRRP & Blue Apaches) - Good
Shake hands with the devil (UN ROE suck balls) - Educational
On war - Educational but overhyped
War is a racket - Interesting
The art of war - Classic, but mostly blatantly obvious

Fiction:
The dogs of war - Timeless classic, must read
Roadside picnic - Get out of here, stalker
I am Legend - Decent classic
Catch-22 - Timeless operator classic, must read
The road - Decent, but hugely overhyped
A canticle for Liebowitz - If post-apoc is your thing

As for the hard scifi pile, read it all, you won't be disappointed. Start with Douglas Adams, then go to Heinlein, transition to Haldeman/Scalzi & go back for PKD.

I mean, it did make sense. It had a whole chapter on why civil servants were given the privilege of governance while the citizenry was still able to prosper.

Honestly, seems better than the mob rule "promise the most shit to get into power" system we have today, but that's not saying much.

>>28005933
>>28003029
The Forgotten Soldier should be required reading in high school
>>
>>28006857
Not really, because the military (ie. voting) caste got to make political decisions for those who did not do military service. And since military service is service to the government, I'm sure you can see the massive conflict of interest that arises when the only people who can make decisions about government are the people who worked for the government.
>>
>>28006938
'sit about anon?
>>
>>28006962
Obviously it's oversimplification. I mean, the government would have abso-fucking-lutely no clue on how to govern commerce or personal rights, but it is interesting that the virtue of civic duty is a requirement for government service. As it is with us, it's just charlatans duping the most people into a checkmark at the ballot box.

Most of the Jack Reacher books are pretty decent if you ignore some of the smaller things, especially in the earlier books.

They get kinda formulaic though but Lee Child seems to have addressed that and shaken it up a little bit recently
>>
The Turner Diaries, it's more /pol/ but it's still a good, edgy read.
>>
>>28006997
I think an interesting approach would be the other way around; any politician who wants to send the country to war should enter a lottery where he has a 50% chance of getting drafted to the front lines (not necessarily in a combat role, if he is physically unable, but carrying stretchers or cleaning the FOB). Might be a way to discourage chickenhawks who never have to suffer the consequences of their decisions.

Hunting for the inhumanly elusive and tough leader of the Mau Mau rebellion.

I'll throw in my two cents worth:
Non-fiction:
The March Up - Taking Baghdad with the 1st Marine Division by Bing West
No True Glory - A Frontline Account of the Battle of Fallujah

Fiction:
Anything by Ralph Peters, especially Red Army
Almost anything by Harold Coyle - Team Yankee is great, and his historical fiction (French and Indian War, Civil War) is pretty good, too.

Use of weapons by Ian M Banks.
It's scifi but good. Main character is based as fuck.

Seconding Destroyermen. Damn good series, although the latest book was essentially one big battle sequence - still entertaining, but a break would be nice. Still, reading about the application of 102mm high explosive directly to shitty wooden ship is seriously boner inducing.

While we're talking fantasy/sci-fi, I recommend Eisenhorn. I know, it's 40k, but it's also one of the least 40k-ish of the books set in the universe, and is an excellent tale of the rise and fall of a man and the people around him.

Nobody's said it yet so All Quiet on the Western Front is pretty damn good. WWI German action, although it's pretty much just getting shelled for like 250 pages.

Only Veterans could vote in the book while those currently on active duty did not have franchise yet. Also franchise was guaranteed at the completion of service whether you did 2 year enlistment or an entire career.

What was interesting is that certain jobs in the book were set aside solely for veterans such as police and the History & Moral Philosophy teacher. Meanwhile Johnny's dad was a wealthy businessman who had never served which meant the only real benefit out of service was earning your franchise.

There is no real conflict of interest because those who are legally able to vote are no longer in the military.

They're solid entertainment and the some of the better Reacher novels are really captivating.

If you think military service doesn't come with pro-government propaganda these days, you've never served.

I'm from before le digital era, and downloading books is awesome. I used to think it was cancerous, but then I got an ereader when I went on vacation. I read around 6 books, for which I'd have had no room in the luggage. You can read it without a light on courtesy of an adjustable backlight. And you can instantly look up obscure or archaic words via whatever dictionaries you want to have on there. And the best part? You can be a scumbag and pirate books for free.

I like books too, of course, but ereaders really are an amazing development.

>If you think military service doesn't come with pro-government propaganda these days, you've never served.

Funny I served for 12 years and have no love of government.

>served for 12 years
>no love of government
You sure have a funny way of showing it.
>>
>>28022067

You don't have to love the government to serve in the military you tard. There are lots of people who serve who don't care for the government.

And yet all you're doing by serving is helping the government in exchange for a paycheck. Or did you drink the flavor-aid and believe that you're protecting are freedoms from the nasty terrorists?

Country =/= Government

Governments change, countries don't.

Still a worthwhile read.

>And yet all you're doing by serving is helping the government in exchange for a paycheck.

Exactly. The same as I would be doing working for any business engaged in badthink industry as a civilian worker.

I got my BA paid for by tuition assistance while on active duty and I used my GI Bill to start working on my MBA. I got some alright training, some nice blurbs to put on my resume, saw some great countries and not so great countries.

>Or did you drink the flavor-aid and believe that you're protecting are freedoms from the nasty terrorists?

I could give two shits about YOUR freedoms new friend.

Try not to envy h8 to much.
>>

>give two shits about YOUR freedoms
You'd better, since you did it on my dime.

I understand why you believe nothing bad would happen if only veterans could vote. This level of doublethink, and one would believe anything.

My pointing out what Heinlein wrote in Starship Troopers is neither an endorsement of those thoughts nor what I think a government should be. Nice try though.

Try not to be so butthurt anon.

yet somehow this equates to love/support/endorsement of said government? I work at a fuckin grocery store, I'm not gonna get a free degree out of it. Plenty sign up as if it were just another job, because to many including me that's all it is.
