Would those positions be in my platoon or battery? I'd think a master gunner would be an E7?

What were your least favorite and favorite parts of the officers you served with?

E-6 will be your FDC chief, E-5 should be your master computer operator, E-7 should be your digital master gunner.

I couldn't stand most of the FDOs that I had, because a lot of them cared more about earning their golden kneepads than actual fire missions.

tl;dr? listen to folks that give you advice. On the other hand, don't be a pushover yes-man. learn when to stand up for yourself and your men. and for the love of god, don't ever EVER EVER think of doing anything just to please someone above you. just do what's right at the time, and be prepared to defend your choice.
