That's a original licence produced J-11A, built from Russian kits and equipped with obsolete Russian original radars.

The Chinese Flanker copy began with the J-11B, which is equipped with modern radars and composites.

I can somehow understand their wish for a rip-off, as the original they got was shit, even if it wasnt a monkey model - the original russian flankers were that bad and russia had nothing better to offer at that time.

How close is the j10 to the gripen in terms of performance anyway? I cant imagine them being too different. I know the gripen has better air tomground weapons but what else?

Different class. Gripen is more like JF-17 and the J-10 is in the class of the F-16.
