Still common with the Eastern combat philosophy as seen with the PSL and SVD. I think its kind of cool. Even if you break your scope or in some way lose your zero the rifle is still useful.

I read that in WW2 some snipers actually did take off their scopes in some situations since they didn't want to take the risk of the scope glaring and also because it afforded a much lower, smaller profile. It's the reason for those Swiss scopes that mounted on the side of the rifle. Also, during WW2, most scopes were not permanently mounted on the rifle, but kept in a separate carrying case, that protected it.

In my (shitty) defense, it's my first gun and I've only put about 20-30 rounds through it myself, and I'd shoot more often but 7.5x55 is expensive and hard to find.
