What are the basic principles and methods of reconnaissance / scouting in both civilian and military settings?

Does it just boil down to just staying quiet, be unseen and return with as much intel as possible?

What else goes into it?

Depends on your mission m8.

Reconing for what?

Knowing the lay of the land as much as possible beforehand.

Having a plan of entry and exit from the area, with multiple backup paths.

Becoming one with the surroundings, not a rock, stone, tree, or anything specific, but just the locale as a whole.

Always move towards or away from enemy position, because sideways movement is easier to detect.

Always insert right on top of your target location so you don't get spotted sneaking up from far away.

If you've ever had any questions about squad or platoon level tactics and doctrine, read this:

You could literally just camouflage a position, grab a spotting scope with 70x zoom, stay near a road and radio any enemy movement to friendly intelligence units, counting vehicles and different vehicle types, time of movement, direction etc.

For example "12 APCs, 20 trucks and 4 tanks went north at midnight" or "20 trucks exited this compound today and 30 trucks came in".

Basically, you send information and someone else uses that information (not you, you just observe).

For vehicles, you send a scout unit down a road/field/whatever and see if it sees something or suddenly explodes. I think.

Adding to this, the big picture comes from several scout units.

Those 20 trucks were spotted on this road but the other team down the road did not spot them.

What is between these two teams? Cities, more roads? Did the trucks drive into some compound or did they scatter into forests to deliver supplies? Who needs those supplies? How often do trucks do this? Is this whole area good for staging a larger attack? Etc. etc.

There are different types of reconnaissance.

"Green" operations are when you go in purely to gather intelligence about the area. They go in lightly armed. Just carbines for self-defense. No air support or artillery support. They look around, then leave. If even a single shot is fired, the operation is aborted.

"Black" operations are when you go in looking for the enemy. Usually, artillery or air support is there to help. The team will be used to direct artillery or close air support onto appropriate targets. A common objective could be to board a specific vessel or enter a specific building to see what is inside.

And remember to kill any shepherds on your path.

Seems like a good resource. Any other goodies like that?

Most field manuals are pretty useful, and freely available online. Don't let those chucklefucks at your local surplus store sell you one for $10.

Huh. This site used to have free access, but that appears to have changed. No idea how I can get to that one manual directly without a login, though.

The remaining unseen part is just so you don't die. Most people are so pig headed that they will continue doing what they are doing even if they know someone spotted them.
