The fact that no one else decided to build comparable heavy lift choppers is a bit disappointing - the Mi-26 has about the same max payload weight of a C-130, so many foreign countries necessitated such high lift capability from a helicopter that I don't see why the US or Europe don't try to compete. Duh. I mean even NATO used Mi-26's under contract.

It's affectionately known as the Disco Ball. IR countermeasures unit. Obsolete now. There's newer, better things out there that work much better. Basically, all the ALQ did was mask the aircraft's presence against the background, making it harder for the missile to get a solid lock. Not nearly as effective as some of the stuff out there now. I want to say it was around 2011 or 2012 when most Army units started phasing out the ALQ for the newer stuff like CMWS.
