Martial arts come and go in styles. Basically, they go around in cycles. First, it's an obscure martial art only practiced by serious/obsessive practitioners. Then it becomes the meme super-style. Then suddenly every town has a school taught by an alleged Obsidian Belt 12th degree. Finally, it becomes a thinly veiled fitness class at the YMCA. Then there's a crash.

Krav Maga is somewhere between meme style and wannabe style right now. Like most martial arts, you'll be able to handle yourself in a fight if you take it seriously and develop your skills. No martial art will save you vs gun, even krav maga-- the antigun moves are nice but even they admit it's last ditch, probably won't work, and in the real world are taught alongside firearms skills.

Krav Maga is a nice style with some cool ideas. It's refreshingly practical, focused on real world survival, and recognizes and adapts to modern weapons (both using them and defending from them).

But it's gotten too popular, too fast and has been drastically overhyped. Odds are, your teacher will be training you in the watered down jazzercize form that strips out the combat training and makes it safe and fun for recreation. That's assuming the teacher actually knows krav maga at all-- it's easy to get a class taught by a con man.
