What is the single most unethical mission that the US military has ever carried out?
>>
All humanitarian missions.

Give a man a fish and he'll just starve a few weeks after eating it.

It is not a military's role to save shitfucks from their own shitfuck lifestyle.

nuking hiroshima and nagasaki 6 months after they already received transmissions of acceptable surrender conditions from the lead japanese diplomats that would end the war with zero more american lives lost and zero civilians nuked.

It was a total myth that the options were "nuke or invade", it was "nuke vs. accept very slightly less than perfect surrender from japan" and America went with the massive war crime of nuking cities for the hell of it.

Prove him wrong then. The Japanese were willing to negotiate surrender to the Soviets to try to secure some peace, but they had no intention of doing so towards the Americans or British.
Not until the bombs dropped did they offer full, unconditional, surrender. And even after that many officers in the Japanese Army tried to capture the Emperor and prevent the surrender message from being broadcasted.
You claim he's parroting what the government says, but you're doing worse and just spewing conspiracy theories with no basis.

Yes, the nukes were unnecessary. There other alternatives to ending the war with Japan. Invasion, continued firebombings, blockading with submarines and surface ships to starve out the Japanese.
Those would all require much more time and would have lead to more American and Japanese deaths.
Any claim of Japan's willingness to surrender is negated by the fact they did not. They did not after the war turned against them, they did not after the firebombings, they did not after the Potsdam Declaration, they did not after the first Atomic bomb.
They were not ready to surrender, they were ready for a fight to the end. Teaching civilians to fight with spears or poorly made firearms, stocking up suicide aircraft and boats, and building defenses. Watch Day of the Kamikaze, they interview civilians who talk about learning how to fight with spears.
Perhaps the US wanted to see the effects of the atomic bomb, or show off to the USSR, but those were just side-effects of using the weapon to end the war.

The good old "Japan wanted to surrender!" line.

http://faculty.virginia.edu/usdiphis/readings/Frank,%20Why%20Truman%20Dropped%20the%20bomb.pdf

>The conduit for this initiative was Japan's ambassador in Moscow, Naotake Sato. He communicated with Foreign Minister Togo--and, thanks to code breaking, with American policymakers. Ambassador Sato emerges in the intercepts as a devastating cross-examiner ruthlessly unmasking for history the feebleness of the whole enterprise. Sato immediately told Togo that the Soviets would never bestir themselves on behalf of Japan. The foreign minister could only insist that Sato follow his instructions. Sato demanded to know whether the government and the military supported the overture and what its legal basis was--after all, the official Japanese position, adopted in an Imperial Conference in June 1945 with the emperor's sanction, was a fight to the finish. The ambassador also demanded that Japan state concrete terms to end the war, otherwise the effort could not be taken seriously. Togo responded evasively that the "directing powers" and the government had authorized the effort--he did not and could not claim that the military in general supported it or that the fight-to-the-end policy had been replaced. Indeed, Togo added: "Please bear particularly in mind, however, that we are not seeking the Russians' mediation for anything like an unconditional surrender."
>>
9/11
>>
>>25305099
>This last comment triggered a fateful exchange. Critics have pointed out correctly that both Under Secretary of State Joseph Grew (the former U.S. ambassador to Japan and the leading expert on that nation within the government) and Secretary of War Henry Stimson advised Truman that a guarantee that the Imperial Institution would not be eliminated could prove essential to obtaining Japan's surrender. The critics further have argued that if only the United States had made such a guarantee, Japan would have surrendered. But when Foreign Minister Togo informed Ambassador Sato that Japan was not looking for anything like unconditional surrender, Sato promptly wired back a cable that the editors of the "Magic" Diplomatic Summary made clear to American policymakers "advocate[s] unconditional surrender provided the Imperial House is preserved." Togo's reply, quoted in the "Magic" Diplomatic Summary of July 22, 1945, was adamant: American policymakers could read for themselves Togo's rejection of Sato's proposal--with not even a hint that a guarantee of the Imperial House would be a step in the right direction. Any rational person following this exchange would conclude that modifying the demand for unconditional surrender to include a promise to preserve the Imperial House would not secure Japan's surrender.

It's really not the Japanese. They know they were dicks deep down, although publicly they refuse to admit it, they know they have no ground to stand on for saying something another nation did during WW2 was bad.
They even refused to accept an apology when Obama tried to say sorry for Hiroshima.
When you see someone saying the atomic bombs were unneeded, warcrimes, etc. It's usually some liberal, westerner, probably a college student, who has no knowledge of how brutal the war was up to that point.

I certainly hope you don't mean you think Lincoln said he was going to end slavery when he was elected. He gave a speech and said that at some point in the future, the US would have to agree to either be all states with slaves or outlaw it (House divided speech). He said NOTHING about if he favored one side over the other, and even after the Emancipation Proclamation it only affected slaves in the Southern states in rebellion. It was a war measure to free slaves in those states so that they could not be used to help the South's war effort, the Northern states that still had slaves and stayed loyal to the Union had no changes to their lifestyle. Only until after the war and the 13th Amendment did those loyal states lose their slaves.
The South seceeding was nothing more than throwing a hissy fit and jumping to conclusions.

>>
>>25305288
Fun fact. The US was preparing in mid August to shift its bombing campaign from night time fire bombing to daylight attacks. Part of this was because there wasn't much that could burn in Japan left standing. Part of it was also that Japanese air defense had collapsed and American aircraft had more or less free reign over Japan. The plan was to focus the B-29s on Japan's transportation system, to stop what what was left of Japanese industry, and to cripple any ability to shift forces to respond to an invasion.

Now while "destroying transportation" might sound nicer than firebombing cities, in reality it probably would have been worse. In combination with the previous destruction of waterborne transportation through underwater and aerial campaigns, the Japanese would have basically no ability left to move food around. The result would have been mass famine.

That planned transportation destruction was also why people like LeMay and the Bombing Survey thought Japan was going to surrender pretty sound. But it would have been a surrender coupled with hundreds of thousands of starved civilians.

Well, all of our military leaders and commanders unanimously agree the war was effectively won and the bomb was unnecessary. I'd say having all the people who are in positions of expert knowledge on the matter having the unanimous agreement does carry some weight.

>Under Secretary of the Navy Ralph Bird said: “I think that the Japanese were ready for peace, and they already had approached the Russians and, I think, the Swiss. And that suggestion of [giving] a warning [of the atomic bomb] was a face-saving proposition for them, and one that they could have readily accepted. In my opinion, the Japanese war was really won before we ever used the atom bomb."

>According to an account by Walter Brown, assistant to then-US secretary of state James Byrnes, Truman agreed at a meeting three days before the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima that Japan was “looking for peace”. Truman was told by his army generals, Douglas Macarthur and Dwight Eisenhower, and his naval chief of staff, William Leahy, that there was no military need to use the bomb.” “Impressing Russia was more important than ending the war in Japan,”

The japs would have surrendered weeks prior if we simply agreed to the retention of the institution of the emperor--which we ultimately agreed to anyways. The entire thing was simply a testing ground and also to wave a big dick in stalin's face.

That's how they felt, but the Japanese weren't really quite ready to surrender at that moment. Lots of hardliners inside their government, pressuring the emperor to fight to the bitter end. Hell, one of their actions on the Potsdam declaration was to "kill it with silence", which roughly translates to no comment. The fighting would continue, the kamikazes would continue, until the Allies become war-weary and negotiate with the Japanese on the Japanese's terms.

All of those comments are post facto. None of them are contemporary (Leahy for example only comment about the atomic bomb was that it wouldn't work).

Meanwhile, the most important military official in Washington, Chief of the Army General Marshall, didn't think the war was effectively over and the Japanese were about to surrender. In fact he after the bombings and after the Soviet Manchurian invasion he still thought the Japanese might hold out. When Truman ordered that the third bomb not be dropped as soon as it was ready, Marshall agreed not out of humanitarian reasons, but because he wanted to start stockpiling them to drop on Japanese divisions when the invasion he still thought may be needed happened.

Meanwhile the Japanese Soviet overrture is again quoted as proof the Japanese were ready to surrender, when in reality it demonstrated the Japanese didn't have terms ready to give their own ambassador!

A couple ships carrying war contraband is not worth sending over a hundred thousand young men to their deaths. The only reason the Germans started carrying out unrestricted submarine warfare in the first place was due to Wilson not doing shit about the illegal British blockade of Germany and allowing them to have their armed merchant ships fly under American flags. If America should have gone to war with anyone during World War I it was Britain. The civil war was one of those situations where the truth truly does lie closer to the middle.

Pretending the south were completely innocent victims is foolish. However, for someone talking about "credibility", your assertion that there was no northern aggression doesn't lend you any.

The north was every bit as belligerent as the south, and exploited their advantage in representation before the war to basically strong arm tax revenue from uniquely southern goods.

Not related to your post but...slavery was at the root of many reasons why the civil war happened, however no one went to war over slavery.

Consistent access to food and health care decreases birth rates because you don't need as many children to ensure having a few of them survive.

Malthusian economics is a dramatically oversimplified view of human population dynamics.

Eh, an argument can be made that the war itself was a result of the north being aggressive and not posturing for a fight

>Enraged by a guerrilla massacre of U.S. troops on the Island of Samar, General Jacob H. Smith retaliated by carrying out an indiscriminate attack upon its inhabitants.[110] His order "KILL EVERY ONE OVER TEN" became a caption in the New York Journal cartoon on May 5, 1902. The Old Glory draped an American shield on which a vulture replaced the bald eagle. The bottom caption exclaimed, "Criminals Because They Were Born Ten Years Before We Took the Philippines". Published in the New York Journal-American, May 5, 1902. Smith was eventually court-martialed by the American military and forced to retire.[110]

Having an indirect role in war crimes automatically means it's on the lower rung of international crimes. The question was what is the MOST unethical crime committed.

That guy above mentioned the massacres in the Philippines.

There were also a lot of atrocities against Injuns and in Vietnam.

>Just gave them more work, and Germans live to work
That reminds me, I remember reading somewhere about some German POWs that got bored sitting around doing nothing, so they asked the Americans for work. They ended up building a library or something. I don't know.

"I believe the Americans only had one bomb after all" ~Korechi Anami, Japanese war minister after bombing of Hiroshima.

Japs still wouldn't surrender after the second one until we agreed to maintain a role for the emperor.

You don't know shit about ww2.
>>
>>25303856

Japan in its "surrender" had demands the US didn't agree to. That's how war fucking works. Don't like it, don't start it. Easy as that.

Also Japan never sent the offer directly to the US.

Because the retard that saved the pic didn't make it a jpg. PNG is fucking terrible for size-image when there's lots of colors.

Use PNG when, for example, you're posting an image that's just one color with some text. JPG is shit to do that, PNG is awesome.

Lincoln didn't free ALL the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation because he did not believe himself to have Constitutional Authority to do that in states that were under US Governmental control.

His legal justification, which held up to judicial review, for the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves in the Southern states was that, because of the fact that they were engaging in open revolt against the Union, they were therefore US Military Districts, and he could issue direct orders over those states as Commander in Chief.

Therefore, the Emancipation Proclamation did not apply in the other states of the union, which is why he planned on a Constitutional Amendment to free ALL the slaves at once.

Lincoln was not only a pretty shrewd President, but also a decent strategist, both politically and militarily. Declaring martial law in Virginia literally saved the Union when the war had just broken out.
