Boots that you've worn in, beret, patches, nametag and other metal bits that are supposed to go on a uniform. Not much in other words.
Even the uniform gets returned here to be used by someone else.

I worked supply in the US Army. Unless you retire you don't get to keep much at all. Just getting out at the end of contract? You get to keep used boots, tshirts, socks and your cap. No field gear. If you retire, you get to keep your dress uniform.

Not a milfag here.

Why do I get an impression that the military suddenly dump you on the streets within a week notice or something. Don't you guys get like couple months notice in advance or something? Like a period where you start planning what to do next instead of wandering the streets with nothing when the day comes. Does the military provide no connections to civilian jobs at all for any field that may be useful. Or they don't give a fuck?
>>
>>23287015

>>
>>23287229
Lots of soldiers join when they're young

They have all their basic needs taken care of

They waste their paycheck

They get a massive dose of real world when they leave

I don't have any sympathy
>>
>>23287229
Usually, yes, there's a bit of planning involved. In recent times, the military has taken quite a few steps on making sure people getting out understand the resources available to them and what exactly they'll need to think about before they leave. Before leaving the navy I went to a week long TAPS-GPS class that covered everything from writing job resumes, balancing a budget, and even basic investments and credit building practices.

However, sometimes your particular situation might be fucked. In my case, I was on a deployment until literally a month before my separation, so I was sent through the class in with about two weeks left in the military, when it's supposed to be done when you're around six months before getting out. I talked to a few people there who were being administratively separated and they had even less time than I did before they were to be cut free.
>>
>>23287229
They give you a week long course of useless information about your VA benefits as well as GI Bill benefits. That's it, the other stuff is all on the service member. Most people 3 months from the EAS are done with the military and give no shits. Hence the horrible time they have once they get out.
>>
>>23287300
This is sad, I don't want this to happen to me m8
>>
>>23287291

>>23287257
Not a milfag, but my dad installed and calibrated the missle guidance syatems back in the 80s, and he blew his checks on whores and booze like everyone else, but he left with great job experience. As long as you're not one of the joe blows whos specialty is shootin and guarding, you leave with experience, like any other job. Its similar to that firat job conundrum, you need a good job experience to get a good job. The Army can give you a fast track, if you do the right tasks.

or so my dad said.
>>
>>23287316
Been out two years and finally able to land a decent job and school is doing well. Military doesn't give a fuck about the people that are getting out. Even my home unit did jack shit to see me off in my last weeks. I don't hate em for it, its just life.

Uniforms and anything issued that touched your skin.

I kept ACUs, FRACUs, UCP combat shirts, boots, head gear, PASGT helmet, rucksack, an old LBV and a newer TAP, dress uniform, probably some other stuff. It's all in tubs in my garage.

It's not so bad. A lot of dudes can handle and can come back to civilian life. Some dudes just get lost and forgotten. It's the nature of the beast so to speak. A lot of dudes signed up during the current conflicts expecting it to be a cool adventure of manhood. All it takes is one incident to completely offset that delusion. The US is an empire that conquers for monetary gain. Money the majority of us will never see outside of pumping gas. If you can't accept that it's going to be a hard ride. The government doesn't care about you especially once you get out. It's every man for himself.

This is the biggest issue. You get a lot of thank yous, but most jobs don't give a fuck unless the job recruiter was military or LEO. They think all military (especially Marines) as retarded jarhead grunts with no applicable skills.
>>
>>23287338
>good job experience to get a good job. The Army can give you a fast track
Hahaha this nigger is serious.

The Army doesn't train you to get a job after your contract is over, the Army trains you to fill a specifically required MOS at the time of your enlistment.

Granted, some MOS with a very small community may lead to future employment (and even then due to Federal hiring practices require civilian education), it is rare.
>>23287382
>..how did you keep the helmet, ruck, LBV and TAP?
S-4 at my unit didn't want the PASGT, ruck, or LBV back, and the TAP was never on my clothing record it was just handed to me at CIF.

>>23287414

This.

Honestly, the whole "job skills/experience" line is just that, a line of bullshit and a recruiting tool to get people that may think twice to enlist.

The only thing you can really do is get out and use your Post 9/11 for free college.

I hated the military from the day I enlisted. I don't even know why I did it.. probably because I was young and dumb. It's just pure incompetence from the moment you join. I got my hunting license when I was 10 so I knew a fair bit about sighting in rifles. I had to convince my drill sergeant that he was full of shit and let me sight in my rifle my own way. Went on to be a top shooter in the company and no one gave me shit after that. Guys were asking to use my rifle in qualification because they couldn't figure it out. That is the military.. you have no control over your own destiny. Retards control you over there and get you and your friends killed.

I don't want to make a seperate thread for this but, i want to join the airforce for what MOS i don't know yet, i can pass all the qualifications for the PT with flying colors right now, and as of right now i'm in community college taking only 1 class, next semester i might only take 3 classes, basically i feel somewhat lost and bored in life right now, i have no one to talk to or run or lift with, would joining it for 4 years be a good idea if i went to a recruiter sometime this summer??

I took the asvab a few months ago and got an 80 flat, i need the money also since i can't seem to get a steady job with no facebook, also i'm pretty sure it will help me grow as a person, also i'm good at following orders, i'd really like to do an airborne MOS which i could be in the air most of the time.

Any opinions/insight would help out since for a good year i've been thinking of this, though i just barely came out of highschool and i'm 19 right now.

i'm pretty sure i can save up my money i make in the military+GI bill will make it really cheap to start back off in CC then transfer to a university, right?? I'm kinda of a hermit and i have a few hundred $$$ saved up since i don't use it for things.

Best time to see a recruiter would be about now when they're slow for departures. Summer time is their busy period because of all the kiddies graduating who didn't think about college. You'll also probably have to wait a bit to get in, as the Air Force usually has no trouble making it's quotas, so it would probably be wise to check in know. You don't have to commit to anything before you're officially in, so it doesn't hurt to ask.

Just from my own experiences, Air Force recruiters seem to be a lot more hands off. As in, they won't go out of their way as often as the other branches because they don't want for recruits much. Like when I was researching which branch to join, I had to drive to meet the AF recruiter an hour away. The Marine recruiter offered to pick me up when he was passing by and the Navy guy straight up offered to come meet me at my house. This was the better part of a decade ago though, so attitudes may have changed and, of course, the recruiter may very be a great person or douche on their own initiative.

GI Bill is only for Full Time Students, so if you're CC plans are less than 12 credit/hours a semester, you might need to wait until your able to go full time. Otherwise you got a fairly straight idea.

Eagle Scout here. I go to a big time state University with AFROTC, NROTC, and ROTC.

Enlisted family told me to stick with whatever I want to do and be officer not enlisted no matter what. To be honest my life is cheap thrills, and I know real combat will be nothing like I expect probably one hundred times beyond that. I can't explain this desire. I'm not doing it for country or any philosophy. Just want to see my potential.

Big fan of metal gear, but I know its nothing like that. Only reason I mention it is an increased interest in working for a PMC after four years of active duty. Not even sure what I want to do. I'm looking for guidance.

Maybe Navy SWCC? I wear glasses. Won't mention anything else. I'm a big guy, inactive boxer, obese but getting back in to shape.

I've played with M249's, M4, some 50 cal, a giant mounted turret I don't remember, .22's, remi 870's pump 12 guage.

Would I get to keep a handgun after serving? Any gun?

It isn't that much.

If 375 is really a large weight for you, you must be new to deadlifting. I can pull 375 for reps after a 18 hour shift (manual labor job) on 4 hours of sleep and haven't having eaten anything all day.

375 might be a decent weight if you weigh 135lbs. Your deadlift isn't worth mentioning until you can pull 3x your bodyweight.

I didn't get to keep much, but my favorite thing was the CVC I used during my second deployment. I was a Combat Medic attached to an armored platoon. Before I ETS'd, my tankers touched up the paint job and gave it to me as a thank-you present.

I fucking love my CVC. It's one of my prized possessions.

I'm just looking for any advice. From what you're saying PMC job in the future ain't too bright.

I'd like to know why if there's a specific reason. I'll just google it shouldn't be too hard.

Oh and my background is poor, immigrant family, MGS was essentially my escape for the longest time, from almost dying to family almost dying and having traumatic brain injury.

I think I like the stress and pain.

For all I know shit's improved. But I seriously fucking doubt it.

Way back when, when I was with the Rakkasans, our BC was COL Steele. Yes, THAT Steele. Black Hawk Down Steele. He was under some strange impression that he was still in a Ranger battalion. He was dead fucking wrong. Dudes were falling out left, right, and center with all sorts of injuries. Our 1SG hadn't even deployed once at that point and he told the entire company that their CIBs "weren't shit". The 187th was the death of motivation, hope, and happiness.

As long as you're attached to a line company, it's the best damn job in the Army. The whole key to being happy in the service is being a special little snowflake, like being a Combat Medic in a company full of tankers. You're different, so you're treated differently (in a good way). I was assigned to the PSG's tank and acted as the loader. Pic is related, getting ready for a patrol.

I was an MP when I first enlisted, but changed my MOS after a few years. I went to Fort Sam as prior service and loved every second of it. Honestly, it's one of the highlights of my service. I never got stationed in Germany or Italy or anywhere cool, just Texas and Georgia. San Antonio is one of the best cities I've ever stayed in, and I wouldn't hesitate to move back there some day in the future.

It's only 16 weeks of AIT, but it's accelerated training, so there's testing every other day, sometimes every day of the week. Lots of material being taught in a short period of time. You'll come out with an EMT-Basic certification, so that'll be useful once you get out of the service.

Overall, I wish I had signed up as a Combat Medic from the very beginning.

The one and only cool legit thing I got to keep from my time in the Army was a genuine "war trophy" in the form of a bayonet that was found as part of a cache search. Besides a bunch of AKs, RPG, and IED parts, there was a crate of bayonets, and our XO and CO signed a DD 603-1 for each of us to keep one. I keep it on top of a cabinet with my shadow box and other moto bullshit. Please pardon the blurry ass shitty picture.

You know when your enlistment expires. A lot of people keep a short timers calendar. You start being aware about 6 months before your separation, unless you're being kicked out. In that case you could have as little as 2 weeks advance notice.

People getting fired or laid off from Burger King or McDonnell-Douglas don't get that kind of advance notice.

Because a lot of GWOT guys are getting out and there are experienced shooters taking those jobs.
>I'd like to know why if there's a specific reason. I'll just google it shouldn't be too hard.
See above. And the only contracting jobs that seem to be constant with less competition than WHPs/PSD is Maritime (which you need a cert for and doesn't pay as much as PSD) and Intel (relatively tiny community for all branches and has specialized skills and education) and IT.

>>
>>23288889
>cause the contract is the final destination of who you are signing up as a teenager

The only reason I stuck with it is because I knew they had me by the balls. There is no honor in obligating your fuckin contract to the US government. You're a slave through and through. They try to convince you that what you're fighting for matters.. but anyone with an IQ above goat level doesn't care. It's just a means to an end.
>>
>>23288919
Considering that 17 year old gets free food, free housing, subsidized clothing, free medical care for everything, free transportation to and from work, and 30 days paid vacation per year, I think there's maybe a little entitlement complex going on. Civilians have to pay for all or most of the above listed perks, except the vacation if they luck into a job that has paid vacation. Which usually starts at 1 week per year, gradually increasing to 3 or 4 weeks per year after you've been there for years.

Factor that all in and mil pay isn't bad at all. They even have money management classes, so the young dumbass argument doesn't really work either.

When I enlisted, I was making $400 per month after bootcamp. All my needs were met, so that was pure mad money. When I wanted more, I jumped through the advancement hoops. I was also eat up with the dumb ass, but you start to grow out of it after a while.
>>
>>23288997
Of course there's no honor in the contract. It's a legal agreement. A business deal. The wild eyed zealots who signed up to defend Murrica from the godless commies scared the piss out of me. I signed up because it was better than mall copping, which I was doing before enlisting. Most people I knew signed up for the pay and bennies. There were also a fuckton of homies enlisting to get out of town while the heat died down. I figured that out years after the fact. Serious, OG style gangbangers actually make prime E-4/E-5 material. For a lot of different reasons, some pretty complicated.

It's a job. That's why people sign up.
