I doubt they wanted to kill Halo - With how Destiny is literally fucking Halo (even down to a big chunk of the terminology, enemy design, Ghost's being your AI companion, etc) they probably approach Microsoft about making a Halo MMO. Some suit at MS probably said "No. You will make us Halo 4 and not some Halo MMO" and then Bungie staff likely would just mass quit at this point.

Bungie gives Microsoft Halo as an IP, and they leave to go make the game they wanted to, but all without the decade worth of Lore they had built up.

Microsoft tends to make really bad business decisions. Where as Electronic Arts destroys Franchises, EA milk's franchises and ruins studios (but keeps the IP content itself really nice), Microsft just has a history of not using common fucking sense. The fact they dumped millions into Mass Effect, being the primary source of funding for that game and never secured it for the Xbox exclusively? Holy shit.

I plan on getting an Xbone and the Master Chief collection, and that'll be my last Halo franchise purchase. I want to play Halo 2 online again, and fight through Delta Halo with my ODST.

It's sad though. I was so heavily invested in the franchise and loved it so much. Hell, I have a 6' tall statue of the chief from Halo 2 dual wielding SMG's. To this day, I still have that glorious beast watching over my entertainment center. It's kind of incredible to think of how quickly somebody can kill a franchise. I think the thing that I liked aobut the Halo books is that the SPARTAN I/II's in those were actually pretty covert as fuck. Like some of the operator shit they pulled in those books was awesome.

While in the game you are pretty much just run n gun blow em all up space marine.

Halo Evoltuions is a collection of short stories. Head Hunters and The Mona Lisa are two real gems. Human Weakness is pretty good and deals with Cortana's torture at the hands of the Gravemind between Halo 2-3. It was personal, but done tastefully unlike Halo 4.
