We have multiple instances of artists getting details wrong in official Touhou works.
SSiB had Lily White and Lily Black together in the same scene.
ZUN confessed that the artist also got the Lunarian weapons completely wrong.
Both SSiB and CoLA got Marisa's eye color wrong on multiple occasions.

ZUN is a busy guy, and likely does not have the time to look over all the art that his manga artists put out. More likely than not, he simply sends his artists an outline of what he wants them to draw in a scene, and the artist has liberty in deciding certain details such as the specifics of clothing or unimportant background cameos. So using visuals specifically from the manga to support your head canon, which has no basis in anything else from official canon, is willful ignorance at best.

Of course, knowing how discussions of this manner usually go, you'll probably start crying about how Moe is different or how ZUN literally controls everything published under his name at all times nowadays. Or you'll just post ZUN art expecting some sort of point to be made magically.

I'm sorry, I've only ever discussed this topic on other boards, I didn't expect a resonable response. But yes, I agree that Marisa probably isn't as short as CoLA art makes her look. That's likely a byproduct of the artist emphasizing Rinnosuke's height in order to make him visually stand out as a more masculine figure, as well as to emphasize the perceived youthfulness of Marisa in comparison.

I think that a meta explanation makes more sense here than trying to come up with an in-universe reasoning. I mean, if I were to be honest, I personally think that all youkai have some limited degree of shapeshifting capabilities, but I wouldn't use art from the manga to support this claim. I don't think it matters if you like winged Aya or wolf eared Momiji, just don't pretend that your interpretation is any more valid because one of the pieces of manga art agrees with you, especially when that art contradicts other sources without making some sort of assumption.

Why is OP right but other artists "wrong" if they're both official works? Trying to sift through interpretations of every character like this is going to just give you a headache. Same shit with the autistic Aya wings argument

Not all of them, but Tengu in particular are commonly described changing their forms.

Of course, this won't stop us from arguing whether ZUN's Tengu have retained this property, but it is good to know it for when we run out of arguments.

It also really is stupid to argue about the varying appearances of characters whose racial traits include shape-shifting. Forbidden Scrollery, which is... er, was one of the more tightly controlled Touhou print works, even showcased Aya changing her outward appearance under consistently changing circumstances. Wings when in "Tengu uniform," no wings when snooping among humans. It makes sense she'd want to avoid drawing attention in the latter case - ergo, the wings have to go.

Now, if we were talking about Sekibanki's absence or presence of a neck... There is a more befuddling case.

I'm just gonna take the time to say that Momiji's power of telegnosis is described as allowing her to see "a thousand ri" ahead. Since a ri is 2.44 miles, this means Momiji can see up to 2,440 miles ahead of her. This in turn means that if she were on the outside, she could actually see through the windows on the ISS, as well as clearly see any satellite orbiting up to the first thousand miles or so of medium earth orbit!
