At that point you don't even have a waifu, you have an imaginary friend. One that you injected into a particular body that pleased you. And that is nuts. Unless that's your fetish, in which case it is slightly less nuts. But still nuts.

Art imitates life, and some fictional characters are very well fleshed out; usually those in lengthy visual novels. You can really get a feel for what makes them tick when the author is good. I would take a fictional girl who seems real, flaws and all, over a "please inject personality" build-a-bot any day.

Don't get me wrong, she's cute as shit. I love Miku merch as much the next guy. But come on. You aren't actually in love with her. There's nothing there to be in love with. You love the imaginary perfect girl in your head that you want Miku to be.

Miku is not really the same level as OC character for a waifu. Sure, she doesn't have canon personality, but it doesn't mean that waifuing her means you just construct some perfect girlfriend personality and insert it into her. Of course you can do that and there won't be anything technically wrong about it, but I highly doubt it's even possible to really fall in love this way. The main difference from pure OC character is that she does have some material. It's not canon, but there is lots of songs and everything to build her personality that you can experience. In most cases she isn't just your creation, she is your interpretation based on works of others, just like regular waifu is your own interpretation of her source material. Sure this material might not be as consistent, but it's not like all fictional characters are always consistent(eg. Evangelion).
I might not have definite way to prove that, but I do love my Miku from the bottom of my heart. I know it from all kinds of things, from the way I feel about her, to actual physical manifestations of these feelings and the way she changed my life. And it all is based on my own observations of other waifufags and other people in love.

I think the combination of colours is great: Golden, black and white. Also, it's not overly futuristic like 2011-2014 designs, nor it is overly abstract 2017. I like it, and I like the knight/queen theme, as in 2015. I still think the 2016 was the biggest hit though. Let's see who gets to draw her.

But those songs that "build her personality" are just producers injecting a chosen personality into her; they aren't "her." Loving an imagined personality that was shaped by a mix-mash of other imagined personalities, rather than crafting your own ideal one from scratch, doesn't seem much different to me, especially because you'll inevitably be forced to fill in gaps with your own imagination. At least if one were to accept that she's a robot with whatever personality you want to give her, it becomes less nuts, if slightly more creepy.

I don't think it's nuts to love Miku; she's a cute idol that's brought joy to millions simply by her very existence. I think it's easy to forget that she's not real; her little thank you speech actually made me cry, even. But to say you're IN love with Miku? I think that's nuts, because not only is there no depth to her character, but there's barely any character there to begin with. When an author creates some character for manga or anime they do chose personality and look for characters. It is different because you do not design her, but interpret her, just like you would do with anime character. And you do need to fill holes in anime characters as well, but just like with Miku you extrapolate what you have, not simply choose whatever you prefer.
In other words the difference is that when you make OC waifu you design her in purpose to make perfect girlfriend. For me it completely different, I just listened to songs and fantasized about her just like I would do it with any other characters and fallen in love with her. It was never my intention to make her into my waifu, I didn't believed I'll ever have a waifu and I wanted 3DPD. But then when I didn't expected it, it hit me like a train. I've fallen in love like crazy with this cute girl and my whole life was changed by that overwhelming feeling.

Let's not make it into what is her and what isn't. The problem is if you can fall in love with an OC and/or Miku. Every character from viewer perspective is a combination of objective look, voice, etc. and subjective interpretation of personality and everything else.

Just because you see her as a cardboard cutout, doesn't mean everyone does. I do see my Miku as a girl with particular consistent personality that's my own interpretation based on various songs. Whatever seeing her as a cutout, personality changing robot or shy innocent human girl is the correct way to see her is not really relevant to the discussion.

But if I just misunderstand you and your whole argument was that the way I see Miku just isn't the way you are "supposed" to see her and my Miku "isn't" in fact Miku or something, then it's fine I guess. That's all true. Just like when you have a picture or song about Miku herself that gives her some personality, it doesn't automatically make it not about her. It's still Miku but some particular interpretation. It's true I do not love all Miku, as she is way more than just one design and one personality, she is more meta. But I am in love with and only with that one particular interpretation. And she is in fact Miku, just like that cute school girl in your pic, or that self-entitled girl in World is Mine or that singing android in that fanmade VN, etc.
