I don't care if she's a youkai.

Meiling was originally a human martial artist who died in battle. However her thirst for fighting kept her alive.

She looked for fights wherever she visited, rumors of an undying martial artist who stalked the land taking hold. She became like any other youkai, becoming a magnet for imaginary or conceptual thoughts and things, giving them form as a youkai.

Ironically, as the modern world lost touch with its roots and moved forward, this kept Meiling alive. While in Europe, she was molded over the years by a westernized view of China, taking on aspects of the eastern dragon, and becoming a very stereotypical, romanticized image of an oriental martial artist, as the ancient practitioners passed into fantasy and became more myth than fact.

She continued to look for more to fight, until coming across Remilia. She was bested for the first time in hundreds of years. This gave her peace and she resigned herself to being put to rest, but instead of being killed, Remilia took her in and over time, revealed to her their plan to go to Gensokyo, where Meiling might find others like her.
