Get a
-box, preferably not cardboard
-buttons
-control board, since you seem clueless get one of those zero delay boards from ebay
-wires, you need 4.8mm terminals for microswitches and 6.3 for lights. If you don't mind crimping the terminals on the wires by yourself the wires will be real cheap.

Drill holes in box, put buttons in holes, put wires from buttons to control board, plug board to computer, and viola! You have pop'n controller.
Seriously, it's the easiest controller to build because no knobs/turntables/vibration sensors.

Play some easy songs and focus on timing by audio while ignoring the note position. Then just use whichever of the two 'modes' that feels more in sync with the music.

To add, if you get a 4:3 CRT TV with Component Video around 19"-24", it should be sufficient to play the CS games and most PS2-gen and below consoles. Makes the CS games pop and look way less muddy than standard Composite Video signals.

Some people even play on professional-grade CRT Monitors (e.g. Sony PVM/BVM) that have RGB Video (highest quality signal for 240p/480i video content), but these are getting more scarce and the prices are being overblown.

The latter styles (Happy Sky-Empress) had a timing adjustment option, if you wanted to play those on an HDTV/HD monitor. Older styles unfortunately will have laggy display timing unless you use an external video scaler like the OSSC, but it's not widely available yet and very expensive.

tl;dr find a 19"-24" CRT with Component Video input to play the PS2 CS games, it'll suit 98% of your needs

As a followup and personal example, I started focusing on getting Clear/FC Lamps for every single SP chart, as best as I could do them. Every single one, even Normal charts. The game has been a lot more fun since that transition, and when I go back to aiming to beat scores I'll be less personally invested and more fun about it.

Two private "arcades" I know of in WA (extending definition of arcade to those who own more than one cab):
- House of certain famous Tetris Players (nicknamed "TGM HQ")
- Mother Russia (fighting game/candy cabs, has meetups on monthly basis)


The rest usually own just one cab, for mainly private use. For music games specifically, it's mostly going to be DDR or ITG (nothing for beatmania/IIDX...yet).

One person was talking about acquiring a jubeat cabinet, and another one had ordered a pop'n music cab IIRC? Most owners are part of PNW Music Game groups which you can find on FB relatively easily, they're friendly once you get to chat with them.

I imagine because he'd be afraid of me breaking it? Shame, that Extreme cab has been travelling from arcade to arcade for years without ever having any kind of maintenance. My father used to play on it when I was a young lad, but back then the arrows were responsive. And not too long ago I remember the left arrow working just fine, now it's hyper sensitive and if you stomp on it hard it gets stuck, which made play on my tiptoes to avoid stomping on it. And they also changed the price of 2 tokens to the default 4, reeeeeeee.

The next closest DDR machine is legit SuperNOVA, but it's an hour drive. It does work fine tho...........
There's also a D&B opening up soon where I live, hopefully they get some kind of rhythm game, but I'm not holding my breathe.

Infrequent Virgoo Fever update for the people who care about it:

Not much to report. The crowdfunding in China has been a smash success, they will be preparing for sales overseas shortly, but at this point all of the stretchgoals have become nonsense. There was a carrying bag goal reached which was pretty cool, but after that they just recently passed a goal for a sticker for your PS4 and a postcard. It feels like they're just making shit up. Which leads me to the actual update, I shit you not they're adding in support for a "Karting" mode that will simulate a steering wheel so you can play racing games. I don't fucking know why they're using Bloodborne to advertise this feature. I tried to see if there's some bootleg knockoff kart racer in China featuring Bloodborne but I've got nothing. Supposedly they will be making a video to demonstrate this feature, I won't update with that though. Well if you wanted to play a racing game on a turntable, your time is now.

Sorry for the stupid update, I thought some might find it amusing. The takeaway though is that western sales should be starting relatively soon.

I've registered a Nesica card with Magician's Dead. Mine and a friend's, actually.

You need to do play a game at an arcade using the card without having done any online registration first. (This is similar to eamuse with Konami games - you can't register a card online without having played something with it first.) Then you select the date that you played that game with that card (and depending on what time zone you're in, you might have to adjust a day for DST and wait a day for it to show up in the menu). Why is Konami so fucking bad at song ratings? Why do they always make limitations like 10 or 20 feet songs for DDR, as an example, only to be outstripped when players eventually come to the point they're actually able to beat them?

I recently got a SDVX controller. It seems like all songs up to 14's are -mostly- about learning density reading, you won't have to do too much in the way of learning how to do complex laser patterns or freehand very much if you're an experienced rhythm game player(which I am). Come 15's and you have to learn a fucking shitload of techniques all at once. Copious freehanding and lasers that are all over the fucking place constantly. Seriously, 15's belong in 3 different ratings by itself. They pretty much go anywhere from "a bit harder than 14's" to "...what the fuck am I looking at and how do I translate it to the controller?" Does Konami just not give a fuck about ratings or are they extremely incompetent?

Did anything change between them somehow? I don't actually play the real game much, I mostly play charts ported to K-Shoot on that. But I'm mostly referring to Gravity Wars charts, so... new, I guess?

New scale, introduced in heavenly haven, splits difficulty levels 14-16 to 14-20. So it kinda relieves some of the problems, splitting 15s to 16-18 or something,but it still has some problems with the ratings.

I personally find Osu fans to be rather ignorant of the genre at large. They also tend to have a giant chip on their shoulder about liking the game and looking to get into arguments with anyone who disagrees. I avoid talking about the game with them because I don't particularly like it and arguing the matter just fuels the persecution complex.

Deciding which is worse from Osu fans or Bemani fans on the basis of Twitter posts and the like would require me to spend my time reading that content, which I won't do.

They fixed SDVX in HH, but yes they are incompetent, which is why we still use the 1-12 scale in IIDX despite it being outdated even back when they first implemented it in Happy Sky.

There's 3 main problems :
1 - The game and it's ranking is too important for them.
2 - They don't want to accept the game's flaws, especially when it comes to piracy
3 - Most of them aren't rhythm games fans, but osu fans.
