They're fine. Anything I don't like about them I dislike about other otaku as well. I know stylistically and narratively, some of the first yuri and crossdressing chars/themes were featured in shoujo manga so I think these places include them because it's "female-oriented." I think you can fairly easily tell what demographic the work is geared towards from the art-style.

That's great to hear. I have a little trouble finding a lot of yuri stuff that's translated so that's a bummer. I don't know which artists are female/male, but some of them I can guess/tell from the style and writing. I'm glad it's bigger in Japan, but here in the US it feels like yuri isn't all that popular, least of all among fujo/female fans.

Tangentially related is lolicon material. It's everywhere and pretty normalized content in Japan (I don't know how people actually feel towards lolicon), but here in the US everyone only enjoys it in secret or "ironically." In terms of their art, it's somewhat lacking, even when compared to otaku works. If 90% of otaku stuff is pretty shitty, I'd say 98% of fujoshi stuff is.
But Atashi no Alice is flat-out phenomenal, and most of Sumica's other books and games are worth checking out if you like /ss/.
