I was at Otakuthon in Montreal and saw IA live. desu I'm not familiar with very many IA songs and compared to seeing Miku in New York and Toronto the show wasn't as spectacular or exciting, but it was a Vocaloid concert.

Actually, the opposite. I think KEI thought of drawing Miku like a cool type of singer, like Luka, but he regretted that and draw Miku like a cute, pop idol singer instead.

In fact, wasn't Luka supposed to be Miku until they had to delay it and then launched Miku instead to not be late to the VOCALOID scene? I recall hearing something like this.

Well if you're talking about stuff like still being able to hear that weird reverb and "tinniness", I don't think that was the major point in why others consider it "realistic". It's moreso the little nuances in the voice like vibrato/warbling, shouting/projection, and vocal fry to give off a more realistic "personality" behind the voice.

If you're implying that the out-of-a-tin-can effect kills it for you regardless of the other stuff I mentioned, then you'll just have to look harder. It's something that seems harder in general to deal with for UTAU, but you can find some really good stuff out there.
