About a year and a half ago, I put together this Touhou torrent: https://nyaa.si/view/788435. You can read the details there, but in short, it's a pack consisting of all the official games, vpatch, thcrap, netplay utilities, and a PC98 emulator. The idea is that it's everything you need to properly play, with minimal setup, all neatly wrapped up so it can be downloaded with one click.

With the releases of Tenkuushou and Hyouibana just around the corner, I'll soon be posting an updated version, and this is where I'd like your input. Aside from adding the new games, what else could be improved? Is there anything missing that you would consider an essential for playing Touhou, or anything that could be changed to work better?

There are a couple things I've already considered, but can't decide on:
- Should the PC98 emulator be changed from Anex86? It works passably, and is easy to use, but apparently it's not the best for Touhou. I don't know enough about PC98 emulation to really pick a side, though.
- Should the remastered BGM files for Koumakyou be included? Like vpatch, they make the game more "like it was meant to be played", except they don't actually affect gameplay so they can't really be considered essential. But, they would only be an extra ~300MB on a torrent that will already be ~9GB.
>>
>>17400723
1. Dunno
2. Absolutely
3. 9gb isn't that big in the current year. Don't sweat it.
>>
>>17400714
Thank you anon.
>>
>>17400714
Hah, I already did that last year, but they are on my USB drive.
>>
This is just me, but I very much like the retexture patch and visible hitbox patch for EoSD and feel as though they should be included with the torrent: not patched into the game by default, but included, so if the user wants to use them they have easy access. Of course, this contradicts the philosophy of

>The idea is that it's everything you need to properly play, with minimal setup

but I'm just throwing it out there.

I also think copies of the DX8 to DX9 converter should be included, but again not patched in by default, for the utility of Windows 10 users.
>>
>>17400870
Can someone explain the point of retexture patch to me? It's the same thing both ways.
>>
>>17400714
Good work anon.
>>
>>17400723
Neko Project II is considered to be the best PC-98 emulator these days, T98-Next is good too. Anex86 is an inaccurate garbage, but it runs on toasters.
>>
>>17400872
It just makes the game look a little nicer, that's all.

>visible hitbox patch
Not to open a big can of worms here, but I'd consider that an actual cheat, since it alters the gameplay to give you an advantage that was never intended. Similarly, I wouldn't include any scorefiles or unlocker patches (aside from the online-only unlocking that's built into Adonis).
>retexture patch
And that's just unnecessary. I'm only considering the remastered BGM because the originals are demonstrably fucked up (as in, mastered on the wrong synthesizer, not how they're meant to sound at all), but I don't want to start piling on third-party patches to "improve" TH06.
>DX8 to DX9 converter
Excellent point, that's definitely going in.
>>17400897
>>17400932
Neko it is, then.

Thanks for the suggestions.
>>
>>17400714
As someone who actually got into touhou from the megapack, I have some legit decent answers. Vpatch being in each games folder already/an explanation of what vpatch is and does in your face somehow would be great. anex is fine as all the emulators take time and knowledge to set up but including next/neko wouldnt be a bad idea for options. Don't worry about file size I was able to get it with the shitternet I had at the time.
>>
>>17400714
as you uploaded your torrent to that site, I hope you threw a bone to your neighbors on /g/ and uploaded on their site as well, as a form of redundancy.
>>
>>17402356
This.
Don't get mad if they get nuked OP. We went through the trouble of making a new torrenting site, you may as well use it.
>>
>>17400870
This is just me, but I very much like the marijuana leaf patch, the troll translation and the alphes patch and feel as though they should be included with the torrent: not patched into the game by default, but included, so if the user wants to use them they have easy access.
>>
>>17400714
I have some suggestions as well as files I can provide for the updated torrent but I won't be around/able to respond for about a week. Could you send me an email? [email protected]

There were some issues with the files for a couple of the games I wanted to have fixed for others. I don't remember which ones off the top of my head, but a few of the games were missing manuals and some did not have the files that came with the disc. IIRC one of the releases you had in there was a 3rd party hacked executable for better compatibility support.

This guide recommends a specific setup of fmgen's np2

>>
>>17403890
Here's the preconfigured emulation files for the lazy ones: https://files.catbox.moe/yg75fz.7z
I also included the LLS disk image patched as described in the guide.
>>
>>17400714
You should include each games prologue as a txt in each game's folder
>>
Well the old touhou key remapper is essential to me at least, because I have a useless key in between my focus key and fire/bomb which makes it awful to play and I don't think there was a way to change keyboard keys in the game itself.
That's what I thought when I saw this thread so just putting that out there

I feel like being spoonfed tonight. Are English and Japanese versions of each game separate in this torrent?
>>
>>17404227
Nah, Finnish. But looking on google brazil seems to have the same layout around that area.
>>
>>17400714
You should include the printed works, cds and ost as well. They are a pain to download one by one. Having the entire official material in one torrent would be nice.
>>
Will you wait until Th16 or 15.5 to update the torrent? 15.5 will most likely come out at winter comiket.

>>
>>17401541
Vpatch is already included for 6,7,8,9, and 10, and there's a full explanation in the readme, so I don't know what else could be done.
>>17402571
>>17404151
The versions currently included are just the most readily-available ones that were already kicking around the web. Having proper CD rips with all the original files would be awesome, if they're available.
>>17404191
This one? https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=219.0
Sounds good.
>>17404143
>>17403890
As long as the English version of TH04 can also be patched with those files, that will be excellent. Thanks for putting it together!
>>17404682
How do you mean? There are both versions of every game that has a hard patch (so not 14, 14.3, or 15), but both versions of each are in the same folder so they can share resources.
>>17404789
Maybe as a separate thing, but that would also be an enormous amount of work to do properly.
>>17404801
I didn't realize it was that delayed, since I don't really care about the fighters, but in that case, might as well wait until they're both out. It's not like 16 will be hard to find for the next six months.
>>
>>17404934
>How do you mean? There are both versions of every game that has a hard patch (so not 14, 14.3, or 15), but both versions of each are in the same folder so they can share resources.
Okay, I tried downloading it, and it looks like it's that pile of pre-patched .zip files I avoided on purpose. How are Japanese and English versions separated? I remember I couldn't figure it out and dug up a different torrent of original .iso files and patches up to th12 just a week before Nyaa meltdown.

What's hard to figure out? The English version has a 'e' suffix, the original doesn't. If the patched versions bother you that much, you can just delete everything with an 'e'. Or you can put them in a separate directory, and copy over all the other files to make two entirely separate versions.
One thing I'll grant you, the TH06 folder is a bit of a mess, partly because the executables were renamed to work with vpatch out of the box. But aside from that, it should all be pretty straightforward.
>>
>>17405048
EoSD was why I dropped it, since the English version had the normal Japanese name, and I think they both had an issue with windowed mode.

At least now I'm sure we're talking about the same torrent.
>>
>>17405062
That original is named "102h.exe", which is the game's version; it came like that. The English patch is named "東方紅魔郷.exe", which is required for vpatch to be able to find it. As for an issue with windowed mode, yeah, TH06 has all sorts of issues on newer versions of Windows.
For the next version, I'll rename the original and add some extra notes on TH06 to the readme. Not much I can do about the actual functionality of the programs, though.
>>
>>17404934
I can supply CD rips sometime next week when I'm available.
>>
>>17400723
Where can one find a comparison between the original and "remastered" tracks? I've only ever heard one version.
>>

Since TH06 stores the music as naked WAV files, they're easy to swap out, so you can just re-encode that guy's FLAC masters and pop them in.
>>
>>17406089
This is just the midi music ran through a synthesizer. This has nothing on the wav files.
>>
>>17406089
This isn't a remaster. This is just the recordings of the game's midis played through the synth they were written for.
>>
Alright, the current checklist looks like this:
- Change PC98 emulator from Anex86 to Neko Project II, pre-configured to run Touhou well
-> Also include pre-patched TH04
- Include the DX8 to DX9 converter as a separate ZIP
- Replace as many files as possible with original CD rips
- Include the key remapper as a separate ZIP
- Clean up the TH06 folder and update its readme section
- Include re^H^Hdifferently-mastered TH06 soundtrack as a separate ZIP
- Add links to a few more resources in the readme

Anything else? If not, the thread will die quietly, but rest assured I'll be working on it, so look forward to it whenever Hyouibana finally comes out.
>>
>>17411265
Include editdisk english in the pack.
>>
>>17400723
Keep Anex86 for low end machines and Neko Project for modern ones.
>>
Thank you anon. My internet is slow, but I'll try to seed
>>
>>17402356
pantsu scrapes si anyway
>>
>>17411348
Sure, why not? It's practically microscopic, I'll just toss it in the PC98 ZIP.
>>17411579
Is Neko really that much more resource-intensive than Anex, or do people blow it out of proportion? I'm worried that including two emulators might lead to confusion, so if only the toastiest 1% of toasters need Anex, I'm just going to drop it.
>>
you can put extras, like ZUN's music collection, OST, etc
Just make sure it's FLAC

You misunderstood this.
The EoSD MIDIs on the SC-88Pro (what you linked to) is the ORIGINAL version of the soundtrack.

The WAV tracks are arrangements of these.
