I've been into Touhou since 2008 and I honestly have no fucking idea who or what Cookie is beyond having something to do with niconico.

Just like everyone else here, I don't a whole lot about it. What I do know is pretty much what's written on KYM. Began as a Touhou fan collaboration video that was so hilariously awful people loved it (and mocked it). Eventually it grew into this spinoff fan-franchise with off-brand Touhou characters, where the viewers obsess over the girls who do the voices, as if they were idols.

The fandom seems pretty much impenetrable unless you understand Japanese and spend tons of time on niconico. I've seen the original video that started it all with subs on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq5GRMsHhQc), and tons of Cookie remixes on niconico. As a meme, it's pretty damn long-lived.

It's been a year I think?
Someone tried selling LINE stickers with the cookie characters (pic related), if only for a short while before getting shut down.
Soon after, ZUN announces the launch of official LINE themes and stickers for Touhou Project on his twitter.
I don't really recall the sources but ZUN did state that he "released the official stickers because someone else was selling Touhou-like stickers on his own"
Anyway the gist is that had there been no cookie, there would be no Touhou LINE stickers.

for anyone who still doesn't know after all the bullshit that happened after the original cookie people made their own fanmade voice dramas and tried to have it the same quality as the original cookie , and the characters personalities aren't based of their touhou counterparts , its based of their voice actors and their names are shortened versions of their voice actors names, for example reisen from the 2013 chrismas voice drama was voiced by hisui , so she's called HSI not reisen
and reimu was voiced by sanana so she's called SNNN.

So "Cookie " is not the original name of anything. It's the nickname people on Niconico gave the original "Marisa and Alice's cookie kiss" fan collaboration video. Eventually, people also started using the "Cookie " name and tag to refer to parodies of the original video mentioned above.

Due to the bad voice acting, strange pronunciations, campy story, and artwork of wildly differing styles and quality from all the collaborating artists, it was considered humor gold. Cookie parodies are almost exclusively music videos created with sound and voice samples from the original video, arranged together with sprites cut out from it (these kind of arrangement are called MADs on Niconico). They are kind of like Niconico's answer to those fan-made TF2 videos that have been all over Youtube the last decade, using sprites instead gmod. So the answer is naturally no, the voice actresses are not involved in these parodies, the parodies are often of mocking them after all.

I don't understand all the actress hubbub either, but that's how obsession works in most of these communities, I guess. Since girls are close to non-existent in the autistic Touhou fandom, the voice actresses soon became idols of worship for some, despite all the mockery. Eventually, instead of referring to the characters in the video by their actual names in the Touhou Project, these worshipers started referring to them as their voice actresses instead. As most Japanese still live in an age where internet privacy is a thing, they are only referred to by acronyms of their online names. UDK is the actor for Marisa in the original video, RU is the actor for Reimu, and so on.

Now, there are "kind of" sequels to the original Marisa and Alice's cookie kiss video. UDK and RU chose to go on and record a few Touhou voice dramas, which fans later chose to call season 2, or "Cookie ". Of course, it didn't take long before some fan made animations in MMD to go along with these, and now there was even more material to keep the memes going (as I said though, 90% of the parody material to this day still comes from the first video).

UDK and RU eventually disappeared, but other voice actresses, artists, and writers continued making Touhou fan collaborations in the same spirit as the original Marisa and Alice's cookie kiss video. Many of them have come and gone by now (after all, it has been 7 years since the first video) over the different "seasons". Therefore, the same Touhou characters are referred to by different names in the different "seasons", as the actors change.

So to conclude, "Cookie" is loosely referring to these kind of Touhou fan collaborations since 2010, the obsessive fandom that goes along with them (where characters are referred to as off-brand versions using their actresses' acronyms), and all the parodies/memes.

Actually, cookiefags love finding and publishing real life info about the actresses. The acronyms are a reference to calling Kazuhito Tadano "TDN" when it was found that he played in gay porn. Other Inmu actors were nicknamed like this too.

Once again, the majority of the most popular sprites come from the first Cookie video. Some come from the "sequels", while others (such as the animated Marisa with legs) are modifications of the original sprites for the sole purpose of making parodies. I just wanted confirmation I'm understanding this. It's kind of confusing that there's:

Cookie: The parodies of some yurishit video
and
Cookie: A bunch of touhou fanart of actresses of the original work, but not related to the parodies, and with memes that point them out relating to the actresses instead that you'd neither gather from their touhou character, nor the original video, nor any of the parodies of it.

It's like with those gay videos, when you're referencing something, you're referring to something that happened in the video. You can just post a scene from it. When you post art of the cookie characters, you're not even talking about the original video, you're talking about something you'd have to be following the actress on twitter from the last 5 years to get. And if you haven't it's just a picture of Reimu, but then someone's like "no that's not Reimu, that's Cookie character RMX" and so you can look up Cookie and all you see is what is supposed to be actual Reimu, and then you look up the parodies, and it's just parodies of Reimu from that video. It's like "who the fuck is this chick that look like Reimu but somehow isn't her then?"

Is there like some annotated versions of the videos that put the names of the people voicing over the characters? I feel like I could just watch all the parodies and I still wouldn't understand who the cookie characters are because they don't actually exist within the context of the videos.

If you seriously want to thoroughly understand this phenomena known as "Cookie", you'll simply have to lurk more on your own. I'm not aware of any annotated videos explaining all the idol drama, so you'll most likely have learn Japanese and watch it all from the beginning on Niconico.

I'm only familiar with one thing from the idol/actress-drama (it's mentioned in the Reddit wiki posted earlier in this thread). RU accidentally blurted out UDKs real name during a stream they did (her real name is Marina) which caused UDK to lose her shit and start screaming.

References to stuff like the incident above are sometimes thrown into the Cookie parodies. But it's not like there's a super clear-cut distinction made between different sorts of parodies. Some are just remixes of the background song in the first, original video. Others are MADs or random stories referencing nothing in particular, who simply use sprites and samples from the first video to mock it. There's also the videos that rely entirely on making fun of the actress drama. It's not rare that parodies throw in a little bit of everything mentioned above. If you dig deeper, there's even non-parody, animated fanfics.

I watch the MAD parodies since they can be enjoyed far what they are after seeing the first original, with little to no knowledge of the actress drama. I don't care for all the off-brand Reimus who aren't Reimu because they are actually the online personas of voice actresses I've never heard of, and that stuff.
