Someone told me that you are expected to loiter around and drink whatever you buy in the vicinity of the vending machine.
They are afraid that you might litter with the empty can so you get harassed by cops if you leave and walk around with it.
Is this true?

Cheaper to rent out the space, easy maintenance, and don't have to worry about vandalism as much. Also helps that majority of Japan walk/bike/take subs to places.

No reason to go all out on vending machines in like America or something when a lot of people drive from place to place.

Which is a shame. I'd love to have a heated beverage vending machine even if I live in a area where Winter almost never comes, but no way anyone would invest in something that stupid down here.

There are basically four types.

First type: no verification. Usually in hotels and other not so public places and, by law, all cigarette machines should have some form of age verification on them.

Second type: camera verification. You can see this on the alcohol machine to the far right. There is a call button which will connect to some operator who looks at you through the camera and decides if they will allow you to buy.

Third type: Taspo verification. You purchase a Taspo card and use it to verify that you are legally allowed to buy alcohol and cigarettes (most cigarette machines are this).

Fourth type: Drivers Licence verification. If you have a Japanese drivers licence you can use it for verification. Sometimes on cigarette machines but relatively uncommon.
>>
>>17340317
Very interesting to know TY
>>
>>17339038
Pretty much.
Bins are not that common in Japan. They're usually around vending machines and convenience stores, but they generally have the opinion that bins result in people littering near bins, so by having fewer bins the litter is reduced.

>>17339181
Walking while eating/drinking is a mixed bag. I have seen Japanese doing it, but it could depend on where you are or how many people are around you.

Obviously in summer I'm not going to stop walking just to drink some water. That would be stupid. But I also don't go around eating while walking, unless I am at a festival, but then everyone is.

Basically, it isn't really clear cut.

I have a question, unlike American vending machines where you can see how much of a drink there is just through the display glass, do Japanese vending machines keep all of their drinks hidden within the machine?

Are the one's in the display window ever sold?
>>
>>17340353
Ah, I noticed the machine on the far right has both camera and drivers licence verification.
The grey box is the drivers licence verification and the shitty box below it is to call for camera check.
>>
>>17340337
Vending machines go by every store. Even porn stores.
I've actually bought from the one on the right, it's cheaper than the Matsumoto KiYoshi the cameraman is standing in front of.
>>
>>17340360
I don't think I have ever seen a machine in Japan with the actual product visible. What you see in the front isn't even a bottle or an empty bottle or can, it's just a mockup.
>>
>>17340368
I'm surprised they don't like viewing the mechanics the machine has.
That's probably the only good part about American vending machines.
>>
>>17340360
American drink vending machines haven't done that in FOREVER, like, since when soda came in glass bottles.

Japanese machines are stocked internally in the same way, usually using fake half-bottles up front. You can see it in the porn store picture, the Pepsi "cans" displayed in the machine on the left are white plastic.
>>
>>17340380
I've seen some modern examples where you can see the mechanics within the vending machine select the food.
Then you have one's with the twisting mechanic which pushes out food with a long black curled bar.

You can always tell how much quantity is left in those kinds
>>
>>17340385
Ahh, it might be regional? Now that I think of it, I have seen those in the southeast, but not really anywhere else. Northeast is all the solid fridges, with old machines having the stack of small buttons on the right and newer machines having the really big buttons directly on the front.

Japanese machines don't display quantity, but they usually do display an in stock/out of stock/sometimes both light next to every item. It's why you can see big rows of green lights on some pics and scattered orange or red lights on others.
>>
>>17340376
Probably part of the reason their vending machines almost never break down.
>>
>>
>>17340380
I live in CA and we have plenty of machines where you can see the actual stock although it's less common to find them in public compared to college/office cafeterias

Also, Thailand police are a joke so good luck trying to get help if you get mugged unless you look important looking.

How often to they refill the vending machines? Must be quite an effort refilling them considering how many there are.

Also does anyone know if some machines gives you a "bonus drink" if you buy a certain amount? I remember when I bought 7drinks from one I think and then it started to display 777 in the number display and I got a free drink.

Yeah, well it's not like that's any different from any country in the world even when cigarettes are not able to be purchased from vending machines.

>Also does anyone know if some machines gives you a "bonus drink" if you buy a certain amount?
It's not the amount you buy, it's just random. Every time you buy a drink it generates a number (always three the same and then chance if the fourth number is the same or one off).

When I was in Fukushima the first time I went to one of those machines that had bonus chance to win a drink spat me out another one.
But never again.

Big problem is that they don't use it much during their education or afterward.
I've had some junior high school students who really liked English and had quite good English, for only a couple of years of education in English grammar, but for the majority of them it's just another subject like any other subject they don't give a shit about. For everyone complaining: western drink vending machines are the way they are because it's easier to replace a piece of paper in front of a button than to replace a bunch of empty cans and bottles.

Also western drink machines double as big heavy billboards, so having half the face of the machine get taken up with a drink display means less ad space.
>>
>>17358190
>than to replace a bunch of empty cans and bottles.
For a moment I wasn't sure what you were talking about, then I realized you were under the misconception that there are actually empty bottles and cans in the front of Japanese vending machines.

But then it isn't like they change out the varieties very often.

I'm pretty sure it's a regional thing. I live in the midwest and that kind is all I've ever see; that is, a glass panel that lets you know how much is left of everything.

Around here, vending machines overall are really rare. But you can consistently find them in college campuses, or at some odd public locations like the YMCA, or interstate rest stops. Other than those places though they are very very hard to find, in fact I think I've never even seen one ever at anywhere other than those places.
>>
>>17360218
I live in a more densely populated area, the snack vending machines are completely glass-front here as well.
However, the drink machines are split between the ones where you can't see the products, and ones where you can with some bizarre mechanism that fetches them from their rack.
The latter seems excessive, but whatever.
>>
>>17350870
As a drug otaku I must say, I could not get addicted to tobacco, or any nicotine substance, no matter how much I smoked or used.
I would pick it up for a couple months, go a little hard just because, then just not feel like it any more.

Very anxiogenic both on dose and off. Both comforting and discomforting in differing ways. Calming in action, but adds an edge to everything.
Quite polarizing.

I cannot recommend any of it, really. Especially if you want it for ingroup aspects like becoming a 'true otaku' or 'cool kid', rather than any psychological effects.

What about cigars? And I mean real prime cigars from a parlor and some cheap crappy cigarillos from mexican gas stations.
>>
>>17361741
I've only ever had one.
They certainly taste better. Stronger, less stale. But other than that I didn't notice much to care about.

There's a whole cultural thing to it though. Like wine and coffee. With countless flavors and methods.
Supposedly, you're actually not supposed to inhale cigars. But rather taste them with your mouth and exhale some of the smoke through the nose.
As inhaling them ruins the flavor comparably.

If you're into the social aspect and want to group with other cigar otakus, cigars are a much better choice than other tobacco.
But it's still not a good habit. If you're not inherently interested in the first place, I would not advise pursuing it.

We actually had a cup noodle vending machine at my high school in the US. It looked more like a normal US vending machine than a Japanese one, and you had to get the cup noodle out, take the top off, and then put it back into a compartment where it would automatically dispense the right amount of hot water.

It's weird now that I think about it, I've never seen another one like it in the US, but it also wasn't anything like the Japanese ones. I wonder where they got it.

vending machines that are common
camera (in tourist places)
drink (everywhere)
ice cream (not too common)

ticket (for food, and in 7/11 for events)

Australian here. Glad to see vending machine's are still thriving in Japan. We still have allot of them around where I live, they are becoming less common though. Smoke vending machines are incredibly rare and only found in bars or clubs. We would most likely never be aloud to have beer vending machines, though I guess our smoking & drinking laws would be strickter than Japans.
>>
>>17343001
IIRC tobacco selling machines needed a special IC card you can only get if you provide ID.
Maybe they also use that for alcohol.
>>
>>17340235
That actually looks like the setups you'd find in Taiwan.

Taiwan has more vending machines than most places, and in some weird places, and with Taiwanese and Japanese brands (owned by Hey Song?), but there is still less than Japan. I'd also find machines that dispensed daily made tea and bubble tea, daily made cakes, arts and crafts, model trains, stuffed bears in bottles, and other oddities.

I think its the low crime that allows for such machines.

Does anyone know about Singapore?

Vending contractor where I work changed in January; the new company put in shelves and coolers with a kiosk on one end where you scan and pay, rather than normal vending machines.

A month later they put cameras all over each of the snack stations because people were stealing a ludicrous amount of shit. Didn't work, because the same people waited until there's no one watching, then cover their faces and steal shit.

Recently, they pretty much removed all the stations except for high-traffic areas (from about 10 to 3 total); and they're still having massive theft issues.

Seriously, taking night walks there would be awesome.

Bananas are important.

Heh. Do you want a really profitable business idea?
Listen up. These vending machines, they all sell cold products, like cold beverages or sandwiches. So what do vending machines lack, huh, huh? That's right: warm food. I'm thinking about hot pockets, grilled cheese sandwhiches, pizza slices, noodles... There should be warm food vending machines with those!
>>

see >>17339597
Also >>17340344 the entire bottom row with あたたかい in red are heated drinks. The vast majority of vending machines in Japan, especially if they vend coffiee or tea, will have heated drinks in the winter months.

Basically, your idea is a thing already.

Indeed, imagine what would happen to kids' snack budgets if it weren't for bananas!

Because I'm trying out my tiny tripod. It has magnets so I can stick it on poles and stuff, but there wasn't anything convenient in front of these vending machines.

Did someone say shaky hands?

This was a screencap from a video from last year. Rural as heck Usa, Kyushu. The machines had tons of moths on them.

Vending machines sure are convenient, but they aren't really a reason for missing a country.
I miss Japan for other reasons much more.
