Ranked games are frustrating, but they do get more interesting the higher up you go.
>>

Truthfully, mahjong in the first two rooms isn't even really mahjong. :(
>>
>>17253259
here we go again...
>>
>>17253517
At least for ippan it's really true, though. The sheer number of disconnecting players alone should be enough reason for anyone to want to get out of it. Also most people play so aggressively that many aspects of the game get completely lost like having to judge if calling riichi might make your opponents defend.
Joukyuu is by far the most heterogenous room in terms of players skill. You will have good, interesting matches with 3 decent players as well as garbage games that could also take place in ippan.
>>
>>17253259
80% of my games are in 7447 anyways. Only slightly better though, I guess.
>>
>>17253582
agreed. starting a new account is a pain since your normal measured play gets trashed by morons that deal into windmilling faggots.

by the time you get back to joukyuu you've been infected with bad ippan habbits and have to re-learn everything
>>
>>17253934
>Ippan habits
I'm just breaking into joukyuu but I feel like I was largely unaffected by ippan. Sure people play weird but I don't think ippan should be giving you habits.
>>
>>17254177
here's an example. In ippan you can basically riichi with any crap wait confident that the shitters will deal in. In joukyuu this will backfire

It only backfires in joukyuu because the lobby has a larger amount of people who have been annoyed of dealing in all the time. Sometimes they still fall for silly things. Ex: chiitoitsu + riichi waiting on an honor tile
>>
>>17255333
There is nothing wrong with waiting on an honour tile with riichi + chitoitsu. It's probably the second best for chitoitsu after a suji trap.

So I opened up the other game I got in the package, the one that isn't focused on just school girls. In the options, there's an optional Yakuman called 13 unrelated tiles. I thought this was their head-canon name for a Kokushi.

So I get right into the match, take a look at my tiles, and East to my left goes fucking tsumo. My first game in this fucking game, and the computer gets a tenhou off of a shit as fuck hand.

Okay, guess this was it with tenhou for me. This shit can't not be rigged. The bad luck streak I have right now defies all probability. I just checked that out of the last 20 times I called riichi I dealt into an oikake riichi 11 times and won the hand 3 times. Just as icing on the cake the last time, I dealt into an oikake riichi coming 7 discards after my riichi (which was suji trap) with a red 5 ippatsu + ura dora.

B: 7m
C: Ippatsu chiitoi Dora Dora (ura)

>>17257317
If you regret dealing into a hand because you locked into riichi, it means the gamble you took was an uncalculated risk.
It's fine to be upset when your gambles fail but if you're genuinely this mad, you're doing something wrong. Feel free to ask for help when you're ready.
Git gud famallama.

Also, if 11 out of 20 riichis are getting followed up, my guess is you're in ippan.
>>
>>17257561
Hatsu seems incredibly obvious, that's probably what you dropped and what I would drop. 8p is the other dangerous choice that I'd consider, but feels a bit much for me to risk. Pain is a mangan I'm guessing, enough to knock you into last so you can start S4 from there.
>>
>>17257317
been there friend. I dealt with it in different ways but here's some of the things you can do.

seeing so many of my riichi'd hands get fucked really made me develop an appreciation for dama tenpai. When that free sex button appears you have to fight your raging boner and decide if the wait is good, how much the hand is worth, how risky it seems, and your points relative to other players. if you have a 4han dama, you really dont get much more via riichi unless you get a ton of ura, but you cant rely on ura.

if someone riichi's with a 3sou, im going to avoid that tile's suji and it's ura-suji unless there's evidence that it's safe. so I'll avoid 25sou, 47sou,on the ura suji, and 6 sou in case you laid a trap. if you stay dama you can sneak one in, especially if you're in the lead.

in more general terms, if you feel your luck is shit, get a fuckup account and ride it out. You want to be able to lose, learn, and not tilt.try other mahhjong games.

review your games, look at your decisions and see if it really was the best option. tenhou's tile efficiency calculator is great. Also review what the other players did and see what they did that got them ahead. did they just magically draw their hands or was there some actual play you could learn from?

dont post a replay here until you've reviewed your games and are stumped. you don't need the armchair tenhoui telling you you were a moron for pushing when you should have defended unless you really need to eat the humble pie.

we're all gonna make it brah
>>
>>17257561
This is tricky because the 7m isn't necessarily safe. It depends on whether the 3p was called before or after the riichi.
>>
>>17257391
>>17257632
>>17257917
I have 1922 R, m8s. I think I have a bsaic idea of what is bad luck and what is utterly retarded bullshit outside the realm of normal probability.
>>
>>17257561
A: Depends if 7m was discarded after the riichi. Otherwise 1p. Suji to the dealer, 3 of the 2p are visible and the others are probably after tanyao or are missing the hatsu in your hand.
B: Hatsu
C: Double ron into riichi chitoi and hatsu dora

Sup guys, I'm trying to learn how to play mahjong.

Can anyone explain why this isn't a win?

As far as I understand, you're supposed to call tsumo when you win on your own draw, but it doesn't seem to let me.
>>
>>17261953
You can't have sequences of dragons or winds, for starters

Your hand needs a yaku to win.
>>
>>17261983
Oh, that makes sense Thank you very much.

Though doesn't having 4 regular sets of anything and a pair automatically make a 'no yaku' yaku?
>>
>>17261953
in order to win you need a valid hand consisting of four melds and a pair (with three notable exceptions but lets not get into the minutia) and you also need at least one multiplier (aka "yaku")

your hand's biggest issue is that it isnt legal. dragons and winds cannot be mixed with each other to form a meld so the RGW dragon block doesn't count.

if you had had 3 green dragons instead, your hand would have been legal and the yaku requirement also met.

more on yaku: as you learn to play you'll hit situations where your legal cannot win. memorize yaku to avoid this.

good luck and have fun!
>>

>>
>>17262010
correct. a set of dragons will always give you one yaku, but winds must either match the round or your seat to be considered a yaku. in your image you called the west wind while in the south round and your seat also being south so it had no value.

the only wind that would be ok to call in this particular situation would be the south wind as it would give you two multiplers (round and seat wind)

>>
>>17274808
Well if you are getting 4th almost 30% of the time you are doing a lot wrong.

2.62 as an average placement means you are significantly less than average at your rank you are at, so it makes sense you aren't progressing.

Your stats aren't actually that far off from what I have, but if your placement is that bad then you need to focus on bigger hands. That's a huge deal in rate. If you want to play that way you have to counterbalance it out and punish the other players when you do win.

With a decent number of games under your belt you know the game and need to pick up some strategy, so it's probably about time to read the book.

And I forgot if your goal is getting to Tokujou you need a new account. If you are soft capped you won't be able to hit R1800 without a ridiculous amount of work.

4 dan R1600 hell is ultimate suffering. I know a couple people here made it from 1650ish through sheer stubbornness but even that took more than 100 games at 4 dan (where getting 4th costs 90 pt).

Hey, does anyone know of a good cheat sheet I can print out? My friends wanted to learn how to play but don't know how to read Mongolian Moon Runes. Preferably, the cheat sheet would also have a list of yaku and fu points on it, maybe with an English naming scheme as well, cause I don't think of them as the type that would get full on weeby enough to learn that many Japanese terms. But, having said that, I don't want the EMA one. I'm not fully on board with their scoring sense or insistence on using Chinese terms over Japanese.

Tall order, but can anyone here fill it?
>>
>>17277898
I actually made one for myself when I first started. I still have the printout in my tilebox but I can't find the digital version
There's probably anons with better versions anyway but ask again in a few days if mo one delivers and I'll see what I can do.

What do the blue and red +/- numbers at the end of a match on tenhou mean?
>>
>>17278076
That's the uma (plus minus score). Don't worry about it outside of tournaments and live games.
>>
>>17278104
It only matters in games if you want to win money
>>
>>17278104
That's not what the UMA is.

>>17278076
That's the shorthand they use to tell how much someone has won or lost over a game. I'll skip the long explanation of it and just say that in real life you would multiply those numbers by the rate. The rate is usually determined as X amount of money per 1,000 points decided before the match.

So if matched ended as:
+65
+9
-18
-56
And the rate was say 50 yen, That would mean 4th place would pay out 2800 yen to 1st place, 3rd place would pay out 900 yen, 450 to 2nd, 450 to first, 2nd place would win a total of the 450 yen, and 1st place won a whole 3250 yen.

UMA is something different. Usually it's an additional bonus/penalty for ranking in the game. The usual UMA is 5-10, meaning 3rd would pay 5 units to 2nd, and 4th would pay 10 units to 1st.

Currently translating a guide to cheating when I came across this.

It's quite harsh in that the dice roll has no room for error but if you do pull it off, your opponent's hand is as good as dead. If she tries to act clever and throw the dai san gen, you have all the power in the world to turn your 3 pairs into a very real dai san gen complete with a pao rule attached to punish them. The only way out is to give up on the dai san gen at an early stage and build a faster chiitoitsu.
Do you think you could overcome the greed for a dai san gen? What would be the digital thing to do?

If you want to lose, yes. What keeps your opponent from using his last dragon pair as his pair as well and get a shou sangen? If you know that your opponent cheated what you could do is throwing one pait hoping your opponent calls and keep the two others, though.

when you get a leaver you can be more aggressive and have obvious bad waits that the other two players would never deal into.

only having to worry about two players also changes the dynamic immensely. This might be my imagination but I feel some collusion between the remaining players to punish leavers.

I'm just reading through the Two-Player Mahjong game in Ten, and Ken says that Ten is using "Tse-ii-men discards" to fool Harada.

I've been using my best google-fu but I can't figure out what Tse-ii-men is supposed to be, it doesn't seem to be a yaku. Some google book has the term listed but refers me to "zetsuichimon", which again, doesn't give me any useful hits.

What is Tse-ii-men?
>>
>>17315998
It's when you eliminate a suit from your hand completely.
>>
>>17315998
Tse-ii-men and zetsuichimon are the same thing, 絶一門.
It's like anon said, eliminating one suit from your hand.

Pros:
-Your discards will look kinda like a honitsu/chinitsu.
>souzu souzu souzu souzu manzu shit she's in tenpai for pinzu I'd better fold with my souzu/manzu tiles all the souzu tiles were taken by her so I'll go with dealing this manzu
>BAM
>zetsuichimon
-Even if they don't get fooled by the discards, you do gain the flexibility of playing with single suit waits. The more same suit tiles you hoard, the more likely a multi-sided wait will appear. If everyone folds and your tsumo chances are high, it's your win.

Cons:
-You're losing out on a chinitsu
-The moment you decide to tse-ii-men, your urekire gets sliced up. If it's your iishanten, you could still make it. If you try and start a hand with zetsuichimon, you'll face serious speed issues.

My own take on it, courtesy of wikipedia. Take with a pinch of salt.

Is this What being lucky feels like? Also question to more experienced players. Go for chiitoitsu or 3/4 hidden triplets or let it depend on the next good draw? (Disregarding that I'd win overall either way)
>>
>>17318338
Discard 9p and go for a quick open tanyao. You're in the West round 2.9k points from winning, you need to secure 1st as fast as possible. Chiitoitsu is too slow here.
>>
>>17318338
It's West round so your decisions are very different. You already have a dora so all you need is any winning hand and you lock up first. Go for whatever is fastest, in this case open tanyao.

Would you riichi this or not and why?
>>
>>17331813
Yes, because sanshoku is not guaranteed in this case. If you stay dama, you can't win off of 4m unless you draw it. If you had sanshoku or any other yaku, definitely would stay dama.
>>
So I had a quick question.

What happens to any Riichi sticks left over in the pond if all last ends with East in noten?
>>
>>17332139
I'm assuming you mean for tonpussen because in hanchan they just stay there for S1.

If someone has enough to get to 30k the game ends and no one claims them. If no one is at 30k you go to South 1.
>>
>>17325232
No, not in the slightest. The idea is you are "Reaching" for the last tile. Japanese is filled with this stupid little shit.
>>
>>17332224
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/立直
>>
>>17331813
Calling riichi drops you down to a guaranteed second place if you don't win, while a tsumo from the kamicha or shimocha would end the game with you first if you didn't riichi.

Another thing to consider is that I find it hard to believe anyone would drop the 4m against a riichi from you. The toimen doesn't need to be too aggressive, either, since just keeping tenpai would just win him the game in case of a draw (I think? would he get the riichi stick if there was a draw?).

So no, I wouldn't call it. There are fair chances of the 7m being dropped, letting you ron and win the game without calling riichi.
>>
>>17333416
>Calling riichi drops you down to a guaranteed second place if you don't win

By this I mean if someone else manages to make a winning hand that doesn't involve the toimen dealing in, or a big enough tsumo to drag the toimen down for the 1000 point difference. Say, if the shimocha went for a quick tanyao nomi and got a tsumo, you'd be fucked if you called riichi.

>implying ippan players think very hard about defense
>>
>>17332224
"Reach" is only said because it sounds closer to リーチ than pronouncing "riichi" as English. You dont know Japanese. You dont even know English.
>>
>>17331813
No cause I'd want to make it a bigger hand, but since it's S4 and tied for first then yeah I probably would. If it wasn't so late in the match I'd cut the souths and try for pinfu at least.
>>
>>17331813
Damaten.

Scores are tied, and you are the one in the lead by virtue of seat wind rotation.

If push comes to shove, there's the option of South pon and win the game that way.

Defend yourself.
>>
>>17334640
screw defense. 2m
>>
>>17334707
I love that attitude.
I bet it was the right move too, given the obvious haku defense. someone is on a taki wait for it.
>>
>>17334640
5p?
>>
>>17334825
More like I'm just being too paranoid about shousangen or discarding pinzu too near to dora. Also, I can't think of a reason to drop 8s, besides half-suji. This is why I'm in joukyuu, I bet.
>>
>>17334640
Obviously the haku is the right choice (even though I'm expecting a dora tanki since it was posted), but the 4p should also be safe because the 7p dora just passed and all the 2p are gone so it can't be ryanmen. The 8s looks pretty safe since it's suji to both.
>>
>>17334640
Drop the 2m. Seven turns is a long time and I'm not confident I'll get that lucky. Might as well bet on someone dealing into my cheap hand than risk failing at defending.
>>
>>17334640
Given dealer's dora discard, everyone is attacking. 2m feels like an okay discard. It's one-chance, though some retarded pinfu + chiitoi double-ron gotcha is possible, and toimen is the most likely player to be waiting on it which means still being 3rd by 200 points if it's a mangan hit and less chance of getting ippatsu ronned by shimocha. There is also a lack of options for defense thanks to two calls, so might as well take that chance to cut off the round with a win on a decent wait.

For the full defense option, 4p is the safest discard, and 5p is not so bad to toss afterward. Souzu/dragons look like danger zones for some nonsense honitsu/chinitsu bullshit from shimocha from his discards, even if 8s is suji and there are three haku in hand. At least double ron is not possible with a haku discard.

You're dealer so tanyao, dora 1 is enough since it gives you 2han30fu, which is exactly 2900 pts on ron (1000 all on tsumo).
Like the other guy said, chiitoitsu is too slow so you shouldn't discard 5m for example unless you hit tenpai for chiitoi of course. But you'll want to call as soon as possible.
>>
>>17331813
It's only 2nd turn, you have no yaku unless you win on sanshoku and you just need to win any kind of hand to get 1st. So I always riichi here.

Speaking of Akagi, some of the tracks are missing from the released OST. Did anyone ever bother to stitch them together from the episodes?

>>17361772
I was reflecting on this after the tournament yesterday. Even against tokujou and houou players, I could still top the game purely because of dora. While terribly fun for me, it didn't feel fair for them.
However in the end, I still lost a majority of games and ended up in the negative. Hands amplified by luck mean jack in the long run, luck can only last for so long.

Replays related. Tanyao dora 4 and Tanyao dora 5. Not fun to deal into.
