My problem was that it was 100% strike-zone my kind of porn as well, like the situations themselves, but just something about the actual h-scenes didn't do it. I can't put my finger on what exactly it was and I've never really run into anything like that before. But it's certainly something subjective. I don't think I've heard anyone else think so too. Then again I never paid attention to discussions of the game in general so I don't even know what the common criticisms were.

Seeing Tomoaki getting corrupted with power was definitely one of the best parts. I would love more "bad guy" protags for both bl and otome, even all-ages ones. Though an R18 one with female protag bullying the heroes would be my dream come true. For now I made do with femdom eromanga. And the occasional otome drama CD. (for anyone similar who hasn't already, 誘惑（いいなり） vol 4 is amazing.)

I actually like a lot of the cutesy "good girl" self-insert protags that I've seen people complain of. I mean if I didn't I don't think I could even be into this hobby, they're the usual archetype.
But mostly I haven't seen people complaining of it in a "ew sexism" way (except maybe in regard to dialovers?) but more of a "bored of it" way. But I also don't go anywhere for otome discussions beside here and 2ch, I can only imagine what discussions other communities get up to.

Personally I've always been a bit confused as to what self-insertion actually is. I've never found a game with a protagonist behaving as I actually do in real life, if that's what it is. Even the most bland protagonist will do lots of things that I wouldn't in the same situations. But I like the whole "escape to a world where you're some perfect cute girl surrounded by an ikemen harem" thing. Which I can do regardless of the personality of the protagonist, so one can't be more self-insertable than another for me.

In the end basically as long as the protagonist doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the guys, it doesn't bother me whether she's boring or unique.

I'm with you for feeling bad for the guys. The plot has some sort of comeuppance scenario for the heroines, but it doesn't work when at most the guys are just mean to her. And one of the guys is a hardcore masochist, but even, its pretty eh.

One thing that bugs me with MCs is when the game constantly reminds you that they have the ability to do a certain thing, or constantly hints that they'll actually do something, but they never do.

This happened with Hakuouki. The game really loved to go on about how she knows how to use a sword and defend herself yada yada but she never does and just gives up when she should use those skills.

Also happened a bit with Lamento as well. A lot of Konoe thinking about doing things but little action. Also the song that solves everything wasn't even his.

I mean it's fine if they're not skilled at things, but don't give them the ability to solve a problem and then never do it.

Can vouch that Nightshade is decent. Play Hatoful Boyfriend if you haven't already gotten around to it. Cinderella Phenomenon has good reviews and is free, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Just browse through the otome tag.

Are any Android otome and BL worth picking up? Theres so many popping up left and right but most seem like poorly written, poorly translated garbage loaded with microtransations forcing you to buy every line of text you see.

It's a pain in the ass if you don't want to do some serious time management for mediocre payoff.

The main catch is that the event schedule is in real time so you just have to not miss too many of them. I think the only routes that you need to purchase are Jumin and 707 through Deep Story and the seasonal DLC using premium currency, which they sometimes give you when they update and stuff and also by collecting hearts in the story (although the rate is a paltry 100 hearts to 1 hourglass) so you don't necessarily have to buy anything with real money. You can also pay premium currency for features like skip text, playing missed chats, and reloading saves. It's been a while since I've played but I imagine they haven't made any major changes.

Events are timed, meaning if you miss a 3 a.m event or something you have to use hour glasses (which cost money) to rewind and participate in it.

As others have said, the game is in real time over a ten day period [per route]. Chatrooms (~15-30 minutes of content) come in throughout the day to simulate real-time occurrences (e.g. you have a conversation about what one of the characters cooked for breakfast around 9 AM). They'll also call to simulate phone calls.

You can play the game normally and not put money into it, but keep in mind that you can't just play straight through at once without the premium currency, although the game does give you some. The game has no ads.

I put ~20 dollars into the game (the cost of a VN anyway) and was able to play through all of the routes/endings/DLC routes. It took me several days, so it was a lot of content.

I was obsessed with the game for about a month so I recommend it I even bought the $80 collector's edition set because I'm a faggot I think I may have lost my job because I played this at work and I am now unemployed

First time availability is crafting event, so that depends on your luck and how much resources you can hoard until then. Do lots of expeditions to get resources and fully sparkle your expedition team to get those great successes (going through 1-1 3 times with one sword will fully sparkle that sword).
But he'll be in later events so you should be able to get him even if you don't have any luck in the event this time.

I've played all the Runa routes now and just finished the Minette route. Although there was more of the life as a queen in that route than any of the Runa routes, unfortunately it never went into that much detail. I imagine it could potentially go into more detail in the Rain route. Her life as a queen got a little interrupted in the Minette route from getting kidnapped by Minette and his owner and turned into an drugged doll-like blood packet.

Also Jack a best and he's so great even outside his own route.

Yeah, the new KoiSenki game was supposed to have been released this month but got delayed.

That Usotsuki game also got delayed. The art looks ugly but so far the game itself doesn't sound too awful. But I don't have much faith in Rejet.

That classical game with the German name also sounds interesting.

Osomatsu was just released, but I assume nobody cares.

The new Neo Angelique game is sounding more like a late 2017/early 2018 release. I still don't know why Otomate is working on it or to what extent. At least it looks pretty.

Koei has been mostly silent since Haruka 3U, but they are supposedly announcing something at their July event. Personally, instead of ports or remakes I'd rather hear about the new IP that they've been working on already.

But anyway, I'm more interested in getting to the older games on my wishlist so this doesn't concern me much.

I'd feel most comfortable recommending Bocchi Musume and Taisho Alice. They're both comedic with very eroge like humor, and the latter has nice overarching plot to go with it.
For more serious there's Shinigami to Shoujo. Same writer as Taisho Alice, stronger story and less comedy, got some praise from the few male JP readers I came across. Then if you want "this is typical otoge writing standards but well executed" there's Code;Realize.

If you try something out come back and give us your opinion. A lot of people new to the genre have asked this in the past but we never have anything more to go off than what we think they'd like.
