Just wondering
in anime you always see that highschool students have to take 'make up' exams if their score is too low

what's the deal with that?
hows it work?
doesn't that screw up the grade curve / gpa average if you force failures to retake till they pass?
what's the motivation behind that/ logic?
>>
Its just to cater to the dumber/American audience

so you're saying its just an anime meme
and in real life there are no make up tests?
>>
Once you get into a school, you have to fuck up to get held back or kicked out. What matters is whether you can pass an entrance exam, not how you do in it.
>>
>doesn't that screw up the grade curve / gpa average
their grade ranking system doesn't work that way. its based on classes A thru F and not averages/gpa.
>retake till they pass
the additional test is only once.

idk, you can take resit exams in the UK too if you fuck up, doesn't seem unusual

We don't have that here, in New Zealand. Makes many of my university courses feel like a coin flip.

In my highschool classes you could retake tests and quizzes if you fucked up really badly, but then again it's >american education so I don't know how well that can be compared.

>doesn't that screw up the grade curve / gpa average

Simple, don't grade on a curve or to get some specific average. Have specific goals for the grading steps instead. If the student knows X, Y and Z he passes. If he didn't then he can go study some more and try again.

What's with the way schools spin education as some hardcore game challenge and not just learning for the sake of being smart? It's always so fucking competitive, it makes no sense.
>>
It depends on the school. I think it's mostly private schools that do that, because it requires more resources to check the tests and all that. Also, you can retake the test only once usually.

They don't use curves there either (or grades, really). You get x amount of points per correct answer on a test, and the total score is basically your "grade".

In my part of the woods they don't, so it's hard to say. Probably no single reason though.

One part is that a lot of people are naturally competitive. This both means that they will be motivated by things being presented as a competition, and also that they will tends towards treating it as such even when it isn't (Ha, I got better grades than you!).

With performance in school often being used to determine who will get the more attractive spots in education and work, there is also a clear competition through school for those, at least wherever this is done through grades and not entrance exams. But even in the latter case, school will be the training for that test, so the competition you get there will easily "slip back" into school.

Encouraging those who perform the best, and holding them up as examples may also create a competitive environment as a side effect.

On the other hand, few kids will find the necessary motivation in just curiosity and the joy of learning to get anywhere with calculus. Trying to sell it as "you'll get smarter" will quickly be shot down by a self image of not being the smart kid.

Another possibility is some sort of underlying idea of whipping the kids into shape. And if we look at Japan there does seem to be a relatively (compared to a lot of the west) heavy cultural emphasis on exalting the champions.
