Have you guys taken your dolls out for a walk recently?

>>17016891
What's there to dislike?
>>
Are there any anime styled dolls with thicker proportions? I don't mean meme THICC, just some meat on the thighs or something. DDs have beautiful faces, but the bodies look so odd to me.

There's the Dollfie Dream Dynamite body. It has a super slim waist but it might be more what you're looking for.

>>
>>17017904
I wanna know what is going to replace them, if anything, cause the standard models, while not very popular, are still pretty good for sales with beginner collectors.
>>
>>17017922
I don't think anything was announced
>>
>>17017904
I hope it's Aoi and Yukino who are being retired as they were made early on and don't look as nice as the others IMO.
>>

How did you manage to reply to a post without looking at it?
>>
>>17017904

i hope volks doesn't discontinue standard models all together...maybe they're just giving them makeovers.
>>
>>17017986
Volks needs good standards readily available. If they didn't Choo would be running laps.

Too bad the only semi-readily available licensed standards Volks has is Vocaloid, but they only pop up at random cons and from time to time.
>>
>>17017904
Thanks a lot. After further research I think a better plan of action for the character I want would be to get the plain DDDy body and find a head for it separately, since she needs face with a less cutesy expression (and preferably with black brows instead of brown), but this is good information to have.

The azo2 body uses the obitsu 50cm skeleton, so, if I'm not mistaken, I should be able to swap the azo2's bust out for a smaller one from obitsu, right? I really like the hips & thighs on the body but I would like to make a pear shape with it. I don't think there'd be an issue, but I figure I'd ask just to get a second opinion.

So, I used to think BSJs are creepy... Mostly the eyes though. Lately however, I've been lurking on the threads. And now, they don't seem creepy at all, instead, rather appealing. Like, they are adorable. I looked at the linked provided last thread, but now they are down. I was wondering what would be a site to shop at would be? A friend told me Obitsu.

Welcome!

Links are back up. But for future reference if you look for bjd.buyfags.moe or dollfaq.buyfags.moe in the archive (http://arch.b4k.co/jp) you'll find the links in the OP of this thread.

>I was wondering what would be a site to shop at would be?

The lowest hurdles are
www.volks.co.jp
volksusa.com
amiami.com
Hovvysearch (1999.co.jp/eng/doll)
and of course mandarake.
Put items in a cart and they ship to you.

Stepping up there are boutique sites like dollmore.net and junkyspot.com and short of going to Japan you can flex your buying power on YJA.

>A friend told me Obitsu
Unfortunately Obitsu doesn't have a webstore, not an international one anyway. If you specifically need an Obitsu you can get their bodies from Hobbysearch and Junkyspot.
>>
>>17022265
Oh, I was talking about the buyfags links. When I checked them at least, it couldn't connect to anything. I checked after seeing your reply, then suddenly, they worked again!
Also, now I see why everyone takes good care of their girls here (from what I've seen) with price tags like those. But, I guess it's the quality you pay for or something?
>>
Do Licca-chan clothes fit Obitsu 23 bodies?
>>
>>17022463
They are usually good quality, but a decent chunk of the price tag is due to availability.

>Oh, I was talking about the buyfags links. When I checked them at least, it couldn't connect to anything

Yeah, in the last thread it turned out the owner of buyfags.moe forgot to pay the bill. So direct links to the google docs was posted in the meantime.

- was the head second-hand?

>>
>>17022466
You're in luck, I bought a shitload off Mandarake for that body. Licca clothes fit that body for the most part; I've got a dozen sets or so but a few of them are a tiny bit too big, e.g. one dress fits perfectly but another hangs loose and it's noticable because that dress shows the shoulders. All the casual stuff like T shirts fits just fine.
I've never found a measurement of Licca's height but the feet should be the same size as Obitsu (22mm). I bought shoes from Aliexpress for Obitsu 23cm, some of them listed Obitsu/Licca as interchangable, some were just meant for Licca, but all of them fit. Just be aware with the shoe thing that shoes can be very snug and may not allow socks underneath which will look weird if the shoe style isn't meant to be worn barefoot.

How do Parabox 40-50 cm dolls compare to MDDs?

The Parabox 40 cm is near identical in height and I have no trouble fitting MDD clothes. OTK socks tend to slip off the kneecaps however.

Underneath, the body is Obitsu and inherently more flexible.

I have a Parabox hand-painted head and I found the quality of the faceup to be acceptable. It has no noticeable flaws however is not as detailed as what is available from the top-shelf creators. This is reflected in the price of course, Parabox heads are exceptionally cheap for hand-painted work.

Consider them an entry-level option if you wish to get started. The head itself of course can always be re-painted by a top-level artist at a later date if you grow to dislike what you get initially. I'm not as fanatic about dolls as I used to be so my simple Parabox boy is suitable for me.

Do you even have a job or regular income?
Minimum wage and 37.5 hours of work a week would be enough to buy a doll. Unless if you have tons of bills because of poor life choices. (Renting housing you can't afford, kids and gf that you can't afford, car payments that you can't really afford, eating take out all the time, etc..)

I prefer DDS, because of their shorter legs.

The house just doesn't have a mailbox or letter slot, so letter size deliveries go to the post office box. Fedex and similar still come to the door, but if you're expecting bills and the like, you just pick it up at the post office.

be more careful reeeeeee. ideally you shouldn't be using a magic eraser on her at all, and you do it roughly for 15 minutes?

brute force is never a good idea with dolls.
>>
>>17043724
>>17043860
Sorry, but at least crisis averted and no weird damage.
>>
>>17043462
incidentally, why not use a magic eraser on the head?
>>
>>17044108
Not them but I'm pretty sure it can take off a faceup that isn't as durable as a factory Volks default.
>>
>>17044108
if you do it too hard, it can be abrasive too.
>>
>>17044116
ok, sure. should be fine using it on an unpainted section that's been discoloured though right?

>>17044126
I thought it straight up is an abrasive, and that's how it works. I accidentally took off my fingerprints the first time I used them.
>>
>>17044270
>should be fine using it on an unpainted section that's been discoloured though right?
This seems to be the case for Volks faceups, but it's generally not okay on custom faceups. The layer of sealant will start to come off and it'll look bad.
>>
>>17044270
The discoloration is in the vinyl, not the surface. otherwise this would be a problem solvents could handle, which they don't. Also are you familiar with magic erasers? don't know where you are in the word but you may have also heard of melamine sponges. They work so well in kitchens and bathrooms because they're *abrasives*. Yes you'll eventually "fix" the color but that's because you're *sanding down* your doll.
>>
>>17044314
think you might have meant to quote someone else. I understand they are an abraisive and that's how they work.

>>17044311
Ahh, that makes sense. Thank you.

Nothing wrong with face now right?
>>
>>17044421
Since it's a printed faceup by Volks I'm pretty sure you've not hurt her yet; it won't visibly strip away like sealant on custom faceups does as easily, so just try not to do it again. She looks fine.

I ended up buying a wig from coolcat and it stained in a ring around my doll's head. Whats a good way to try and remove the stain without damaging the faceup and to prevent the wig from staining in the future? I already have a wig cap but as people say, they don't do anything.
>>
>>17044464
Also any places good for wigs? I own a dollfie I really don't like a lot of the ones from Volks.
>>
>>17044496

pimple cream is good for stains, but even with a wig cap or anything like that you're bound to get stains. it's the curse of having a dollfie dream

for wigs, did you try leeke world?
>>
>>17044550
Stains are just your girl asking for attention because you'll be anxious to have them back.
>>
>>17044496
I just got two wigs from Little Monica, they're really nice. I also quite like the ones I have from Lullaby Poem. And I agree that many of the wigs from Volks are pretty shit.
>>
>>17044550

>>
>>17044550
>leeke world
I wouldn't recommend them anymore. Their quality is extremely inconsistent. The last few orders I got only 1/4 of the wigs were actually fucking usable.
>>
>>17044562
>>17044550
So like should I just not worry too much? Are the stains just inevitable?
>>
>>17044667
Yeah, you shouldn't worry too much about stains from wigs. Those stains are always going to be covered anyway, unless you have the wig on wrong and it's halfway down her forehead or something.
>>
>>17044671
Yeah that's true you're right. I'm just gonna leave her be then and not risk ruining her face. Thanks guys.

>>
>>17044667
Even with body suits and stuff, stains can still happen. You can always just treat it if it bugs you.
Just gotta accept stains are a part of ownership and that you'll be with your girl no matter what.

>>17046158
Did these people get actual notices or are they just saying they won because they were charged? It just feels weird to me that they don't tell everyone at the same time. Personally I think you won. There's no point in validating your card, especially not the full amount if you didn't win.
>>
>>17046196
It's too blurred down there to tell if it's really one piece for the back torso or if it's just got the upper chest already in place. If the back of the torso really is one piece, then yes, with the hard plastic, there wouldn't really be articulation there.

If I wanted to attach the Parabox 45cm shin shells to a 40cm body, would it be better to try to sand down and shorten the shins or spend an extra 2800Y on the internal skeleton knees for the 45cm and make a ~42cm doll?

Speaking of wigs, if I have a doll that is supposed to have 8inch wigs, if I get a 9inch will it swamp her too badly? Should I put a couple of cotton balls to fill the space and have a wig fastener strip on or will it look silly regardless?
>>
>>17048563
It really depends how big your girl's head is and who makes the wigs and how long the bangs are. I've had some dolls wear 9 inch wigs okay, but it really varies.
8-9 for a DD is okayish though.

Gonna guess on distribution control. I've heard of people entering multiple times using friends and family names, so for each entry they hold the amount against the account. Hey, I'm new to this general, but what do you guys even do with your dolls? Genuinely curious. I mean, yeah, they look incredibly cute, but what else do you do? And how do your friends/relatives react when they see your dolls? I'm assuming most of your are all adult males.
>>
>>17055355
Mine are mostly on display. I change there outfits whenever I get a new one or the mood strikes me. I will also take photos of them.

As for what people think. Most people don't really care at all.
>>
>>17055355

Mine stand in a glass display cabinet and stare through me, constantly reminding me of my failure to support them. I'm not quite unemployed but 7 hours a week won't buy new wigs, clothing or hip joints.

I also often daydream stories containing the characters I've installed onto the dolls. The doctor calls it maladaptive daydreaming.

The dolls are essentially a method of giving corporeal form to my creations that's a bit more substantial than a Darks factsheet.

Most of my friends range from meh to meh but also with I won't go in your bedroom although with that said of them drew me fanart of my OCs which was cute. She's also the type to indulge in creating OCs so I guess she understands. I also pay people money on Tumblr to draw fanart for me because drawing is not a talent I possess.

Well, yeah. Not everything stains, but there'll always be something.

>wigs will stain dolls
Not in a way that matters. It's just the wig cap that stains, not the wig fibres, and they're preventable anyway. I think Chihaya's wig was sprayed with some dye or something so it did stain badly, but that's the exception. Generally, nobody's stupid enough to make a wig like that without at least giving a warning.

>exposure to the elements at all will stain dolls
The sun doesn't yellow vinyl dolls nearly as much as resin dolls, so this is pretty much a non-issue. Don't throw them in the mud I guess if that's what you mean.

>touching them at all without gloves on will stain dolls
Just don't touch their faces. You can touch their bodies no problem, because they can be cleaned without consequence.

I've owned dolls for a bit over a year and a half now, and I've yet to have any catastrophes.
>>
>>17080312
>clothes will stain dolls
There are various ways of dealing with it from body suits, skin tape, etc. I've found color locking by washing the clothes a few times with white vinegar is enough.
And if worst comes to worst, the body part can be either cleaned or replaced. Faces are the only real issue to worry about.
>>
>>17080312
>>17080452
>clothes will stain dolls
just don't use crazy dark colors for a long time
>wigs will stain dolls
This is why it's important to have a wig cap, but yeah they generally shouldn't stain
>touching them at all without gloves on will stain dolls
I have owned some dolls for almost 4-5 years and they haven't stained from simple touching, but yeah I'm careful with the face up area and no big deal.
>>
>>17080312
Hey there's only so much you can do to minimize stains, just remember to have stain treatment stuff ready to care for them when it does happen. It's just part of the ownership.

I know I've been asking a lot of these, but

If I bought the Parabox 45 cm and the 40cm spine piece, then could I swap the spines and maybe cut down the lower torso to make the doll a shorter version of the 45 cm body?

I don't like the really long and skinny torso of the 45cm but the legs on the 40cm bother me.
>>
>>17099043
I don't know what to tell you other than you're going to have to try and find out. This is a complicated mod, and I doubt anyone has tried it out with those specific pieces.
>>
>>17099207
Ah. Would it be easier to switch out the knees and shins of a 40cm with those of a 45cm instead? Looking at the frame they should be removable.
>>
What do you guys think of Bunny Bunny?
>>
>>17099534
It looks like the Parabox frame pulls out the spine a the parts with the black circles to replace it in the 40 cm with two joints and the difference in shin length is due to a difference in the length of the bottom of the leg peg since the thigh shell is the same between the 40 and 45.

It's a Mitutoyo Digimatic, as far as calipers go they're damn good. Depending on how consistent you are with your measuring pressure and what type of measurement you're going for (outside, inside, depth) you can usually trust a Mitutoyo (or Starrett, or Brown and Sharpe) caliper to around 0.001" give or take a bit. For reference, a sheet of copy paper is 0.003" to 0.004" thick. For metric, that equates to +/-0.0254 millimeters, and a sheet of paper would be around 0.089 millimeters thick. Most digital calipers are graduated to 0.0005" but repeating and trusting a measurement that precise to a caliper is stretching it.

From what I know of manufacturing plastic, resin, or vinyl parts, it is excessively rare to encounter a part that requires more precision than a caliper. Most plastic parts that are made can be made with +/-0.005" or +/-0.010" and still be perfectly fine, with that much of an error tolerance, calipers are more than sufficient.

Not exactly sure what he's using them on a doll for, but I don't know much about doll-making.

>>17116852
DDs should be able to fit just about anything in SD size, yes. DDdy and L bust may be too wide for some pieces, it really depends on the individual outfit/company.
>>
>>17115030
The calipers aren't a good tool because the surface of the doll varies so much that you'd have a hard time getting consistent measurements even in the same area.

Micrometers over wires could be used to take various measurements on the doll more easily than the calipers could, just due to the shape being so variable.

The other dumb thing is that Choo has a big thing about incorporating wabi-sabi aesthetic principles into the dolls, and precision measuring tools feel pretty opposed to that, conceptually.

Just measuring threads over wires can be a little tricky, calipers would be okay if you figured out a way to take the measurements on relatively the same plane. With plastic, being off the measurement plane a little bit probably won't matter too much, you can use a few simple tools like a surface plate, squares, or 1-2-3 blocks to set up a measurement plane so you can take measurements in "slices". You could also get a contour gage, but this is all a little backwards as the dolls are, in my opinion, probably designed artistically rather than with a defined geometry to follow a functional feature.

Although Mitutoyo calipers do update/refresh pretty quickly so finding high spots/low spots in a geometry wouldn't be too bad, a dial caliper is often preferred for such contours. For something as "organic" in shape as a humanoid doll, using a 3D scanner or CMM probe would probably get you the best results, and the calipers might've been used for layout of mold materials and such.

I do agree with you that it's most likely an aesthetic picture thing to make it look technical.
>>
>>17116852
More or less. I bought a pink hoodie from 9style that is labeled SD13 and it seems a little big.
