The problem is that there's a lot of coincidences piled on that, like the multiple references to god by her character and an uncharacteristically (very) intense theme for a stage 1 boss.

Her music is abnormal in general. It has no distinct phases or alternate melodies to it like ZUN's boss themes generally do, and it's almost entirely focused on build-up. I originally wasn't very impressed by the music in her fight, and listening to it more closely I can tell because it's more like a time limit theme than a proper boss/character theme.

Someone who has some level of understanding of English is actually going to be less likely to rely on a dictionary to translate every single thing, since they may think their own knowledge is sufficient. The mysteriousness refers to the background. While the foreground melody is complex and dramatic, the background is distinctly simple. Despite that its importance is heavily, heavily emphasized by the composition, with it being used for the opening, played constantly throughout (while the foreground instruments alternate and vary in melody) and the foreground giving way for the background every time they finish playing. I could go as far as saying the most heavily-emphasized part of Etarnity's theme is the the part that says the least of all.

Compare this to the other two bosses (and Rumia) who have their main melody playing loud and clear in the foreground right from the get-go, and throughout the majority of their respective themes. There's also very little disconnect between the others and their perceived themes, while Etarnity's doesn't sound even remotely like what a run-of-the-mill excited fairy's would be like. ZUN is also inconsistent about the Latin spelling since he writes Etarnity in game but Etanity in the omake. I have no idea if that could mean anything deliberate. Right now it looks like a typo to me, possibly because the Japanese short-vowel variant エタニティ is especially misleading. I mostly don't want to roll with the "a" variants right now because pronouncing them feels stupid to me, whereas the Japanese name sounds perfectly normal in Japanese.

Probably seemed too obvious. Honestly with the vaguely crucifix looking antenna on her head and the leaves, it reminds me of a Jesus crown of thorns type thing, or a halo.

Although "The Butterfly Fairy who Approaches God" might be a bit embellished. "Kami" isn't necessarily God, and I'm pretty sure it's approaches as in "drawing near" as opposed to "nearing in power to". Seems like it could be anything from angelic to hubris. Perhaps there's a god of fairies/nature goddess.

Personally I don't think anything of her theme because Japan loves to use that phrase whenever they can. She's the boss of the summer stage and a fairy, so that's probably as much as ZUN though about it either, regardless of if it's relevant or not.

Going back to the crown/halo leaves, I think it's curious both Cirno and EL are covered in plants. Those might be the cause. Weird plants powering up fairies, or something that happened as a side effect. Lily doesn't seem to have anything but a flower pattern on her dress, which while completely different from her old dresses, is still not the same. could be because she's actual a fairy of spring and flowers blooming so she doesn't need plants actually growing on her. But then she could be covered in cherry petals or something, and the dress is just symbolizing it because she doesn't have a portrait to show details.

I don't think EL's name has anything to do with anything just for the fact that names usually have little to do with anything other than the anime style "Cerberus Dogdude" that a character based on Cerberus would be called. Her name is probably just "eternal child(bug)" to him because he likes lolis.

I think some sort of cycles are the theme though, plants, cycles, & fairies. I also want to mention the comics recently have been mentioning oddities in weather/season occasionally, although it may be wholly unrelated. Still with a Tengu being involved in the game and Tengu being involved in the wind conviently preventing the ski lift thing from working and the hurricane from before in the other comic, and the 3 light fairies having to make the trees bloom because the others were missing with a fairy MC for this game is kind of suspicious.

I also noted the possibility of the crown of thorns, but the ornate black dress you can see the top of gave me a strong impression of royalty so I went with that (retrospectively that in itself could be religious symbolism). The antenna don't really resemble a crucifix to me, but the yellow does make the halo comparison seem appropriate. Her actual pose, on the other hand, is very close to being an actual crucifix. Add in the fact that she's stated in her description to embody rebirth, and a Jesus comparison may actually be more appropriate than a Oberon/Titania one.

I think it's probably an "all of the above" scenario though. ZUN isn't referencing one particular thing with this character and so he drew from multiple sources so long as they fit in the theme of growth, rebirth, fairies, and summer. There is a pretty universal commonality, however, that Etarnity should be a very significant individual as far as fairies are concerned.

In the end the naming coincidences are what makes me think she's the actual big boss and not a lieutenant though, since fairies in particular all have descriptive names. Between her and her theme's ambitious names, the star referenced in the game's title also being referenced by her stage's theme, the Shakespeare reference specifically involving high-profile fairies, and her own suggestive dialogue and music, it just seems like too much. I never consider anything certain, but out of what we know about the story there's a mountain of implications in regards to her in particular and very little else. Not to mention Reimu's intuition.

I don't deny the possibility that ZUN's throwing a curveball and Star Sapphire is somehow instrumental to all this, however.

ZUN's katakana *is* the word. The English spellings are derived from the katakana, not the other way around, and basically just put there because the Latin alphabet looks cool.



Imagine you made a game with a Japanese vampire whose final attack is called "Bloody Fang". As he uses it, he says "Bloody Fang" in a textbox in English, and also some big kanji flash in the background to make it more dramatic. You use Google Translate or weeb-level Japanese to pick out the characters required.

Now imagine you got the kanji wrong, so instead of "Bloody" it had "Ass" (this is surprisingly easy). And everyone who played the game understood what you meant, except for Japanese players who insisted that Ass Fang is the *real* name because it's in kanji, and what the character actually says is unimportant.
