I wonder what online games would be best for communication practice with japs.
If both parties have a goal they want to reach and they can both sort of understand eachother they will naturally get better at communicating as time goes on because they both have the desire to reach a short term goal.
The reason I'm asking is because I talked on the phone with a jap once but we were both at a loss on what to talk about most of the time.

According to Anki, 12.5 seconds.

My retention ranges from 80% to 90% most days. When I consistently do custom study sessions at the end of every day to review the day's forgotten cards, I can pull up past 90%, but due to my shitty sleeping pattern for the past few weeks I've been having to do the custom study sessions a mere hour after finishing my reviews (which isn't terribly effective) or not at all.

Once I've finished this production (writing from memory) deck (just 5 days left now), I'm going to duplicate the deck and flip the cards over to create a recognition deck. Something interesting (and honestly quite frustrating) I've discovered from doing production is that it doesn't necessarily train recognition; most of the time, I can only say "Ah, I know that kanji!" as opposed to "Ah, I know that kanji - It's X!".

Maybe I should've just done recognition from the start, but it's too late for that now, and I can't say I don't feel a sense of accomplishment from having learned how to write kanji. Learning recognition after production should be a simple matter in any case.

I read almost nothing about grammar at all. Just the really basic shit such as the particles and XwaYdesu.

I actually just brute forced my understanding of grammar by reading shit and if I didn't understand why a sentence was written in a certain way I would google it and find the answer. I feel like this way is far superior than reading 5 grammar guides and doing problems in textbooks.

Read it anyway. The important thing isn't to understand it outright but to have a general understanding of what sort of things comprise Japanese sentences and knowing where to look up what you don't know. E.g., you know から is a thing and that it appears in Tye Kimberly because you just read it.

Aim for 20 new words a day, and read as much as you can tolerate in the beginning. Prioritize words you find in your own reading over whatever other source you have like core6k.

It's very frustrating but sometimes you have to force yourself to finish something when starting out.

It should go without saying, but complete all your Anki reviews each day. Every day. For the rest of your life. No excuses.

another guy with a year into japanese here, I learnt grammar by reading the initial chapters of Tae Kim, before dropping it and simply comparing real japanese sentences and their meanings from trusted translations, then the unknown grammar sort of ended for me and I find now nearly all written japanese extremely straightforward in terms of grammar, so I just look up vocabulary as needed.

I also ignored anki but I seem to be remembering the kanji regardless. i've also never finished a VN but I like 小説

Everyone has their own way of learning. If you feel like just reading about grammar isnt doing much, try taking notes or coming up with your own example sentences using the grammar you just read about. Or if you feel like you learn better by listening, try to find ebooks of videos about whatever youre trying to learn. After you learn kana and the basic grammar.

You could theoretically start right after knowing kana, but it'll be hard as fuck, if you try after 3 months of studying hard you should be able read without being stuck on every sentence for 15min.

After 6months you should be able to read with even less trouble but still have to look up many words depending on what you are reading.

After 12 months you should be able to read somewhat comfortably.

This only applies if you spent around 2-3 hours everyday learning, without skipping days.
Do 20-30 new words in core everyday, learn the basic grammar until you can read and use the remaining time to read whenever possible.
For advanced grammar, look it up as you read.

If you are a lazy piece of shit it'll probably take a year longer.

What resources are you using?

Well, for anime you either use magnets, go to the providers pages for raws or if you can put up with some minor quality issues you can even go and download the likes of Horriblesubs, disable subs if you want and you're set. Alternatively you use other torrent trackers like the russian one, or the private ones.

For VN if you have donwloaded many already you know you can go directly to AS or Miko for the new releases. Alternatively you could swim in the chink and korean sites. Newer ones have torrents, if unavailable you could always go through the shady sites like depositfiles.

For manga >>16951595 already revealed it, just keep low profile there. In fact in this one you'll find the precious LNs that some nips or chinks scan, granted they're sometimes just pictures that you have to zoom to hell to read but it's better than to waste loads of money in import fees just to reveal they're shit when you read them.

If anything the only ones that lost something with nyaa are the JAVfags and some dramafags. Also soundtracks got a little bothersome to get.

Never heard of Cactus (they don't exist in my area), but custom course materials, such as books made by the teachers are nothing new. Quite normal, actually. I also had them when I took Japanese classes. They're probably cheap (or at least cheaper that Genki and others), but ask for the price of the materials.
Go for it, anon, and good luck. Classes help you practice your speech, give you someone to correct your mistakes and explain stuff. If you want, you can still self-study like I did. It gives you an edge in classes and improve your proficiency even further.
I hope you get someone who teaches you not only grammar, but vocab as well, which some tend to "forget".

I've now downloaded Kenkyusha and while I can immediately tell it's a fantastic resource, it seems a little heavy for flashcards.
