Just a matter of taste I guess. I tend to prefer the more "realistic" vocaloids and basically couldn't listen to Len's first two voicebanks, it sounded too "unintentionally robotic" and the pronunciation was bad enough to take me out of the song, most of the time.

His Append and V4 can be tuned in a robotic manner as well however, and IMO I prefer the way it sounds over the regular V2 (same goes for Rin, actually):

I'm not sure where you're from or how the schools work in your country, but musical education is a mandatory part of the curriculum in my country. From early school through college, and it's not so bad.
Everything you have to learn about music theory and DAWs can be tutored within weeks, after that it's just a matter of enjoying yourself. Whether or not you decide musical notation to be worth it is entirely up to you.

And I agree, a lot of effort and work goes into composing these songs and the producers deserve every sliver of respect. The prep work for Vocaloids does not look fun and I can only imagine tuning them to be equal to the fifth circle of hell.

I feel like IA's bump in popularity was only due to Jin's series, and that didn't even showcase her character. As it is, she doesn't have the same blue ocean appeal that Miku does.

Personally, while I like Miku, she's not my favorite; however, it's only thanks to her and her success that we got all the other character-based vocaloids to begin with. No other vocaloid will ever come close to Miku's popularity now, it's just too late for that.
