Okay, what I like to think to myself regarding the SDC is, that everyone that lives in it (excluding the Maid Fairies) is just a friend to Remilia, Lady of the house - Patchouli's stays content in the library with her summoned hellspawn, Sakuya plays Perfect Maido and Meiling just wanted to play gardener (the flower themes in her spellcards and all) - she's the gatekeeper just because the garden is the closest to the gates.

Is she even good at her job?

Some things are worth more than money.

She gets fed, she and Remilia swap manga, and she and Sakuya have a somewhat caring relationship what with Sakuya tending to her after she falls asleep in Hisoutensoku.

It may not be a room in the mansion, but I would think it likely she has a servant or guardhouse where she sleeps. Maybe she just prefers it that way.

Point being she's not treated horribly like in some doujin stuff.

I don't know if I'd call her horrible at her job. She can probably deal with most invaders, but is just lazy. The time we see her working in EoSD, she fails, but Marisa and Reimu are just on another level.

This is more or less the problem with Meiling. The only times you see her are going to be when people she has no chance of keeping out like Reimu and Marisa try to barge in. I would argue it's a pretty safe assumption that she is able to keep most riff-raff away from the mansion or else she wouldn't be there anymore.
