So I decided to play Myth to kill time waiting for an Umineko re-read.

I hear it only has one ero-scene. Do you think it's safe to play the game in the living room instead of in my own room? It's way cozier that way, just have to make sure there's no out-of-nowhere ero content to disturb the roommates.

When did you realize delusions exist for a reason, and that you should engage with people in an emotionally intelligent way, give them the time and freedom they need to outgrow them instead of forcing your own truth on them?

Before reading R07s work I used to think that being rational and talking about problems on a purely argumentative basis was the right way to approach life. I never really thought about things like giving people an easy way to change their mind without putting themselves in a position of emotional vulnerability (like by discussing problems by seemingly talking about something else rather than stating what you think directly) or going along with their "games" for a bit to show them that you're willing to engage with their reality to a certain extent.
Then again, maybe these are basic things and I'm just a social retard.
>>
Just curious, since I've never seen whatever the kanji for Umineko is. From what I know of Japanese, you could phonetically translate that as seacats, as in the OP's topic. However, I'm not quite stupid or ignorant enough to assume that's the case as I'm aware that it could very easily be something else entirely.

So tell me, /jp/, is it seacats, or is it just a meme that started over someone being a dumbass?

yes, in general the truth hurts and is boring/unimaginative to a lot of people. So people don't want to hear it. And I kind of get that. Sure, enjoy your fantasies if it helps you cope with reality, but when this fantasy starts to disrupt other people's lives or starts to influence your decisions that influence others then that needs to stop.
A line between decision making and fantasy must be kept
>>
>>16815970
That's the issue.

Okay, you manage to create an entire genre of horror VN with your first try, and then manage to deconstruct the fuck out of your first attempt in your second, with mind-fuck meta elements out of thin air.

Where do you go from here? Where can you go? You can't be more meta mindfuck than Umineko. You can't just adapt Higurashi with a new setting. So what?

I think the best bet would be to mix Higurashi with a new genre, just like Umineko was heavily tinted by mystery novels. Science fiction Higurashi? Lovecraftian Higurashi? Steampunk Higurashi? Isekai Higurashi?
>>
>>16816096
>alright so this beginner VN writer got lucky with higurashi and the horror genre, but where do you from here, everything's been done already
>he makes umineko
This is why you're merely a pawn. Go big or go home. No breaks.
>>
>>16816096
I think the big thing R07 could expand on at this point are the metafictional/metaphysical aspects of when they cry. You have witches that represent concepts like certainty and miracles inhabiting a realm in which the limitless possibilities of the human world are all present and visible at the same time. There's tons of potential for a good story there.

Here's something I came up with: A group of witches decides to hold a contest about who can control a world. Each chooses a champion and imbues them with their power. Unable to achieve a clear result they repeat the game over and over again, until ultimately their pawns become self-aware, rebel against their masters and seize a world where they can live together.
Each champion has their own little faction and they have friendships and rivalries and each loop focuses one of their stories, depiction the other factions as the antagonist.
Maybe you could actually include choices and have branching story lines this time around.

Am I the only one who feels a deep admiration for Ryukishi as a storyteller? His writing may be rough and raw, but it sure as fuck is compelling. He really puts his heart into it.

Even relatively simple characters like Mion manage to feel very real and extremely likable. It's amazing. By the end of the story, you know all the characters so well that you could easily write some fanfiction without ever wondering "how would this character react to this?". They are very well developed, and so are their relationships with the other characters. The worldbuilding is also pretty damn good.

And the touching moments are genuinely touching. Something as trivial as Ooishi risking his retirement money can make for a very emotional scene. There are so many great moments... Seriously, I really admire this guy.

I think, quite suddenly, I've realized just why I have such admiration and respect and just overall love for Ryukishi07 and all the works he creates, and the root of that is Comiket.

For those who don't know, Ryukishi07 is the creator of the When They Cry series. He writes visual novels, though he's worked on other things as well, as part of collaboration (which is the process of creating visual novels to begin with, with all the background music, the visuals, the animating process-). He sells his work at Comiket, the largest self-published comic book convention in the world. He has been doing this since Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Onikakushi-hen, the very first of his novels and, as far as we know with his pen-name, the first thing he's published ever, came out in August 2002.

From there, he's gained an amazing reputation, had anime adapted from his work (which is not common, at least not when the visual novel has only two people working on the story and the game save for the music) and has worked with other companies since due to the success of Higurashi.

His visual novels are freaking HUGE. Seriously, they are longer than some novels people work on for years. And he has put them out, twice a year save for 2003, since Higurashi.

Sure, they may be very guttural at times. They are raw, filled with pure emotion, narration devolving into screams, or cries, or words of joy. Yet this is the strength of them, they are pure emotion and pure heart. Every single story, I know he's poured his soul into, and from this he has become successful. There was no publishing company save for him, his brother and his best friend. There was no chance this would catch on. There was, actually, a very high chance that his work wouldn't make as much money as it cost time to put into it.

But he sold it anyway, with his charmingly poor art and his love of mysteries, and it's grown so big.

Because he loves telling stories, scaring people or making them feel something. And he took a shot.

And despite everything, he's so kind with his fans, so grateful and thankful. He's genuinely happy when people read his work.

And that's simply the most inspiring thing in the world to me. That's why Ryukishi is one of my role models.
>>
>>16817393
Compared to most authors, Ryukishi seems exceptionally loved by his fans.

Ange is cuter as an angsty teenager with armpit stubble, a hairy pussy and an attitude. So lewd! I want to humiliate her into suicide!

Maria is super cute, but she must smell like pee because she's too stubborn and probably spends days indulging her autistic obsessions without taking a bath.

Loli Ange is super cute too, but she's not the original Ange. And she's a bit too young to have a real personality, which makes her hard to sexualize. She probably can't feel sexual shame! That's no fun!

You know authors of things like nisekoi who just write pointless baits for you to hook on to hoping that he'll deliver this time. This next chapter there's no way he won't deliver. Things like that draw people in, but it doesn't get the author any respect because everyone knows he's just trying to get as many people reading his work as possible, without considering whether what he's writing is interesting.

That and there's not a lot of 07th expansion fans

Umineko should've had angels and such, the Eiserne Jungfrau's superiors show up and offer the Ushiromiya a plea deal:

Battler and Yasu go to Hell forever, and they get to go back to 1986's family conference without them existing, erased.

Shit hits the fan, arguing, fighting between everyone in the family, etc in the end, they decide that it wasn't Yasu or Battler but their own rotten nature and they all firmly OBJECTION to it.

Then you hear the seagulls cry, one of the angels giggles and mass applauding fills the area, after that it cuts to a shot of 1986 Rokkenjima and fades to black.

What do you guys think?

Not sure how to interpret your post senpai. Just because you have a fantasy setting with timeloops functioning as a sort of respawn doesn't mean it'll turn into another SaO, if that's what you're alluding to.
The thing that makes R07s writing stand out is how well thought-out his character beliefs, motivations and constellations are, and a politicizised global setting should give him plenty of room to have those ideologies unfold into a society, make different worldviews clash with eachother and show the problems created by the political aspects of human existence more, where until now he has mostly just focused on interpersonal relationships.

I think that's where Ryukishi was trying to go with trianthology to some extent.

Ya know, I think the reason why a lot of people are so put off by maria is not so much that they dislike her as a character, but that they think of her as the type of person they would not want to associate with, which is why watching her daily life from close proximity makes them uncomfortable. It's the same phenomenon we get in Higanbana: People are careful not to get too close to the weird kid in their class, or even admit to themselves that they sympathize with them because of the social consequences, and that kind of mental barrier is present in them even when they are reading fiction.

I enjoyed the mariage sorciere stuff and Maria taking Sakutarou out to town. Of course, like Ange said it's ultimately nothing more than a sad illusion she has created so she can hold on to her hopes for a better future, but it's not something I find cringeworthy. In spite of everything Maria manages to believe that her mother cares about her, and she hasn't resorted to passing on the bad things she has experienced to others. As far as coping mechanisms go that's pretty good.

I'd watch WTC related stuff on Youtube, but I don't want it recommending me infuriating crap like anime adaptation videos (full of cancerous comments), "goriest anime scenes" videos, reviews of the Higurashi anime, and shit like that.

They are mostly idiots, but there's always someone that could have liked the original VNs but ended up watching the anime instead, thought it was pretty decent and completely forgot about the series afterwards. I hate to see something I love being misrepresented and losing potential fans.

It's the same with a lot of great books. How many people have actually read The Neverending Story? It's a fantastic novel, meta as fuck. But everybody is more familiar with the shitty movie. When you recommend someone the book, they are always like "well, I'm not really interested in it, I'll read it eventually I guess..." or "I watched the movie and didn't think much of it". They can't even imagine how good it is, but they think they already know what it's like because they watched some bastardization of it.

Same with Frankenstein, Peter Pan, Dr. Jeyll and Mr. Hyde... Frankenstein's monster has turned into a braindead creature incapable of speech, Peter Pan has been disneyfied, while the original character was an eternal immature asshole with an extremely limited short-term memory and no long-term memory. Mr. Hyde is seen as some kind of second personality that takes over the doctor's body, while the original concept was great, he was more like a mask that allowed him to do whatever he wanted without consequences.

They have all been completely misrepresented and eclipsed by their adaptations, turned into uninteresting and trivial stories that people don't give a shit about. They actively discurage people from reading the source material, even though it's completely fascinating.

That would be 1CrazyFoxx1. His Higurashi let's play is painful to watch. He constantly skips important scenes because he doesn't think they are important (I remember him literally groaning, complaining and skipping the text because the ending of Minagoroshi was "too long" and he didn't give a shit about all the villagers being killed).

I think he also skipped part of Takano's backstory or talked through it without paying attention because he didn't like her. And I think he censored the video where Satoko appears naked and said things during it that made him come off as a disgusting moralfag.

There is also this completely autistic chick that had one of the first Higurashi let's plays on Youtube back then. Katidid92 or something. She was entertaining to watch and gave Beato a really nice voice, but she would sometimes go on long autistic rants about her personal life in the middle of the video, was a complete moralfag too, her videos often sounded like crap and you could barely hear what she was saying...

And she eventually ended up deleting her entire Higurashi let's play because she wanted to "remake" it with the same audio problems but shittier sprites, but never finished it. Then she deleted it again and tried to remake it with even shitter sprites, but decided to abandon Youtube shortly after. Only to come back after a while with terrible "gaming" videos.

Fuandon was a godsend. The idea that someone read Higurashi blind without being spoiled by the anime beforehand makes me feel happy.

I don't think anyone can solve Umineko. The hints are there, but nobody is autistic enough to go back and read the "boring" first part of EP2 all over again. It was my favorite part of the novel even before I could see all the Yasu references, but most people hate it.

>He doesn't know about the best anime of the past 6 years.

The joke is that the Evangelion of Isekai has a plot about a time-resetting hero being granted his power by a evil witch.

Of course if you don't know that masterpiece of animation the joke is kinda wasted.

Sounds enjoyable. It's just that reading Umineko with those sprites and all the text confined inside that tiny box is just... weird. And while the voice acting is good, I think the novel reads better without voices. You can go at your own pace and feel the intensity of the action scenes and red/blue fights, without having to wait for them to stop talking after you read the text. Oh, and accidentally skipping to the next piece of dialogue while they are talking kind of ruins the immersion. They just stop mid-sentence like robots. Also, such a great soundtrack shouldn't have voices talking over it.

What is the best way for Maria to react to a serious kiss?

1. Blushing and shaking and trying really hard to kiss back.
2. Being overwhelmed by the sensation and nearly collapsing.
3. Pushing away and saying "ew gross".

I think number 2 would be the best. Imagine sticking your tongue in and she starts shaking because she's overwhelmed.

>>
>>16823383
The PS3 port is great.
>>
>>16823411
This.
The only thing that's available in the MG version in that list is achievements for the Steam version. Those are typically used to track people's progress.
You can switch to the original sprites at any time and even the original Japanese script if you really want to.
>>
>>16823526
The only available English script is still terrible. Witch Hunt's script could use some revision in some parts, but this is straight up worse.

And isn't the VN engine completely different from the one we are all used to?

So all those fucked up things are UmiTweak's fault? Even the part where the game can't display the text and the music at the same time in that Ange scene, forcing them to separate both? Why would anyone taint their first experience using that crap?
>>
>>16823139
Thank you. Going to rewatch later. I need a laugh.
>>
>>16823547
The engine is different. Skipping through text is slower than the original, but it works just fine for me.

I have both the original and MG version. I just checked, the music starts as soon as the guards open the door while Ange is on the rooftop for both.
>>
>>16823626
Then what the hell did that guy do? Watch his video, it totally ruined the scene for him. It was awkward as fuck.
>>
>>16823653
Same thing, the music played at the very same moment in the same way. Unless you mean how the text was being auto-scrolled and he couldn't control it.
It looked like it was locked on Auto for that scene. I believe some scenes in the PS3 version seem to be like that, to sync up the voice acting and story with the music. It's like how Rougoku plays at the end of Episode 1's Tea Party where it gets intense right when it cuts to the credits.
>>
>>16823674
I'm not talking about where the music starts. I'm talking about how the scene ends halfway through, the entire song plays by itself with a credits screen, and THEN, after the credits, with absolutely no music whatsoever, the game resumes and Ange jumps and the guards yell at her.

Does that really have nothing to do with Mangagamer's engine? Because I clearly remember the song playing during that part in the original game, instead of playing for a while, forcing you into a credits screen after a certain point and then ending the scene with no music.
>>

>>16823674
Nevermind, I see what you're talking about.
The PS3 version does indeed cut out the last part of the scene for the sake of syncing up the music. Bernkastel reaches out her hand and it ends there in the PS3 version. It's kept in the MG version.
>>
>>16823698
>Does that really have nothing to do with Mangagamer's engine?
The PS3 patch (the one that Narnith is playing) is not MangaGamer's release. They're completely unrelated
>>

All these patches and re-releases are bound to have errors. Like the floating Hanyu sprite in Higurashi.

If these plebs could appreciate Ryukishi's original art and understand that this novel works better without voices slowing down your reading speed, they would enjoy it a lot more and wouldn't even have to deal with all these problems.

Is it really so difficult to experience it as it was originally intended by the author? Everything that came afterwards is just trying to appeal to casuals. The pretty soulless graphics that tries to imitate R07's facial expression and fails, the mandatory voice acting, the "text box" with character names that works much better in porn VNs focused on dialogue...

Don't even get me started on all the UmiTweak shit. Who the fuck wants to see the name of the current BGM every time it changes, especially during your first time reading the novel? It takes you out of the experience. It's like you can see the author manually changing the BGM to something sad or whatever, making it feel less organic and more artificial. If anything, that should be for people that are already familiar with Umineko, not for someone reading it for the first time. But it's not really their fault, it's the fault of the retards that recommend them to play Umineko with all that shit added in.

I agree, I read the original version just fine without the regular sprites. I was reading it for the story, not the art, and the sprites grew on me over time.
It's too bad that the art turns people off from giving it a chance and reading it, I wasn't a fan of it either at first but the story and music really drawing me in helped.
In fact, I find it inspiring how someone with art like Ryukishi can still create a compelling visual/sound novel.

Why did Alchemist get rid of Rena's autistic bunny hands pose? She was supposed to behave in a very childish way, trying to come off as a cute and cheerful girl. It looks ridiculous IRL, but it just feels right with Ryu's art style.

There's something about his deformed sprites and the blurred real life backgrounds that make his novels feel even more immersive. It's like your mind just accepts that bizarre-looking world and gets lost in it more easily.

It's also a very unique art style that stands out and makes you feel happy when you see it. The PS2 artwork is much more generic. And the backgrounds are awesome. Since they are photographs, they feel very realistic, but the blurring gives them a surreal vibe that matches perfectly with the character models and the story itself.

This is very apparent in Higanbana. It just wouldn't be the same with generic anime designs and sterile drawn backgrounds.

Some other examples would be the phone and the super detailed 3D chain in Umineko. Or the super detailed ash tray in Higurashi. They feel extremely genetic somehow, there's nothing unique about them. But since they are so detailed, you can't help but notice that Rosa's phone is the same as the one in the mansion, and the same as every other phone that appears in the story. Even the generic picture of a plant that sits next to the phone is the same every time a phone appears. It's obvious that it's just a recycled background.

In the original novels, you can see the backgrounds but you can't really see any details. Things like phones or ash trays don't stand out so much, it's not as immediately obvious that this phone is exactly the same as the one you saw in a completely different location. It's blurry, you just know that it's a phone and nothing more. Same with Hinamizawa and Rokkenjima. The detailed drawn backgrounds in the re-releases make these places feel less realistic and give us too much detail, leaving no room for the imagination. The image is too clean and you can easily see how boring and empty everything looks.
>>
>>16823924
I couldn't figure out a way to explain why I like the original art and how it feels like the new art and changes takes you out of the story little by little without sounding like someone that just hates it for being different, but I believe you put it nicely.
It's the little things, but it all adds up.

I really enjoy the original backgrounds. They feel nostalgic for some reason, probably because they are real pictures taken in the real life Hinamizawa around the time Higurashi was released. It's been 15 years already!

I don't know, they just look very artistic, even though they are just real pictures with a couple of filters. They feel as if there's something interesting hidden somewhere in that blur, random details of real life captured by the camera, something that wouldn't appear in a drawn background unless the artist intended it. I think organic is the word I'm looking for.

It's thursday, and you know what that means.

SURPRISE MYSTERY TIME

The annual conference has been going on for hours now and the parents decide to go to their separate bedrooms.
All couples have their own bedrooms adjacent to each other, with an adjoining door in case of emergency. Eva and Hideyoshi are getting ready for bed, just as Battler walks by and hears both of them cry out in pain. He tries the lock, but it's locked from the inside.
He rouses the others to inspect.

Krauss and Natsuhi were on the left of Eva and Hideyoshi's room. Rudolf and Kyrie were on the right of their room. Rosa and Maria were in the room across.

They all break down the room and find both Eva and Hideyoshi dead on the floor, no sign of trauma or injury. Battler heard their cries of pain, perhaps they died of shock of some kind? The window was open though and a fierce wind blew through the room and some feathers were found by the window sill. Perhaps the killed escaped through there? But it was 4 stories high and no footprints were found beneath. The doors to both Krauss and Natsuhi's room, and Rudolf and Kyrie's room were locked from the inside of Eva and Hideyoshi's room.
How could the culprit have committed this crime, surrounded by locked rooms?

The pillow itself was the killer. Hideyoshi and Eva fought bravely, but it wasn't enough to stop the pillow. The feather it left behind in the struggle is the clue to the culprit. By being a pillow, it could also survive the drop and not leave any foot prints.

Either that, or a human culprit took a pillow or two to cushion their landing and not leave any footprints.

But it's still bad because the ep 1-2 character are stuck with bad sprites, namely Battler.

His drawing skills are constantly "improving" and changing from game to game. If you compare Hanyu with the other main characters, her sprite is considerably more detailed and the hair looks more natural. Same with Keiichi and other characters that got an actual sprite halfway through the series.

Umineko is pretty consistent overall, but there's something strange about Will and Lion's sprites. Ryukishi definitely improved since EP1 and could draw more detailed outfits. It's not very noticeable, though.

I personally like it. Hanyu's sprite makes her stand out from the others, which makes sense because she's not really human. While Lion and Will are both meta-characters from another reality. They need to look slightly weird and out of place.

Speaking of Lion, am I the only one that sees him as a personification of Sayo's ideal life rather than an actual person? He obviously has a backstory, a personality and a goal. He does exist in that fragment. But his appearance HAS to be bullshit. He's androgynous as fuck even though his balls are intact and he was raised as a boy.

Oh, and the blonde hair is also pretty suspicious, but we could ignore that (I doubt Mion's hair is really green in-universe, it's just an artistic license). But the fact that he's androgynous can't be denied, he even has a complex over it. He really does look like the sprite we are shown.

Also, the world he comes from is a fucked up fragment that Bernkastel created for the funeral. Shannon and Kanon are there, the relatives are mourning a BOOK that symbolizes meta-Beatrice, the chapel is cut off from the rest of the world... And the massacre still happens even though nobody was there to tell the siblings about the bomb that could erase the evidence. There wasn't even a credit card, which means that all the gold would disappear and the killer would have nothing to gain.

Lion's world is obviously completely fake. His backstory, personality and appearance are real in this fake world, but this is definitely NOT what Sayo would have been like if she was raised as Lion and grew up normally. All the androgynous bullshit wouldn't have been part of him, Lion was only like that because he represents Sayo's ideal. And Sayo doesn't even know what she is.

She's not really a girl and will never be one, but she has no genitals and doesn't know anything about being a boy. Lion looks like a mix of both genders because of this. Sayo's ideal wouldn't be a manly dude, even if that's what she is supposed to be, it's just too weird for her to imagine.

Another thing I see fans discussing about is the part where Bernkastel cuts Clair open and all the "red truth" comes out. People seem to interpret this as the real truth, and believe that Kinzo started the battle with the italians because he wanted the gold.

I thought it was pretty clear that this is Sayo's interpretation of the story she was told. She saw Kinzo as a crazy lunatic that fucked his daughter and had a military base filled with corpses. She saw him as a complete monster, so she interpreted the story that way. It's not the real truth.

The scene where Beatrice II tells Kinzo that she doesn't love him "that way" is also Sayo's interpretation, not the objective truth. She has no idea that if you raise your daughter to be your lover, she won't find it strange. It will be natural for her because she doesn't know any better.

Beatrice II was a pitiful person because she was locked up in that mansion and didn't really love Kinzo. She was very lonely and wanted to meet more people and see what's out there. But that doesn't mean Kinzo "raped" her violently and traumatized her. He just had sex with her. If you grow up without anybody telling you that sex is shameful or that your body is "sacred", you won't really care about it. You'd just be slightly annoyed because this unattractive middle aged man convinced you to do it and you didn't like it. As simple as that.

My point is that Sayo isn't god. She can't know what happened during the war or before she was born. Stop thinking that Kinzo is canonically a deranged, violent rapist that would kill people for gold. That's not supposed to be the truth.
>>
>>16828459
There's also EP3, where Beatrice tells Battler that Kinzo captured her and wouldn't let her escape, so she killed herself. And then Kinzo trapped her soul in an exact clone of her body or whatever. This is clearly Sayo interpreting things her way. Beatrice 1 clearly loved Kinzo.

Is it true that Japan hates Ryukishi since he published EP8?

I really like his later works, especially Higanbana. It's a shame that it bombed because his fanbase is fucking autistic.

He's too much of an otaku himself to stop catering to that kind of audience, but the problem is that Japanese otaku are really fucking stupid. He tried to challenge people with a genuinely difficult riddle, dropping suble hints the whole way through, but his audience was unable to understand anything and demanded that he give away the answer.

He eventually gave it away with the EP8 manga, but by that time he had lost most of his fans. All his new works after Umineko bombed because people think he's a complete hack that made shit up on the spot and failed to give Umineko a solution.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I think he had way too many fans for a niche doujin VN author. The majority of his fanbase (even the Japanese one) only knew about him because of the Higurashi anime. They were in it for the "yandere lolees killing each other". So naturally, they disliked Umineko and moved on. The real fans have always been there.

The comedy anime episodes are great, though. They really capture the spirit of Mion's club. I love how crazy they get!
>>

Higurashi just happened to get really popular because of cute schoolgirls and killer lolis. Plenty of people don't even know that it has a sequel and it's Umineko, or the ones that do know aren't as interested in the secluded island with a largely adult cast.

Higurashi is the story of K1, a new transfer student at a local school where everyone fits in a single classroom. Every day, is surrounded by girls of different personalities in which he has fun with different hijinks and shenanigans.

How is that not your typical harem story?

It's just in service of the twist. Eating small amounts just to sustain him is what he needs to maintain the illusion and survive. He's not doing it out of malice which is what you are meant to believe while reading.

>Is this some kind of metaphor about how being bullied traumatizes kids and taints their soul forever?
To a degree, yes. I saw it more as the outcome of letting bullying occur over time without standing up for yourself or doing anything about it. You can lie to yourself, live in your own illusion that nothing bad is happening and keep a happy smile, but it will cost you a bit. And over time, it will accumulate until you break.

>>16829311
>Meanwhile, Batora gets completely fucked IRL.

>>
>>16829271
>Is this some kind of metaphor about how being bullied traumatizes kids and taints their soul forever?
My interpretation is that escapism eats away at you until you can no longer live in reality. Fantasy is a world that is completely under your control, and because of the peace and comfort it can give you it deprives you of the strength you would need to change your destiny and bet your hope-chips on something real.
>>
>>16829211
Satoko sees him more as an older brother, while R07 mentioned that Rika will likely be interested in him eventually in an interview.

>"He thinks there’s a very good chance Rika will fall in love with Keiichi because of what he did during her 100 years. Plus, Keiichi is likely to turn out like Akasaka. However, he says that Rika is still young, so she might meet someone else in the future (like Ryukishi07). But he thinks that either way, Rika and Keiichi will end up having a deep relationship."

Either way, even though it does have harem elements, Higurashi is much more focused on friendships between the characters rather than romance so it doesn't really feel much like one.
>>
>>16829396
That's an incorrect translation, he only says that they could develop a relationship in the future. Rika only saw K1 as his savior and nothing more.
>>
Why do I get the feeling that the meta doesn't exist at all even though it obviously does? I always think of the meta characters as metaphorical bullshit, but I think of Bernkastel and the events of Higurashi as real, which means that everything the witches interact with is real as well. I'm contradicting myself.

Does this mean that real Battler is fucked but Meta-Battler DOES exist in a higher plane of existence and is living the dream?

Does this mean that the people in the island died and lost their consciousness forever because there is no afterlife IRL... but meta versions of them DO exist in the metaworld?

This is very interesting but also really fucked up.

Kinzo's story was, rather than just a story, the result of Will using the power of Observation on him. Such a power is described as being rather like a more "wide-viewed" version of the Detective's privileges, so I'd actually consider Kinzo's own flashback more reliable than the scenes of Bernkastel dragging out the guts, since in the end, those are implied to be just more rumors and unhappy theories that Shannon believed in.

Not just that, Bern specifically says that she'll give Will the power to learn Kinzo's truth when she gives him the Observation power
>>
>>16829503
That's what I mean. If they exist, everything they interact with exists too. Even if it's a metaphor or a representation of theories about the Rokkenjima incident, it exists in that sense. It's not just a way for Ryukishi to "embellish" the story for the audience and make it interesting. All the gameboards, all the pieces and fantasy characters, they all really exist from Bern's perspective.
>>
>>16829580
Well, we can say for sure that Hanyuu exists in Higurashi.

Either Umineko takes place in the same universe, in which case magic exists, time loops are a thing and metaworld Beatrice made a contract with Lambda to make Battler realize the truth after he failed to in prime, or Umineko is set in a separate universe and the "witch" that takes up the name Bernkastel is just a character "Auaurora" felt compelled to put into the story because she enjoyed Higurashi as a fictional work, and Lambda is an original character she came up with as a counterpart to Bern.

I'm more confused about her real goal.

>The witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.
>One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land.
>One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead.
>One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love.
>One shall be, to put the witch to sleep for all time.

The final part of the epitaph says that after the witch revives and the door to the Golden Land is opened, she will give the survivors those four treasures. This sounds like she will reveal that the murders were fake, tell the family that they can keep the gold, confess her love to Battler and go live somewhere outside the island.

But what's her goal exactly? When the witch "revived" after killing 13 people, she never did any of these things. Which means that the REAL ceremony in which 13 people have to be sacrificed refers to the riddle of the epitaph. She expects someone to solve the epitaph before she will stop the whole plan and give the winner the four treasures. It's an extremely unlikely outcome and she knows it.

So... What happens if Battler finds out that she's the culprit? Is it the same as solving the epitaph? Does she expect to blow up everything unless Battler manages to win this harmless game in which people are participating with no clue that there is a massive bomb threatening their lives?

But everything I said above doesn't matter, because she's killing the victims for real since the very beginning, using bribes, blackmail, and the premise that the murders are fake to gain different accomplices. There is no way she can bestow these four treasures, the victims can't revive. The only way for them to "revive" is after the other interpretation of the epitath (the murders) is completed and they all go to the afterlife.

So this means that she doesn't really have a goal. She wants to kill herself, get revenge on every person responsible for her misfortune, and kill everyone she loves to prevent them from suffering (Maria is being abused, George will find out that his girlfiend is furniture, etc). All the magic bullshit is just for Maria and deep down she kind of wants to fuck with Battler's head. She never really expected anyone to accept her fucked up body. Hell, the siblings actually find the gold in EP7 before the murders happen and she's almost disappointed. She has really given up on life.

Is my interpretation correct? Does she really not have some kind of goal in mind that could bring her happiness? Is she just hopeless and the whole epitaph challenge is a bullshit excuse to make herself feel better about it, as if she's giving them a small chance of survival? Because that shit is borderline impossible to solve, especially when everyone is freaking out about the murders. She must be aware of that.

It's easy to write Maria off as an autistic kid with ptsd, but there's a reason Ryukushi devoted a pretty sizeable chunk to her creating her own religion, and her thoughts and feelings being passed on to Ange in the form of her diary and eventually turning into the basis of a modern myth that becomes a huge cultural phenomenon and changes many peoples lives for the better. R07 clearly must have thought she had something important to say. If we're going by Takanos definition, you could make a pretty strong case that Maria succeeded where she failed and became a god.

This is all speculation, but, I'd say that the Japan fanbase is as divided as the Western one. I don't think people completely hate him, because keep in mind that Umineko was popular enough to warrant a remake with updated sprites and voice acting and a manga.

I don't think Umineko "ruined Ryukishi's career", since Ryukishi is still getting work and doing stuff. Hell, didn't Rose Gun Days get a play or something? Umineko is probably extremely polarizing, but I still love it anyway.

Man, I feel like the biggest slowpoke in history. How did I not catch this line when I first read it? Here I thought that the confessions bottle was a manga only thing, but it's laid out in the VN itself, Ryukishi just makes it more obvious in the manga.

It's not really a chart, it's just some reviews that these guys wrote. These are the general ratings for Umineko. The reviews in general don't typically say anything that the western fanbase hasn't already said. Same shit like 'don't make fun of the reader', not liking the general direction of episode 8, etc.
>>
Iwaihime also looks like it has gotten some pretty good reviews too looking at the scores. Maybe it's due to the fact that people who dislike Ryukishi avoid his work anyway so the people that tend to read it and review it are prone to liking it? Idk. I might check out that game if I have time, though, seems interesting.

Iwaihime probably got better reviews because it's way more "conservative" in terms of structure and in the way it handles its themes than anything R07 has done since Higurashi.
Umineko was metafictional to the point of absurdity and challenged peoples views on religion, truth and love
Higanbana had a short story format and dealt with school bullying as its main theme, which is not something most escapists will feel comfortable with
RGD did the whole parallel storytelling across different time periods thing, was overtly political, dealt with japanese nationalism and ended in tragedy and despair
Iwaihime has a group of friends doing club activities until tragedy occurs because of [insert supernatural horror here] but it's okay because timeloops.

Higanbana was pretty cringy though. Especially when it came to the 2nd night with that blind musician or the notorious Renoir of the Art room. It's somewhat hard to tell whether she is a cheaper version of Erika or a poor attempt at creating another Trollkaster.

>o.O
oh shit nigga what are you doing?

Higanbana, who thinks of herself as a demon, is given a chance to "pretend" to be human when Marie offers to be her friend. I think she's meant to slide into that relationship out of curiosity, become attached to it without even realizing what's happening, - constantly on the edge of falling back into her youkai ways but holding on to some new-found form of sanity because while she doesn't mind cruelty she's starting to value Maries friendship and couldn't bear being hated by her. Basically a classic redemption story.

>I could never understand where Ryu was going with Higanbana's character herslef. It's somewhat hard to tell whether she is a cheaper version of Erika or a poor attempt at creating another Trollkaster.

She's the character that is the most well defined of the bunch, and one that clicked almost immediately for me. I can't fathom how you can't grasp her.

She's a trickster/ironic punishment youkai. She's big on irony, ironic punishments, people being punished for their own sins, tricking people out of their own stupidity, and all that. She isn't ultimately evil, but she certainly isn't nice, and can't be downright vicious. She eats soul, but then all youkai do, and only those of the suicidal: because suicide is the ultimate sin (and stupidity) against oneself, and should be punished accordingly. She sees no issue at eating the morons and tricking the weak, and is blissful at the thought of tricking evil people and returning their sins against them.

She is a very well rounded and coherent trickster type of character. I like her really a lot.

A lot of characters that would be obnoxious assholes in real life are liked when it comes to fiction because of how entertaining they are.
Erika plays dirty and is unapologetic for it, there's times where she throws things into chaos but also lets her emotions and pride get the best of her to show she's not as perfect as she believes herself to be, and she's a pervert but with a past that shows she's a person too. She ends up being a great antagonist for the series by taking the detective's role that was previously Battler's and showing that their side can be just as wily as the witch's. Her existence mocks Battler and Beatrice and she ends up being a worthy rival.

Does this mean that Sayo read the last pages out of curiosity and then regretted having spoiled herself? It's like she knows that the book ends with that message bottle but is trying to forget about it.

It's funny, because the same thing happened to me when I read this book. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, so I read the very last page and accidentally saw the culprit's name.

I must be stupid, because even though I knew the killer's name I totally believed he/she (not gonna spoil it, read the book) was really dead and kept suspecting other people.

Do the fan translators have a blog or something where they upload their work? I'd rather download the manga, edit out their mistakes and preserve it than read it online. Websites get taken down for one reason or another, or destroy the original scans with their shitty watermark (mangafox), so I always prefer to download everything myself.

I just can't find a site that has the full manga without mixing both translations. The fan translations are probably done by a bunch of different people, but I still prefer that over the official one.

What are some forgotten scenes/lines from Umineko that you find interesting? EP2 has become my favorite episode because there's so much interesting shit in the first half that I completely forgot about. Like all the in-your-face hints that Kanon is Beatrice.

I really like all the Higurashi references. Remember when Battler realized that Beatrice always let him survive to the very end? I think it was in EP5. I always tend to like the second installment of a series (especially trilogies) the best after I've finished the whole thing. Even though it's almost always much weaker than the third and lacks the novelty of the first. There's something about second installments that I love.

In the case of Higurashi and Umineko, it's probably the novelty of "repeating" the story for the first time. It's very interesting.

Also, since it's often the weakest part of a series, it's refreshing to reread. It feels new because you have probably forgotten most of it, but it's also nostalgic because it's so close to the beginning of the series. It's a perfect mix of novelty and nostalgia that the first installment can't give you, because it's so iconic and memorable for starting everything that you just can't forget it.

I guess I just love the idea of sequels. Reading a good story and knowing that there is a sequel is always exciting. The first sequel in a long series is often the weakest of them all, but it's the first one and feels really exciting.

For those reasons I really love Watanagashi-hen in Higurashi. It's definitely the weakest episode, but there's something special about it. It's the first time we experience the "time loop", the first time we get to see a different version of the story, it's a joy to reread because there's some early installment weirdness that you completely forgot about.

I've yet to read, watch or play a good trilogy where the weak second installment doesn't become my favorite even though I think the others are better. NES Castlevania doesn't really count because it's not a good trilogy. The second game is pure garbage.

The magic side profiles for Shannon, Kanon and Genji are very easily forgotten, but they are huge hints. On hindsight, it's obvious that they are involved in the crime somehow.

>Shannon is, in the truest sense, Kinzo's handmade furniture that he created without borrowing the power of demons
Ryukishi you sly bastard.

One of the biggest hints is Shannon and Kanon's obsession with being "furniture" and the heavy focus on their relationships. If you take their statements about "not being human" and "needing the power of magic" at face value instead of dismissing it as meaningless drama, it's easy to figure out that there's something wrong with them. Shannon clearly says in EP2 that her relationship with George is only possible thanks to magic. If you take that seriously and think about what magic really is, it's obvious that she's tricking him somehow.

It's funny how that's one of the biggest clues yet people don't pay attention to any of the love talk because they think the author is just trying to make you feel sorry for the characters before they get killed.

Also, there's this exchange between Natsuhi and her Beatrice delusion in EP5 where Beatrice says "I will not pay heed to requests, but I will follow orders". This sounds just like Shannon's conversations with George.
>>
>>16836089
>In the case of Higurashi and Umineko, it's probably the novelty of "repeating" the story for the first time. It's very interesting.

Both Higurashi and Umineko second episodes were huge red herrings of absolute gigantic proportion, and I absolutely adore them for that. They are downright vicious.

Watanagashi's conclusions are entirely wrong and presented as absolute truth, masking the actual themes of the mystery for all the following episodes.

Turn is cruel and savage in how it presents the witch as actively participating, just like any other person, and that fucking ending.
>>
>>16836172
It's worth noting that several times it is mentioned that the "furniture" Shannon and Kanon were created by Kinzo, heavily implying that Yasu didn't split into these different personalities until she learned about her entire past. Additionally, Kanon is supposedly the last of the furniture "created by Kinzo", meaning that he likely didn't exist at all until these details were revealed to Yasu. This makes it unlikely that Kanon was created simply to be a "kouhai" for Shannon.

I'm really starting to think that visual novels are the ultimate medium. Why is only taken seriously by Japanese otaku? It has so much potential.
>>
>>16836473
It really is a great medium for storytelling. It combines the narrative depth of a book with the immersive atmosphere of a film.
>>
>>16836473
>Why is only taken seriously by Japanese otaku?
Because most VNs are moe eroge
>>
>>16836473
They can be as long and deep as a book. Actually, they can be much longer than a book without problems, while a physical book can't realistically have 2000 pages.

They also have music, sounds, images... Just like a movie, but without a time limit. It can go on and on, just like a book.

You can have descriptions and pure narrative, something that is usually impossible in movies. But you are no limited to it. You can create a great atmosphere or describe a character/place without a single word. Just with the music, the pictures and the sound. Or with a mix of both narration and visuals/sound.

I really hate it when a writer spends two pages describing something and you just want them to continue with the story.

The only problem with this medium is that you can't be good at everything. You need more people. Ryukishi had to draw crude sprites, take photographs of real places and use royalty-free music he found on the internet, because he was only good at writing. But even then, Higurashi ended up being really charming thanks to the weird sprites, so it's not really a big problem.
>>
>>16836516
>a physical book can't realistically have 2000 pages.
Says who?
>>
>>16836473
It can't become a successful medium because normies hate reading and wouldn't take the story seriously unless the sprites were pictures of real people. It will remain niche and no "serious" author will ever be interested in it.

Fucking Tolkien, man. What a faggot. By the time he's done describing the fucking scenery, I've already forgotten half of it. I can never imagine the whole thing at once. Why can't he just say "they were in a forest", describe a couple of important elements and let you imagine the rest?
>>
Does anyone else think that the more descriptive a book is, the HARDER it is to visualize what's going on?

I've always found something off putting about extensively descriptive writing but it finally hit me why: I just cant visualize it right. Whenever the author spends a block of time to describe the scene I only get a hazy image of whats going on.

When an book is much more minimal in its descriptive language, it plays out like a movie in my head. I guess when too many details are thrown in, I just start missing the forest for the trees.

The problem with that you don't have any kind of impression of the setting if it's not described. The only thing you know is your location and the characters. Lets say we were to describe a scene in your way.

>She entered the room drawing the attention of everyone in the room. With a confident stride and a mischievous smile she gracefully made to the center of the room to inform everyone of the conclusion that she had reached in her investigation.

Lets say this is the first time you've been in the room and you don't know that there is a storm outside the window and that the lights are dim creating a spooky atmosphere etc etc

What the focus is on, is the immediate action of the characters and you can only get the feel of the setting through those actions. Maybe that's just my bad writing as a non-writer, but I believe that while we do not necessarily need pages of descriptions, SOME mood setting description should take place.
>>
>>16837102
You are right, description is neccessary to set the mood of a scene. But some writers spend pages describing unnecessary shit like the color and shape of a character's bowtie or the pattern on the leaves of a tree. It completely ruins the pacing and doesn't even work.

I get it, Tolkien, the Middle Earth has some really pretty trees. But I can't see exactly what you are imagining in your head no matter how well you describe it. Just give me some general information and let my imagination do the rest. Describing the world and characters with such detail ruins the pacing of your book.

>>

In cases like Tolkien's works, going into great detail about the world is what's appealing about Fantasy to some people. Some people.
Dumping information about the world in the very beginning without using characters to anchor in the reader's care is going to make the others want to drop it.
Naturally you want to read it for the story, so having to trudge through paragraphs of descriptions that does nothing to advance the plot is going to be a drag. Sometimes these writers get so caught up in describing their world, it does take away from the plot.
There's right ways to do it, and wrong ways to do it.

I dunno, íf you're talking about people who watch netflix all day you'd be right, but I don't think the barrier is that high for the videogame crowd. If you develop a vn with a more unique aesthetic, something that's neither classic anime nor comic nor too realistic, and a story that doesn't take place in a japanese high school, and most importantly, if it has meme potential, it could end up being a wide success.

The thing with vns is that although they are flexible as a medium, most people are overly prudish to even try alternative media, if all they did was read books during their lives. You can't change book fanatics to switch to visual novels overnight. It isn't necessarily the lack of available content to choose from that has been transformed into visual novels but it's more to do with how people are habituated to blindly perform one or two things, in this case reading or watching shitty series on netflix as mentioned above. I do realize I'm just repeating myself here but even as i type this I'm fine with japs monopolizing vns to their own entertainment rather than letting it overflow. I'm not saying books are any more inferior to vns but the trith of the matter is that unfortunately they will be im a decade (hopefully).
>>
>>16836371
Battler and Ange were clearly flipped and traced, or at least heavily referenced from the ps3 sprites, as you can tell by the fact that the artist drew battlers hair the wrong way around because he was too much of a fraud to redraw it from imagination. Disgraceful.

We'll, I'll be honest. I had mixed feelings by the end of ch8. Back the I was still big on mystery and I picked trick ending first despite knowing that all signs were begging me to pick magic. And the fact that in the magic ending the "true culprit" was to be forgiven and pitied was absolutely incomprehensible to me at the time, so by the end I was looking back at the ride more than being emotionally moved.

Since then I believe I've matured (alas only after rereading umineko 2 times) and able to try and understand stories more emotionally while still retaining the desire for mystery

Other people read stories simply with emotions. They're way too different for to understand.

I hope that if Ryu-chan ever makes another WtC, he brings back Detective Delicious in some form. Man was the boss. He was sort of menacing at first, but turned out to be a complete bro. Easily one of my favorite Higurashi characters.

I really like him as a character and subversion of the archetype. He's an old cop who doesn't really play by the rules but still follows them. Old cops are usually rigid while it's the young cops that break the rules.

I remember awhile back someone criticizing that anime is idealized to a large degree, with how bland or perfect characters are, and how there aren't really any fat people. Other than that girl from the LWA movie who was fat because her character is that she only eats, most characters are not fat or overweight without it being a joke or them being a father.

Oishi is the perfect representation of that. He's his own character, somewhat overweight but still in shape and strong, and it doesn't have any overtly stereotypical points about who he is as a character.

God, I love Ryukishi as a writer.

Well I was also kinda mad at Battler forgiving Yasu when I read it, but I still felt pretty touched when Battler saw his dead family in the faces of the orphanage children
Fata Morgana is mostly about love stories but the fact that the entire VN was based on the premise of making readers change their opinions of past events with new information, and the fact that the writer really knew how to use red herrings made it pretty entertaining, though until door 3 it doesn't pick up and I almost dropped it during door 2
I'd still say it is worth reading since it really isn't that long, but if you can't enjoy a VN 100% about emotions then it isn't for you

Honestly, the VN should have been more explicit about this stuff. The man from 19 years ago, Kanon entire existence and a single line in EP7 were apparently not enough to explain why Shannon is so fucked up. Most people finish the story thinking she is a girl who went nuts over a stupid promise.
>>
>>16841192
That's not the point. Putting a major spoiler on the cover of a mystery series is just a bad idea to begin with. It puts fans at risk since they might accidentally catch a glimpse of future volumes before reaching that part in the series. Like say someone's buying a volume of Episode 3 on Amazon and that volume shows up under recommendations.

Mion no 80s bush! Lewd!

I'm not fond of Japanese pubes, though. But since anime characters look western, I bet she has really lewd curly pubes!
>>
>>16841907
>Pubic hair is curly because it is genetically made in a flat shape rather than a round shape. Perfectly round hair, such as those on scalps of Native Americans, is perfectly straight and has no tendency to curl. However, ribbonlike hair on the scalps of blacks is seen to curl because of its oval-like construction. The same is true of pubic hair.

>Well, some dermatologists speculate that if it grew straight and stiff, it would rub against adjacent areas and cause discomfort. It also grows much slower, so you don't trip on it I guess.

>It's not always curly. Early in puberty it's soft and straight. Most Asians have sparser and straighter pubic hair than that of whites or blacks.

Finally finished Umineko and why do people like Erika again? I've seen a lot of anons who like Erika so I expected for her to do something good in Ep. 8 but nothing changed from her.

She's just the same annoying character from when she first appeared so I was really surprised by her popularity. I would have expected Lambda to be more popular due to what she did in Ep. 8 for Ange and Battler.

You are supposed to figure it out yourself. How the closed room murders can be solved in each episode, who are the accomplices each time and why they are participating in the crime, the culprit's motive, what each magic scene means... The author wanted you to solve all this stuff by yourself.

But not many people are capable of figuring everything out or are willing to read the whole thing again looking for clues. You can just read the manga and it will reveal almost everything.

The best part is when you know absolutely everything and reread the VN from the beginning. There is so much foreshadowing it's ridiculous.

The problem with Umineko is that some of the best scenes go over your head until you reread them knowing the full truth. Not many people bother doing that, so they miss out on a lot of characterization and touching moments. It's a story that can only be fully appreciated after tearing out its guts.

Teppei really was one of Ryukishi's worst characters. Not just in the way he acts, but also in his characterization. Nearly every other character will have some kind of understandable reason for being the way they are, but not him. He's just a one-dimensional asshole with no redeeming qualities.

>Nearly every other character will have some kind of understandable reason for being the way they are, but not him.

what>>16843890 said. R07 wants his readers to look at his antagonists with love and try to see their humanity, no matter how deep it lies buried, but there *are* people who can no longer be saved in the real world. Giving people the benefit of the doubt is entirely different from taking it for granted that they are still redeemable.

If you want to look at it in terms of fragments, maybe there are some where Teppei made different choices and ended up being a better person, but in all the instances where we have seen him that version of him is already way past the point of no return.
Or maybe he's similar to Beato, for whom the condition under which her life wouldn't have ended in tragedy could never be met. Maybe the message is "some people are destined to have a tragic life". And if you look at Africa, China, etc. or even some suburbian areas in the first world you're bound to come to that same conclusion. There's a limit to how much a single person can influence the way their life turns out.

I guess the question is whether you would consider someone who has grown up as a gang member, has a natural inclination to violence and ends up being a remorseless piece of shit an individual or merely a personification of a social phenomenon.
