The fact that anime has become an outlet for teenagers and often times people with delusionary tendencies is definitely not helping.

Take, for example, the whole waifu shit. Anyone who's delusional enough to take it seriously is only encouraging the moeblob shit which has a tendency to be low budget garbage with poor writing and characters, with little thought put into it and attempts to get by solely on the merits of appearing to be cute, as forced as that attempt can sometimes be. Teenagers often have little in the way of quality standards, so they usually eat shit like this up as well, and only further encourage the habit of making this shit which, with time, further swallows the genre in the trope that anime is for lonely nerds with no lives. Which additionally becomes more and more true as time passes.

Long answer, something needs to come along to fill the void that it's missing. It was and still is the most convenient tool for its purpose. Nothing anyone has proposed so far even attempts to come close to filling a need as it is already filled. You're just not looking hard enough. Take a trip over to Nico and you'll see what I mean.

A lot of the people watch those shows without having waifus too. It's about cute girls being easy/cheap to animate. Good quality anime still gets made, but that needs a bigger budget.

Maybe if they are seasonal Waifufags, but those aren't real waifufags. I don't see how someone who found his waifu in 2008 would care for other girls or influence the anime industry. I actually stopped watching moeblob and girl shows when I found my waifu in 2013. What was the point when I already found the one? I'm not one to cheat and flaunt over random characters.
