Can somebody explain what these shrines are all about?
>>16665174
they're tourist attractions
They play bingo in there.
>>16665174
They're usually enshrining a local deity of some sort (maybe an old tree spirit or smth). The space in the picture shows a box before which you pray to the aforementioned deity and offer some change (maybe also make a wish). To get a more in depth answer, you should research a bit on Shinto itself.

They're tourist attractions, cultural symbols, community centers (mostly in small towns), and locations for desperate students to go wish for success in exams and stuff.
They aren't really that different from churches. I mean, we laugh at the dick worship festival but really, Europe has just as much dick worship as Japan.

can i fuck cute mikos?
>>16665539
Not quite, many of them take a vow of chastity while they are in service to their Gods. That being said it's not a lifetime commitment.

They house the souls of all Japanese and all Nazis killed in WWII.
One day, all these souls, led by Hitler's spirit and the power of the Tenno, will merge into a new entity - a super intelligence known as the God Emperor of Mankind.
The God Emperor of Mankind will then conquer the universe and create a dictatorship which will be built on fascism, anime and foot fetishism. This country will be the Fourth Reich, the Kingdom of God.
Hitler started the Second World War and lost it on purpose so that enough souls could be amassed and stored in a short time. When his work was done, he committed suicide to enter a shrine. MacArthur was aware of that and he tried to destroy as many shrines as possible and searched for it when he was in Japan, but he was fired by the US government after Nazi agents gained control of it (operation paperclip).

Would literally torch every shrine to the ground if there was even a vague chance of that happening

this thread actually made me remind a lot of the time I spent in Kyoto,
there were shrines like these in the most hidden places
if the thread is alive till tomorrow I can post them, and perhaps someone with actual knowledge can talk about shinto
Sumo-jinja(shrine) enshrining Nomi no Sukune who is believed to be the Soshin (ancestor honored as god) of sumo is holy place among people concerned in the sumo.

okay time for some pic dumping, if anyone still around....
this not really a temple but its part of that old capital palace,
I just fucking love its architecture
so here is an example of the hidden shrines I've talked about
this is just plain regular shopping gallery, looks like a shinto related store
and the "shrine" inside, actually look so convoluted like a token something store
>>16692353
fucking hell
but if you follow this creepy ass corridor
you will find this weird historical garden
and this big ass shrine hidden inside
and further down the same gallery among the shops
what looks like a graveyard among the unseeingly normal buildings
I think these were all over the same shopping gallery
so whats up with nazi Buddha?
>>16692410
Swastika is a Buddhist symbol
finally to finish off, not a temple but a somewhat traditional japanese neighborhood off hidden behind this portal
>>16692444
yes I'm aware, what does it mean though?
pretty big yard
I fucking love traditional jap architecture
people actually live in these
bells
and off hidden in the corner like a garden
their own humble shrine
pretty sure this must be like a traditional jap family plot just survived the eons
>>16687160
don't they also have a sumo ring located on the premises, or am I mistaken?

Difficult to answer specifically as it's used by a great deal of cultures. Means different things to many different groups.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
>>16692637
The swastika is an auspicious symbol in Indo-Aryan cultures, that is, the Asian Indo-Europeans: Indians, Persians, Afghans, etc. In India particularly, it is even today a very common motif in all sorts of art, especially religious, and is often drawn on things for luck. Buddhism grew out of an Hindu context, and so retains, even in its various disparate forms, similar cosmology and symbolism to the particular form of ancient Hinduism that the Buddha practiced. This includes not only motifs such as the swastika, but also characteristics of various dieties and other characters reinterpreted in the native context, such as the way many kami have parallels with Buddhist, and subsequently Hindu characters. It's sort of like how Caesar described Germanic and Celtic gods not in their own context, but through comparisons with similar Greco-Roman gods.
Basically, Buddha's folks used to draw swastikas on stuff for good luck, and the Japs are Buddhists so they do it too, but with less religious connotations.

What if someone recognizes you? You don't want anyone to know that you browse /jp/, do you?
>>16699259
1- likelyhood of being recognized is actually pretty low
2- in any way it would also mean that they browse /jp/ as well
3- I actually try to introduce people into 4chan
anyway, kyoto is such a gorgeous place
When you take a stroll around the center of Tokyo Special Ward (Chiyoda and Chuo Wards and their surrounding areas),
you would notice that there are unexpectedly many small Shinto shrines on intervals and roofs of the buildings.
It is JISHU-JInha.
It is said that God of love.
Popular with students.

this house was clearly old and traditional styled, everything part of the same shrine as the other pictures in the timeline
in the olden days they had lots like that with big yards, thus, this have be one of these old buildings that survived...
Kagura played at each shrine to dedicate to a god.
