This statement is correct, but the statement in the post you linked reaches this conclusion with the wrong steps. Indeed, animation characters (in general) are idealised or caricaturised humans (essentially all that is called a 'character' is derived from human characters or characteristics). Indeed, Kigurumi is a trick to bring these characters into the real world. However, in this Kigurumi does not differ from cosplay in general! The difference is that Kigurumi attempts to get so close to the 'idealized character', that the result looks uncanny in the non-'ideal' real world. The Kigurumi performer will even attempt to convince you it denies reality, by showing almost nothing of him/her-self and only the character.

It is indeed a bit strange that the mask design is based to emulate a certain drawing style. The drawing style is not the key point that attracts most people to Kigurumi, similar to anime and manga.In fact, the BJD-masks that have been showing up more in this thread as of late show that the 'anime' style is not essential.

So, in essence, kigurumi is not that much different from other forms of cosplay (such as furries), but it differs that it is much more extreme in suspending disbelief and disregarding reality that it becomes fundamentally weird. Some people abhor this, while it fascinates others. Both sexually and non-sexually in my case.

Of course, some parts of interest in Kigurumi are not so much into the characters, but into the (concept of) costume itself. These tend to quickly turn into rather fetishistic aspects, but the same holds for the furries.

If you're an average build dude, or even just skinny, yes. Just wearing hip pads doesn't fix the problem, you have to have the incline to the sides and back of your body. Also helps with stomachs.

The latest from @FACTORYRINS. Seeing this reminds me of Yuri Tsukino's attempt of a KOS-MOS mask he was currently working on but was sadly scrapped permanently when he passed away.

Currently buried under midterm studying and a lab report, but have a not-particularly-accurate-but-it-captures-the-gist-of-it-mini-translation I did during a break:

About half a year after that summer. My friend was performing as "her", so we met in the early morning at the neighborhood park to avoid any prying eyes.
When I arrived, my friend was already "her", with that smiling face and mannerisms entirely unlike his own. From the neck up the character's expression did not change at all, but his movements and gestures made him seem like a different person. For some reason, I felt myself getting excited.
Soon, our little 3-person photoshoot began. In the fresh air and soft light of the morning, she moved and posed happily. My other friend snapped pictures excitedly, also having fun. I thought there'd be no need to worry, seeing them having fun like that. But the reality was, my favorite character was in front of me, and as long as he was wearing her, I couldn't touch her at all. Unable to touch her when she's right in front of me - it was as if she was in another world, beyond the mirror.

Yea, I'm not sure why a person would start off with two layers of leggings, desu! My guess is that he has a latex allergy and the pink and blue leggings are just to keep the foam padding from contacting his skin directly. From my kignerd research, two layers or so of pantyhose are crucial to smoothing out carved foam padding, but those two layers are probably more than enough to smooth out veins and muscle contours; especially with the hadatai going overtop. Otherwise, his regime seems very commonplace. Most of the kigs whose suitup rituals I've seen (or had described) employ foam padding, 1-2 layers of pantyhose, corset, bra + breastforms (unless their hadatai has breasts), and some variety of swimsuit/shapewear garment.

I just got one to try out with a crossplay. I don't know if the doll models are smaller than the regular, but it's a very nice fit to me (though I was specifically seeking a smaller, fitted one). Small enough a large-band Arda wig can fit over fine without the rear shell.

I'm actually not wearing a suit in that photo, I had posted it to prove I didn't have one lol. We wear them for the same reason Disney made this Judy Hopps costume; cuz we just wanted to be so insanely close to the actual thing. It's also fun not letting people know what you actually look like, even if people get stalkerish and follow you around.

And the makeup thing is like...I dunno. We don't wear them cuz we're lazy, we just wear them cuz we enjoy it. It'd be like if fursuiters wore facepaint instead of their big mascot heads. Even though kig is more human.

Every week, our art class selects a model, and as usual I sit drawing them. Or I would be, but things are a bit different today. Normally, the girls of the art department are our subjects, but unfortunately today's intended model is out with heatstroke, and we had to find a hasty substitute. We eventually settled on a friend of the art department. He's maintained his pose the entire time, but now he's clearly tiring, his hands and feet shaking every so often. It seems the girls of the art department are more experienced as subjects, but he's only started doing this recently, and isn't used to keeping still yet. Well, we don't have anyone else - but the biggest problem is that this session is actually a continuation from the last one. He's slender, to be sure, and the padding makes for a decent feminine sillouette, but his shoulders are clearly wider than the original model's, and he's taller too. Maybe the shoulders could be hidden from a certain angle, but I'm sitting right in front of him. I'm not blaming him - I understand his circumstances - but at this rate, my painting's going to turn out funny-looking.

Oh yes! My social anxiety and insecurities are helped to a very very large degree by the fact that the cosplay is mask-based! I think when you're behind a mask, you're liberated from a lot of the uncomfortable aspect usually entailed by "putting yourself out there" in a public setting. You're given an excuse to have fun with outfits and poses and everything else because the anonymity of the cosplay acts as a barrier to criticism. So what if you act like a derp or your outfit is weird? No one will know that it's you, so why worry about it? It's an excuse to explore outside of your comfort zone and experiment being different from the way adulthood has sculpted you.

I think some people with much more confidence than me can internalize that feeling of "act however you want, who cares?" But even then, looking a different way outwardly changes the way people perceive you and the way you perceive yourself. That transformation aspect of kig is a really powerful tool for people at all levels of personal confidence. It really feeds into that escapism we chase in movies and other forms of entertainment

I think they use actual resin in the shape of an eye, whether its an entire eye made of resin or just a resin cap on top of the the eye paper to give it colour.
