What do crossbows count as?

What are you suggesting, old friend? Are you implying hereby that a contest between the two exists?
I'll have you know that we did not need the handgonne at Poitiers. Nor did we find ourselves lacking the gonne at Agincourt, nor unequipped at Crecy. We English, you see, have the yew longbow, and unlike the majority of Christendom, we actually train and practice with our weapons. In proper hands, the bow will always surpass the handgonne, just as it surpasses the crossbow also popular on the Continent.
Trusting in overcomplicated weaponry that lacks finesse and does not reward years of training is the downfall of Continental Europa. The day will come, when we have seized the French crown and land for our own selves, that the world will see the error of their ways. The English longbow will always be more potent than the gonne, and I can see the day when the gonne is no longer even allowed in our blessed isle due to its inherent weakness, slow rate of shot, and utter lack of killing power.

bows for the plebs
Define gun. General rule is that untrained troops with war bows< untrained troops with pre-percussion cap guns < trained troops with pre-percussion cap guns < trained troops with war bows < troops with post-percussion cap guns
