Time for SA 1cc.

I've been working on an EoSD extra stage clear and an EoSD lunatic 1cc. Struggling with both patchy in the extra and in stage 4 at the moment. I'm using reimu b.

Welp, just cleared LoLK Pointdevice with Reimu. I feel empty as fuck, like I didn't deserve to beat this game.
Should I clear it in Legacy too?
>>
>>16515951
It's more interesting without bombs, but it's even more of a boot camp.
>>
How well do the games run on WINE?
>>
>>16516237
Expecting them 'just to werk' I got slight input lag in all the games I tried, and going full screen did not preserve the aspect ratio. EoSD actually ran with slowdown issues and unexpected sprite behaviour. I'm using an AMD GPU with notorious driver support on Linux which probably contributed. I got lazy after seeing all that and just repurposed an older machine to play the Touhou games on Windows directly instead.
>>
Finally got a normal 1cc on IN. Not a huge achievement to brag about on the jay since I set starting lives up, but it was a big one for me. Plan to work on it even more so I can consistently do it and then try it on default lives. Does anyone have any helpful tips for dealing with Marisa in general? She seems to be the biggest road block for me, and even though I keep practicing she just gives me so much trouble in general. Using border team/just Yukari depending on mood if that changes anything.
>>
>>16516594
Setting default lives up is already bad enough, but you have unlocked Yukari despite not having beat Kaguya with all the teams? Shame on you.
>>
>>16516688
Beat it with all the teams on easy, sorry man I am relatively new to playing Touhou (on on off for a decent amount of time but most likely less than 15-20 hours total spend across all windows games including the fighting ones so just now attempting to actually learn a game). I don't mind if I do "scrub" stuff or "secondary" stuff while playing as long as at the end after I keep at it I can do it the right way. I'm getting better and things that were a problem are becoming more and more doable and my goal is to move on to normal 1cc default lives and then up a difficulty with the same, Just wondering if Marisa is supposed to mess me up so much or if she is just a part I should triple down on practicing. Plus some pointers from the players who are way better than me would be nice.

The stars have actually a smaller hitbox than they look.
Try to dodge like dodging a normal circular bullet and it'll work out most of the time. Team Border smaller hitbox also helps with that.

If you're having way too much trouble with Marisa and you can't hope to possibly defeat her, consider using Team Scarlet, and that's coming from someone who uses mostly homing.
They fight Reimu, who is much more easier than Marisa imo, and they themselves are a decent wide shot and an awesome focused shot, as the focused shot options (little spirit thingies that fire the shots) can be set in place (e.g directly in front of the boss) and do damage for you while you're busy dodging.
I consider it a "manual homing" shot of shorts.

Other than that, no, I haven't fought her many times myself because Marisa's fight is bullshit imo, so I'll just wish you to do your best and good luck with her.

>since I set starting lives up
Don't do that.
Like never again, you won't learn proper resource management that way. IN is already generous enough as it is.
>>
>>16516714
Well, I can respect that you found a workaround in the game for unlocking stuff instead of just downloading a score file. I actually had to use more lives to beat Kaguya with MT and ST, so that's okay.
>Just wondering if Marisa is supposed to mess me up so much or if she is just a part I should triple down on practicing
Yes and yes. Is there something in particular that Makes Marisa harder for you that you noticed? Some people can't stand the way the stars behave etc. You could always watch a replay too

So I tried downloading MoF and it won't open because it says I'm missing "file d3dx9_31.dll". I've never had this issue before and any internet searches leads me to a bunch of vatniks and mexicans complaining about it, anyone know what this is and how to solve it ?
>>
>>16516779
I'll set them back down immediately, thought it would be a good way to learn the stages but I can just do stage practice for that. I didn't realize the didn't have a hitbox equal to their size thank you for that. I'll give it some more tries and then do team scarlet if she is too much for me. Thank you very much!

>>16516828
Screen shake on Master spark messes me up but that's a practice thing. I run into things on non-directional laser which is again practice I believe. I seem to have trouble keeping up with all the things moving on Milky Way but it's mainly Earth Light Ray eating up bombs and lives, can't figure out how to do anything for it.

Gonna go give it some more tries, thank you both for the responses. Setting it down to default lives now, wish me luck!

As someone who only plays for survival, I don't have much of an opinion on it.
Just playing casually on Normal mode, by the time you've gotten all the resources in games where those resources are score-based, the game is almost over. It doesn't bother me that there is no longer any reason to collect points.
However, in games with different resource systems, I can get annoyed by scoring mechanics:
In UFO there's very little incentive to ever collect blue UFOs, so they just get in my way. You can get some colour changing UFOs if you fill a Blue or Rainbow UFO, but that's it. It's only useful when there are only Blue UFOs and no Green or Reds (mostly stage 6).
IN's Youkai/Human gauge is a great mechanic, but I wish getting Time orbs wasn't so dependant on it.

SA did it right, where grazing to fill your communication gauge is beneficial since it auto-collects items, but at the same time there's no point in that when you're at max power. It still FEELS good to graze, so it makes the game a little more fun.
I like PCB's borders a lot too, after learning some time after my first 1cc that you get more Cherry+ firing unfocused I find it a great risk/reward system.
>>
>>16518879
2hu's scoring systems are fairly simple, but you can still do a lot with them. I don't have much experience with scoring myself, but I enjoy watching scoreruns in PCB, IN and SA Extra the most. I love aggressive grazing that doesn't force you to dump a bunch of resources on certain attacks.

I don't like how TD focuses so much on trancing and bombing for gray spirits and LoLK on bombing and dying constantly for graze in their main stages. Their Extra scoreruns, on the other hand, are more entertaining to watch.

Keine is absurdly hard if you're using a youkai solo. If you're using a team like any normal person should, kill some of her familiars as a human.

In addition to that, Mystia's last nonspell is a forgettable attack that becomes one of the most difficult things to dodge on Lunatic for youkai solo shots.
>>
>>16522831
I find the spellcard where the bullets come from the sides easier to dodge if you follow the bullets direction, and before reaching a wall, move to the opposite direction.

I made a New Year's Resolution to try beating all the games on hard.

Here are three replays for Stage 6 (I have only been practicing Stage 6 and nothing else for the last two weeks). Replays 23 and 24 are my best ones of all time, and Replay 22 is one that I did just now without resetting (I almost never make it to the Seija midboss without resetting) to show how much I have not improved since 23 and 24 despite practicing almost daily. Well, honestly, in terms of strategy these look good, but it seems that you struggle a lot with both accuracy and reading. Your execution of Inchling's Path had some scarily wide movements, and there's a lot of pre-planned bombs. I would suggest grinding spell practice more, and maybe looking into what kind of input device you are using (e.g. using an XBox 360 controller in any way would mean doing yourself a disservice).

Other than that I tried myself to capture the final spell card in spell practice and found out that it is pretty much best captured by going mostly up and down.

https://a.pomf.cat/zompur.rpy (just rename it)

my replay isn't very good though because I am bad at reading danmaku sideways, but it still looks pretty doable to me.
>>
>>16526895
Scratch the advice about spell practice, I realised that all the hard stuff is in the nonspells. If you seriously can't progress then play a stronger shot type as suggested by others, and a higher difficulty would improve your skills faster overall (try dodging Kagerou on hard). Also check the settings executable, you might have input lag if it's not set to "fastest" instead of "auto".

>>16526895
>>16526984
Thank you for taking the time to look at them.
>you struggle a lot with both accuracy and reading.
I've always had a lot of issues with that. I'm not really sure how to improve it besides just continuing to play and getting better by doing it more. I play with a keyboard, but my hands are a bit shaky sometimes. Inchling's Path has always been one of the hardest for me, I get that you need to misdirect the bullets but sometimes RNG just really hates me and my actions end up biting me in the face when the path moves to where I directed the earlier bullets.

Truthfully I only have two real pre-planned bombs, one at the part where those six yin-yang disc things are all firing at once and one bomb planned for Seija's second card. Anything beyond that is me panic bombing (I panic bomb a lot during Shinmyoumaru's third nonspell).

>If you seriously can't progress then play a stronger shot type as suggested by others
I should note that I've already beaten DDC with Reimu-A a long time ago. I was playing through all the games a second time to prep for moving on to Hard, and thought to use a bad shottype to challenge myself more and better prepare for the difficulty leap, but all the people telling me what I chose is harder than playing on hard makes me feel I made a huge mistake.

>Also check the settings executable, you might have input lag if it's not set to "fastest" instead of "auto".
It was set to auto, thank you for pointing that out.

Are continues good for a beginner??
>>
>>16527259
They're good for learning, yes, since they let you practice later parts of the game that you can't reach "legit." Feel free to use as many continues as you want, just don't think you've beaten the game if you defeat the final boss after using continues.
>>
>>16527351
it's hard to find a balance, because I usually play more carelessly if I know I'll just use a continue
>>
>>16527368
Huh, I always have the opposite issue. If I have a chance of actually making it I'm more likely to choke. It's possible for me to have nine lives entering Stage 6 and still lose because I get overwhelmed by panic and die repeatedly.
>>
>>16518879
PCB IN and GFW are my favorite scoring systems, freezing is unexpectedly complex to do right.

PCB and IN have superb grazing in general too, very active grazing, manual grazing, whatever you wanna call it. EoSD has a few nice grazes but most of them are just "sit in safespot x that isn't really safe but it gives graze".

I could probably rant for a few days why PCB and IN have good scoring but I'd get RSI before I'm finished.

I apologize if it seems like I'm posting too many replays, but I have further questions about Inchling's Path and RNG.

https://mega.nz/#!0N5FxTAA!JkWFbQt5fjGVeSQQsrXpARkIemgB53GSioet0fVH85s

Here are two replays from Spell Practice. One of them has really favorable RNG and lets me capture the card easily because Sakuya-B can hit the boss with her full shot for almost the entire card. The other is a failed attempt where RNG pushes the path off to the side for most of it, causing me to only hit the boss with half my boss or even less.

Is there a way to manipulate the RNG for this card, like moving a certain way or being positioned a certain way will cause the path to shift in a certain direction? Or do I just have to pray that the card's path stays in the middle the entire time if I hope to capture it?
>>
>>16514980
I was trying to do PCB but I ended up playing MoF.

Is there anything to scoring aside from try not to fucking die or let the faith meter go down? Another 100k points and I'd be celebrating victory over kanako right now.
>>
>>16527259
They're good if you want to unlock stages for practice I guess.
>>
>>16528895
There are parts where you can bomb and get more value in point cards than you would lose in faith. Hina's midboss card is a really good card to bomb for example, because even though you lose the spellcard capture bonus, if you defeat it early extra enemies appear and they drop tons of point cards. I'm not an expert on score though so I don't know many other places like that.
>>
>>16529132
I figured something like this might be possible, but I wasn't sure.

I guess it would be prudent to watch a scoring run or two or three then, to find those spots.
>>
>>16528895
Deathbombs do not cut your Faith, so a goal is to strategically deathbomb for extra Faith orbs from the bullet cancel. Don't do that in a survival run though, there's far beyond enough opportunity in the game to get score high enough for all the extends just by playing well (but normally).
>>
>>16529272
Well I watched a score run where the guy exceeded my end score halfway through stage three doing that, then I watched some people commentate on MoF saying what you did.

I don't plan on deathbombing specifically for fun, but watching the video made me thinking about how I wasn't spacing out item collection and just POCing every time I wanted to collect. Additionally if I'm in a situation where I'm sure I'm going to have to bomb I might try running headfirst into the attack so I deathbomb instead.

I'd rather unlock stage 6 for practice and then outskill Kanako rather than load up on lives like I did for TD, but I can't do that without using someone else's save file or something of that nature.
>>
>>16528895
Just the normal stuff. PoC when there's a lot of point items, capture spells, do what you already mentioned. If you PoC and go far enough below it before the point items reach you, they'll only give you about half as many points, but you probably know that already. To avoid losing a bunch of faith before bosses or long sections of nothing, don't PoC immediately; just collect items one by one as the faith meter gets close to running out and PoC when the last few items reach the bottom of the screen. You can collect a point item at full value without PoCing if you get it just below the PoC line, which helps with stalling out the faith meter.

Normal bombing decreases your faith by 3,000, while deathbombing doesn't lower it at all, but you should save your bombs for tight situations instead of going for score. You only need 150 million to get all the score-based extends in the game. Afterwards, score is pointless for a survival run.
>>
>>16529343
>If you PoC and go far enough below it before the point items reach you, they'll only give you about half as many points, but you probably know that already.

I actually didn't know that.

Is that a constant in Touhou games?
>>
>>16529349
This also happens for EoSD, PCB and IN. Afterwards, as long as you PoC, the point item value is maxed out no matter where you are on the screen.

It kind of happens in SA because the point item value decreases immediately if you leave the PoC without grazing, but the difference is so tiny that it doesn't even matter.
>>
>>16529376
>point item value
By value, I mean the multiplier. You only lose out on like 0.03x if the point item is really far below the screen, which is very insignificant.
>>
>>16529376
I'm a bit surprised DDC isn't on that list.

Also, these tiny bullets piss me off so much, I can't describe how mad I am right now. They're so hard to see. Stage 4 in general annoys me. I've gotten it into an acceptable state of 1 life lost but the stage in general is just unbelievably irritating.
>>
>>16527111
>I've always had a lot of issues with that. I'm not really sure how to improve it

The best way to improve at reading patterns is practicing in a smart way.

Try to understand what went wrong.
Know what is the best place to look at, since some atacks require you to look at the middle of the screen.
Search for safe zones with your eyes, think of a route to get there, take into consideration the movement and speed of the bullets, and execute it.
>>
>>16529376
Yeah, in some replays you might notice that when the character is right at the PoC, the point items collected at the top of the sprite are worth way more than the ones collected below it, which are colored in white instead of gold. In those games, where the point item value is directly proportional to how high the item was collected on the screen, it's not enough to just reach the PoC. If you want the maximum amount of points from point items, your entire sprite must be above the PoC.

For survival in PCB and IN, however, it doesn't matter where you collect them because extends are determined by how many point items you collected.

I've been struggling with 1ccing SA a lot so I went back to get some more 1ccs in the previous games. Playing through them I've come to the conclusion that honestly MOF is way easier than even PCB on normal, definitely the easiest of the windows games so far. I can practically do a no miss run up to Kanako without too much effort. It's the game I've spent the least time on too but now I have 3 1ccs in it. The bombing system is really just totally broken if you know what you're doing.

Anyways here's my chart, still pretty new to the games (I started late last November) but I'm getting there. SA is taking me forever to finish especially since I've been busy with school the past month. As it is I can only barely make it to stage 6 on my first credit and I still haven't beaten Okuu even with a ton of continue attempts.

I'm not sure if it's because I've played SA a hell lot but I can deal with this game much easier than most other Touhou games, even IN. On a good run, I can manage to lose only 1 life to Okuu and that's only because of Heaven and Hell Meltdown. The rest ranges between fairly hard (her first 2 spellcards) and "lol I can do it without my hands" (some of her non-spells). Had ZUN not included that rectangular safespot on her 3rd spellcard, Okuu would be terrifying. But she's just an average final boss in the end.

Okay, I'll tell you.

The spellcard with the orbiting suns has a rectangular safespot right in the fucking middle where the suns appear to touch each other. Their hitboxes are smaller than they appear (but THAT much) and allow you to position yourself on the middle and stop giving much of a fuck about those giant balls, allowing you to concentrate on left and right movement to dodge the yellows. Don't go to far on either side or you'll end up in the hitbox of those nuclear balls.

For the very first part, go past the circular waves as soon as you think it's safe to.

When the volleys from the sides start, stay close to the middle line of bullets and stream one volley downwards, misdirect the next one by going further downwards, and then stream upwards. Then misdirect upwards, and stream downwards again.
If you do it right and RNG is kind to you, you should only have to dodge vertically in this phase.

When the lines start spinning, you have to dodge those lines while keeping up the up-down streaming. At this point it's a matter of getting used to it, in my experience, but luckily you're playing Border Team so your smaller hitbox should help you out here. Just keep practising, I don't think there's a trick to it in this phase.
>>
>>16538505

It's simple: the start of the card should be performed in human mode because destroyed familiars don't come back with this card. It's better to stay in the middle and dodge the static danmaku with left and right movement while streaming up/down to dodge the aimed shots. Change back to human whenever you get the chance (between each wave of aimed shots) to further damage/destroy the familiars. It ain't that hard.

There's a lot of people saying that. Anyone with basic shmup experience will tell you that. Regardless of shot you can get over 20 lives and a lot of the situations can be learned in a way that makes them safe every time.

If people are having problems, they should start by pointing out what areas are giving them trouble so better players can actually help out.

Best Touhou for a complete beginner ?
>>
>>16546324
If you don't mind dated graphics/gameplay (and working a bit to get it work on Win10), the first one for Windows, EoSD. Then you continue from there. It teaches you the basics and it doesn't have notable gimmicks. The first five games (the ones for PC98) are best suited for someone who already has some experience.
Just don't become a SDMfag.
>>
>>16546324
EoSD, PCB, IN or MoF.

It doesn't really matter too much which one you start with, just find one you like.
>>
>>16546324

EoSD if you care about lore
>>
>>16546324
EoSD is just about universally considered the best for beginners. I think the PC-98 games are also a decent starting point (though Touhou 1 is a completely different genre than every game to come after, keep in mind, the shmup games don't start until the second game), though the earlier games are less refined as you would expect and the continuity of PC-98 is different than that of EoSD and beyond.
>>

>>16546563
>the continuity of PC-98 is different than that of EoSD and beyond
Except that's not true. I don't want to derail the thread or anything, but ZUN himself has confirmed in multiple interviews that Win games take place in the same universe as PC-98 games, not to mention Alice and Yuuka referencing their past encounters with Reimu and Marisa.
>>
>>16548846
You're going to derail the thread if you say things that have already been refuted a shitzillion times.
>>
>>16549135
Just to throw in some of the more recent examples:

>AWA 2013
Q: Is PC-98 canon?
A: The world they’re set in is the same. However, when I first started making Touhou, I didn’t think I would keep making new games as long as I did, so I’m aware there may be some contradictions. In those cases, please take the latest games as more correct.

>Anime Expo 2016
Q:"Is the PC-98 series canon?"
A:"Yes."

I've already mentioned in-game references. I'm just tired of seeing folks spreading old as fuck misinformation. If people want to be ignorant or are too lazy to do the research, it's their problem.

Now let's shut up and discuss some gameplay.
>>
EoSD is very simple mechanically but I don't think it has the best patterns for new players. Patchouli is always going to behave differently when trying different shot types and Sakuya's non spells wall you in unpredictably (especially new players that glue themselves to the bottom of the screen). There's also the fact that EoSD has a lot of spammy, seemingly random bullet patterns that are hard for new players to read (e.g. the fairies after Sakuya's midboss encounter, all of stage 4). Those patterns aren't really random, but they can be frustrating for new players nonetheless.

I think PCB is the better game for complete beginners overall. If you're really bad you can bomb the whole game to unlock all the practice levels by using all 5 continues and setting starting lives to 5. Don't actually practice with increased lives though, as you won't learn proper resource management. PCB doesn't have the surplus of spammy, micrododging, unreadable patterns like EoSD. PCB also comes with the visible hitbox out of the box.

Some people recommend IN as best for beginners and I honestly don't see how.
>>

>>
>>16550305
>IN is the easiest game
You have to remember the context for what most people judge to be easy, which is usually getting 1ccs on easier difficulties. Nobody playing IN for score would say it's the easiest game by any means.
>>
>>16551655
>>16551685

Unless you count the fact that you can set the starting lives really high as making it "easier to 1cc" (I've actually seen people say this) IN is at the very least harder than MOF and PCB.
>>
>>16552113
How is IN harder than PCB and MoF? MoF has Kanako, who is much harder than Eirin or Kaguya. Same goes for Yuyuko.
>>
>>16552257

Other than her last spell Kanako (and a large portion of the rest of the game) is made much much easier by the MOF bomb system, similarly in PCB if you're playing Sakuya then Yuyuko is mostly trivialized by having 4 bombs per life on top of the border system.

IN gives you a lot of bombs too but they're dropped in specific stages rather than being constant through the entire game like MOF with power-based bombs (and large quantities of power drops) or PCB with the border system and Sakuya having more bombs per life. Deathbombs also cost double so you run out more quickly if you're not always preemptively bombing cards.
>>
>>16552257
Yuyuko is piss easy, m8. How many versions of PCB are out there? Maybe we played different ones.

And Kanako isn't anything special outside of Mountain of Faith/Virtue of Wind God.
>>
>>16552257
As much I like Yuyu, her fight is easy. You pretty much get a shield after every attack, and every shot in PCB is good.
Kanako has nothing outside of mof.
>>
>>16552513
Erin is much harder than Yuyuko but Erin and Kanako are almost on par with each other at least on Lunatic.

>>

I really think Mokou is easier because spell practice makes it so much less time consuming to practice her spells.
>>
>>16552951
You don't even need to practice Ran.
Also Mokou is still harder than Flandre too
>>
>>16553010
>You don't even need to practice Ran.
Coming from experience if you haven't got it in you to beat Ran, you basically won't. I remember restarting the extra stage for hours, for at least two days, before giving up because it felt completely futile and unrealistic. But last time I tried Ran I was on an unfamiliar controller and beat her on my first try... Of course not everyone starts out at the bottom of the barrel like me but it's worth keeping in mind when advising beginners.
>>
>>16552891

>>
>>16553010
I've always felt like Phantasm was originally meant to be the original Extra, but ZUN needed to make another stage for the story to make sense, so he just made an easier version of Phantasm and slapped the Extra label on it.

He probably didn't do that, but PCB Extra is so easy and forgettable.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UvGxolgqtk did this the other day, am i good yet?
>>
>>16552113
The reason IN is so easy for Normal 1ccs isn't the starting lives, it's the super wide deathbomb window. You'll basically never waste bombs in boss fights because of it.
>>
>>16553263
You waste more bombs on IN than in most of the games
>>
>>16553285
I really don't feel that. I'm more likely to die with unused bombs in other games than in IN, and if a bomb helps me survive something that would have killed me I don't consider it "wasted."
>>
>>16553263

You lose 2 bombs everytime you deathbomb which results in wasting just as many or more bombs than you do in other games.
>>
>>16553176
It's alright. Welcome to the club if this is your first.
>>
>>16553303
There are two different deathbomb windows in IN. The shorter window is about the same as the deathbomb windows of the rest of the Windows games and only uses one bomb, so anything that would count as a deathbomb in most other games won't use an extra bomb. If you use two bombs in your deathbomb in IN, you'd just be dead in the other games.

>>
>>16523444
It counts, but of all games, why PoDD?
>>
>>16553303
>>16553371
>>16553403
In recent Touhou games you have 8 frames to deathbomb.

With IN, if you bomb on the frame that you would normally get hit, the bomb invincibility takes priority and a regular bomb activates (which is the same as it works throughout the games). If you actually get hit, you have -one- frame to still activate the regular bomb, while the remaining frames (27 in total for Border Team, 15 for others) will activate the Last Spell. This is why people don't see it happening very often, and honestly even having the one frame is probably unintentional.

I was staring out with PC-98 because autism, and started playing HRtP, but intermittently decided to try out the danmaku games as well. Because of PoDD's non-sciptedness, I found it really easy to learn how to win against it, and wiped the first six fights really easily. I guess it just encouraged me to keep practicing at it, and a few runs later I got through on one credit
>>
>>16553949
What mainline game are you going to 1cc next? If you're already used to the PC-98 games, which I assume you are, LLS is a really good beginner friendly game.

He should probably do SoEW next just because SoEW is jank as hell and going from any other game (except maybe PoDD because it's also jank as hell) to SoEW is a painful experience. Best to beat it before you have high expectations of Touhou.

>>16553949
Your autism is a good autism, don't worry. I did almost the same as you (I played and beat EoSD since that's the universal beginner recommendation, then went back and beat all five PC-98s before moving on to PCB since I knew at that point I wanted to play the whole series). Enjoy the characters while you can, because unless their name is Reimu, Marisa, Yuuka, or Alice they're not going to appear again once you jump to Windows.
>>
>>16554127
I still have not beaten SoEW for that reason. It didn't feel very fair, especially in contrast to later games in the series. I always thought ZUN had went out of his way to make his games fair yet challenging and never felt he threw anything at me that he didn't give me warning or time to react to. Take Patchouli for example: her first non-spell slowly adds layers making it more difficult, rather than just all at once, and after her first spell when she does it again, it's another variation of the same pattern only more difficult and without the training wheels. There are some exceptions here but for the most part I think ZUN does a good job with making at least normal difficulty fair.

I always found learning new touhou games enjoyable for that reason but SoEW just kept killing me to bullshit that I could not of been aware of unless I had been prepared for it. It will probably be the last game I complete because I don't find it fun and it's a shame because I like it's soundtrack.
>>
>>16554215
I'd say Marisa and Mima both follow that "more difficult over time" pattern in SoEW, the latter moreso since her fight is longer. Even though they don't have set, split spells and nonspells like the Windows games, you see the same kinds of patterns appear and get busier over time, like Mima's attack where she charges forward in melee and bullets spray out in a circle, it gets denser as things go on and if I remember correctly the melee part has less warning over time.
>>
>>16554227
I had enough at the stage 3 boss where every single one of their bullet patterns was a gotcha moment, and that was after having enemies slam into me from the bottom of the screen prior to that.
>>
>>16554272
Yeah, I just bomb the shit out of the Stage 3 boss after I take out the side orbs, the lasers appear with too little warning. The bottom screen shit is also pretty aggravating, but I just learned to avoid the bottom of the screen whenever possible (which is a good habit to have in general, since it gives you more room to dodge).
>>
>>16553750
the window for hte last spell deathbomb depends on multiple factors actually. it gets longer during spells, if you have colelcted enough time for the last spell of the boss, if you have more than 1 bomb and if you're playing borderteam. See

Input lag can be somewhat fixed by changing from "automatic" to "fast" in config.exe.

I say somewhat because there's still a bit more lag in some games, like DDC. In others, it runs just as good as in Windows. I use wine staging + winetricks, and also i3wm for perfect full-screen in all games.

I'd rather stick with windows 7, but I blew my installation and for now I need to stick with Linux. I have a pirated copy of Windows 10, but it runs WORSE than wine in some cases, not sure why.

Without items you're supposed to stay as vertically aligned as possible with Yuyuko and gently follow the petals downwards. Where they criss-cross will slowly move downwards so you have to match that. While doing this you obviously have to also avoid the round bullets.

Most of the items work fine;
Camera: Clear the waves and dodge a bit
Umbrella: Wait until the wave reaches you, wrap from the bottom to the top
Bomb: Cheese three waves and survive one
Lantern: Only need to survive one wave

That's just something you learn with practice. It's easier in later games because your hitbox appears when you enter focus mode (by the way whatever you do DON'T get the EoSD hitbox patch, the hitbox doesn't entirely line up with the sprite's visual hitbox and it WILL fuck you up).

DDC Sakuya-B anon here, I didn't make any real progress in the last week so I decided to drop it for now like many anons suggested. I decided to go back to the hell that was trying to beat Ran as a newbie, and in my first serious run (serious being "didn't reset before the boss and didn't lose 3+ lives after not giving a shit about resetting") I already got to the spellcard Chen. It's not the hell I was remembering at all, and I might actually make progress on it this time. I think the change of pace was good this time, thank you for getting me to pull my head out of the sand and stop being so stubborn for once.

I even captured Princess Tenko on my first try, something I never did once during my attempt as a bigger scrub than I currently am. Maybe it was all the practice I put into beating Murasa's survival card in UFO that let me do it.

There's a patch for EoSD that alters Reimu's and Marisa's sprites to include a static hitbox. It's a noob trap, though, because it was poorly made and the maker didn't bother to actually line up the hitbox with the sprite.

Brotips
>Onis
Start near her in the middle. For first wave, just vertical all the way down, then left and right slowly with little to no vertical.
>Oni God
No idea, just try to avoid it.
>Hermit Fox
Just move a tiny bit every time a sphere finishes exploding. Kinda like *TAN TAN TAN* then you move a tiny bit. Rinse and repeat.
>Banquet
Start at the middle (not so) near to her, vertical your way down avoiding the bullets, then choose left or right and avoid the bullets until they start dissapear, then go near her to maximize damage. Rinse and repeat.
>SHOOP DA WHOOP
If you only aim for Ran clear, then go upper left or right so that her main laser is misdirected. Beware of the small ones, for they can trap you. If they don't, rinse and repeat in the opposite direction.
>Clusterfuck
No idea, this one is 75% for me. Start in the center of the screen, then try to position yourself into one of the free cells and survive.
>Princess Tenko
No idea if this is what you did, but: Upper middle of the screen, predict when she's gonna fire, then move down and after you avoided it, move either left or right, predict again and then move in the opposite diagonal. Mabe there are better ones, but this one always works for me.
>Swastika
Start middle DOWN the screen to avoid the blue swastika, then there's a 1-second sound. Time it right so that just before it ends, you rush to move (not so) near the center and between the red laser shadows, then move clockwise avoiding the barrage and when you hear the sound again, move to the closest edge of the screen, then go middle down. Rinse and repeat.
>Unilateral Contact
Oh boy. Avoid the first shot, avoid the things that get drawed towards the center then expelled again and then avoid the next shot while being careful of the remnants of the last one. Rinse and repeat.
>CHEEEEEN
Try to stay in the middle, with a bit of left-right movement because Ran's (and Chen's) shots are aimed. If Chen starts closing to you, move up or down according to her position to avoid a hit.
>Pacifist clusterfuck
Oh boy.
>Final clusterfuck
You will have to remain either to her left or her right for all the card, so position yourself near her in the Y-axis and when she moves, you move with her. PRAY that the safespot appears on the side you chose.

All of this imply that you avoid the bullets that spawn. Also, you should try to aim for this when you at least clear her, so that you have a grasp of each card. Use it only as a guide, don't follow it step by step.

God fucking damnit I lost my mojo and I'm fucking up like I was when I was a rookie again. My next serious run (I get about one serious run per hour of attempts because I'm really fucking bad at Touhou and Chen's Extra nonspell is the easiest attack that I have under a 10% clear rate for because I'm that fucking bad at reading gaps) started off great and I got my first NMNB of the stage section ever because of your tips on Onis. Oni God actually isn't that bad if you know about the safespot in the bottom left corner, I have like a 25% completion rate, which is high for me on this stage. But goddamn, once I hit Ran everything I did well the last run (by well I mean I was bombing instead of dying) disappeared.

I didn't even save the replay even though I should have because I was so mad at myself. I should just continue torturing myself with DDC Sakuya-B because at least the pain of a failed attempt has numbed there and it doesn't take an hour of attempts to get to the meat of the run. I just can't take the endurance required for Extra stages.

I didn't know about that safespot, I just always streamed down and bombed before having to navigate upwards again to clear it. You get a lot of resources for that extra, don't feel ashamed to just bomb the hard bits because you likely don't need all the resources to even clear that stage.

That's one of the easiest extra stages and getting to Ran is fairly easy. You'd be okay if you loose a life before Ran.

Drake here, I'm actually interested in this. I haven't endorsed any hitbox patches in years, but actually I wasn't even aware there was a position difference with jisakujien's runtime patch. I made my thing in late 2008 when I was a total scrub, and being a total scrub I just lined the graphic up with the sprite and just trusted that the hitbox makes sense. I know for certain that Reimu's moving sprite is wrong because you can run against the sides and the hitbox graphic shifts; Marisa's is consistent iirc.

That being said, it's pretty common for developers to have the hitbox slightly off from the center of sprites without an indicator graphic. I wouldn't be surprised if aligning it with the sprite was incorrect, and I expect that it would be easier for jisakujien to programmatically center the sprite on the exact player position. However, looking into it now, wedging into the corner doesn't quite match up. In the game you aren't able to move into the exact corner of the screen, but it is exactly 8 pixels from the sides and 16 from the bottom. Attached is where jisakujien's lines up with that position, which seems to suggest his hitbox is one pixel off to the right. Meanwhile my Marisa sprite doesn't have this issue.

Perhaps my old Marisa sprite is the only one that's actually accurate?

All of those tips are good but I'll add a few that you missed or didn't have much advice on:

>Oni God
Fly with chen! Avoid the purple balls when circling around the path with her. When she makes a tight circle in the center she will change directions and you'll have to maneuver through the curtain of bullets to continue circling her. Find a space in the curtain and go through it; don't let the curtain come to you passively. Overall this card isn't very hard and fun to capture.

>Fox-Tanuki Youkai Laser
It's easier if you stay towards the top of the screen and under Ran. If you hug the bottom, the lasers will not disappear fast enough, so it's easier to get trapped.

>Charming Siege from All Sides
Fairly hard card. This one is all read and dodge. There's no trick to it. Position yourself in one of the compartments towards the center of the screen. Recommend bombing this when she adds more remilia balls.
>>
>>16566233
I think you're right. That seems consistent with what I've just experienced in game playing around in cheat engine. I don't think jisakujien released the source code otherwise I'd fix it and the fullscreen crashing.
>>
Regarding Ran:
>Shikigami's Radiance "Fox-Tanuki Youkai Laser"
Try to stay under her. Wait for the initial burst and the laser bullets coming out of the lasers' spawning points, then move to the other side of those points by moving between 2 of those. That should prevent you from getting trapped.

>Shikigami's Radiance "Charming Siege from All Sides"
Stay under Ran whenever possible, because this card is stamina-consuming on the long run. Predict the path of the red bubbles and stay inside the "cage". Do not hesitate to move up to squeeze between two bullets that will enclose on you.

>Shikigami's Radiance "Princess Tenko -Illusion-"
Easy card. Move in a rectangle. Start whereever you can, then try to do the following: redirect the burst, then stream downwards to deal max damage. Redirect the next shot and go upwards. Then redirect again and stream downwards. If you fail this one, you probably shouldn't be playing this mode, and I'm saying this as a Normal shitter.

>"Kokkuri-san's Contract"
Whatever you do, stay inside the cage. Also, the cage has a smaller hitbox than it appears to. Try to use this to your advantage when the dodging gets intense (= the butterflies appearing).

>Illusion God "Descent of Izuna Gongen"
Apparently there's a safespot if you redirect but I'd say it is better to go raw unless you absolutely know how to make it. At this point, only your knowledge of the various hitboxes can actually help you. Just DON'T stay stuck at the very bottom of the screen or you WILL get walled.

Fuck my life.
First time I had gotten past the cage too.

Watching my replay made it even clearer (and more painful) what my true mistakes were.
Useless bombing certainly hindered me but my one true mistake was that misstep during "Boundary of Life and Death" which probably cost me the run.
Though I don't know yet the final card nor how it reacts to bombs so I can't say for sure.

>>Shikigami: Ran Yakumo
All bullets are aimed, so keep that in mind.
>1: When Ran is in the left or right side of the screen, you go there (if the middle is X=0 and screen is 2X long, you move +-X/2), but STAY DOWN.
>2: When she tries to hit you, you return to the center quickly STAYING DOWN.
>3: When Ran's butterflies come, you just move a bit up to avoid them.
>4: Ran wil go to the next wall, so do Step 1 in the oppsoite direction.
All this while avoiding Yukari's shit. Hope it helps.

I looked into this a little more and started playing around with the game files. I also let rumia shoot at me for a little bit with her timer frozen and the ultra patch on.

PCB's hitbox seems consistent with the issue you found with jisakujien alignment being one pixel off. Correct me if I've made a mistake here but if that's the case, PCB's is also one pixel off. PCB also uses the same graphic for all characters regardless of the fact that they have different sized hitboxes.

It turns out the hitbox sprites themselves in the games are actually an even number of pixels. That is to say they do not align center with any single pixel like you were trying to do by using the corner. The whitespace in PCB's hitbox sprite is actually a 4x4 square; this is exactly the same dimensions as all 3 hitbox patches. In the screenshots that both of us took, it looks like the game renders this whitespace as a 3x3 square. I think this is only because the game is rotating the hitbox graphic, and is reason jisakujien looks off center against the corner in some frames.

I'm concluding that jisakujien's patch is accurate. I didn't test the other hitbox patches again, so I'm not sure if those are still "wrong".

Here are the screenshots of rumia shooting at me: https://files.catbox.moe/2hoe06.rar (a very fitting random name generated by catbox)

I think I've finally hit the point where I decided I want to actually get good at this game. I have a couple 1cc's on normal, but I decided it might be a decent idea to get some unlockers and try some easy mode stage 6 bosses for practice. Assumedly this probably would apply at arguably the same rate for other practice stages on varying difficulties, but for the moment I've been sticking with that.

So far it seems to actually work fairly well. It has a decent way of throwing reasonable difficulty at me constantly, without overwhelming me, which with a difficult game such as Touhou, I'm sure everybody knows it's perfectly capable of throwing sudden curveballs, in various ways, not only difficulty.
>>
>>16572261
Forgot one tidbit, since I went through the effort of doing so, I may as well link the source I got the unlockers for(.dat files of course):

https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=16354.0

You may have to register to get all of them, but I think 3/4ths of them are on external sources. There are a few on the site itself. The only games I saw discluded were a few of the #.* shooters, 15(which isn't strictly necessary), and a bunch of the fighters, which I believe you can find unlockers for on their related English wikis.

What's so shameful about that? Practice is practice. Why should I have to clear everything before being able to practice it? I'm not even playing the game the normal way anyway, so who even cares.

I'm having trouble getting the EoSD ultra patch to work. I have the original file, and I've tried renaming it to several different things recommended in some forum thread, but it still won't patch.
>>
>>16574633
Play it however you want to play it and don't listen to him.
>>
>>16574633

Why don't you just unlock those things through practice? Why do you need to practice stuff you're not even good enough to unlock?
>>
>>16574922
Practicing above your skill level is a good way to improve. Also, some games basically require you to beat them to unlock everything. If you can unlock stage 6 of MoF for practice, for instance, you're pretty much good enough to 1cc. Ditto for UFO and SA.
>>
>>16574931

I suppose for those games that's a good point, it is actually harder to beat MoF for instance off a continue since it's relatively easy to get to Kanako with more than 3 lives. And having to get to stage 6 of SA/UFO every time you want to practice it (and only getting 3 lives each time) until you beat it is kind of annoying. Still though, I feel like doing that is more useful practice than just practicing stage 6 in practice mode, especially in SA/UFO.
>>
>>16574957
SA and UFO are somewhat of a special case in my opinion because I actually find stage 5 harder than stage 6 in both of those games, at least from the standpoint of Lunatic. Those pagoda spellcards in UFO stage 5 in particular take a long time to master.

I don't even know where to begin to give advice to people this bad at Touhou. Maybe it's easy for me to say but those spellcards are trivial to capture.

If you are really struggling with a specific spellcard watch a replay and/or use spoileral.
>>
>>16575557
I honestly didn't consider myself that bad at Touhou before. I've managed to 1cc all the games on Normal, not counting LoLK Legacy since the difficulty in that game is hugely spiked up. I just don't know what to do now that I've hit this wall. I can't beat DDC Sakuya-B, which means I wouldn't stand a chance in Hard Mode, and I can't beat the easiest Extra stage which means I wouldn't stand a chance on any actually hard Extra.
>>
>>16575578
I think Froggy is easier than Ran. Her stage is easy and her only two threats are the two survivals, but with Ran you have a somewhat difficult second-half of the stage, Charming Siege, Kokkuri-san and Illusion God.
>>
>>16575578

I've said it before but Mokou is easier than Ran in my opinion, maybe try that? Spell practice makes all the difference.

>>
>>16575711
I wonder why isn't ultra mode a thing in dem charts
>>
>>16575726
Probably because it makes some spellcards pretty much impossible.

Then again, games like DoDonPachi and Mushi have borderline impossible attacks too, but there's a scoring scene for them anyway.
>>
>>16575726
Ultra patches make the games an unbalanced mess. Some attacks become virtually (or even literally) impossible to dodge and others become a joke because of the max bullet cap.

PoFV Ultra though is pretty fun, but that game was already an unbalanced mess.
>>
>>16575750
The earlier games do work a little better than the later games, since they're more raw danmaku and less of the more gimmicky attacks. It kinda sucks that some of the later ones are almost unplayable. Doremy is one of the easiest and most fun bosses in LoLK once you figure out her spellcards (and before you hit Ultramarine Lunatic Dream), but with Ultra she throws out stuff Seija couldn't dodge.

Suwako is no fun

Oh, looks like I was just using the wrong syntax. Thanks, anon!

LANG="ja_JP.UTF8" wine 東方紅魔郷.exe
or
LANG="ja_JP" wine 東方紅魔郷.exe

is the right launch command
>>

Turns out I had it in the wrong order, I was doing wine vpatch.exe LANG="ja_JP.UTF8"

>set the scaling to be preformed on the gpu
Never seen such option
>>16577299
You mean editing the .ini file? Because it doesn't work sadly
>>
>>16579347
It's in that order because it's a temporary environment variable instead of a launch parameter. I think it works if you run it as two separate commands too.

Makes sense. I figured it was a WINE option rather than a shell variable.

I'm liking this patch so far, it makes EoSD a lot more difficult, but not in an unfair/impossible way.

I only have these and none of them do the job.
I can play by cloning the display between monitors, but that defeats the purpose.

It's pretty fun for grazing. I've only 1ccd normal with it though.
>>

I'd just stick with normal clears for now, at least until you get to SA (if you're doing the mainline games in order)

150 million gives you the last extend.

Is LoLK the absolute hardest?

Depends what you're good at, which shot type you use, and what you're going for. If you know how to strategically spam bombs with Sanae or Reisen, it can be one of the easiest. If you're the type that always goes for spell card bonuses, it's up there.
