Shit gets good. When I first read over this I missed out on so many details (bad translation + too busy jacking off). Now that it's finished, all I can say is: insidedoll is a damn genius.

The masks *used* to be thrown out or taken home by the performers as a parting souvenir (or else they would just be chucked). That was back in the era of the Sailor Moon shows, so 1990s?

These days official masks are mostly stored away or refurbished. Main reason is the Precure All Star shows, which have every single character under the sun. Second reason is that masks just last longer than they used to. Third reason is the advantages of having masks and costumes handy to promote the show when they license to other countries (like Taiwan) a few years down the line.

At the very least the production company keep all of the original molds in storage so the masks can be remade on-demand (and actually fix Cure Peach/Pine's eyes). That, and molding is the most labour-intensive part of the process so it's really not worth throwing them out.

When they first started making the All Stars movies it was possible. Character bloat is too high now, and I imagine these shows only have enough budget to hire so many dancers.

But the actual characters that show up vary from year to year, usually tilted towards whatever shows are more recent but still. It also helps to keep a healthy reserve of masks/costumes in case independent venues (like malls or housing estates) want to hire a character or show for their own promotional purposes. Never say never, I've seen pics of One Piece kigs being loaned out to the UK and America for promotional stuff. But for Precure the likelihood is about as low as the name recognition. Taiwan gets some shows because Precure is featured on a big kids television show there. What's the point in hiring mascot costumes to promote the dub of an obscure kids anime on Netflix?

They still have *a* budget though. And regardless of profit, after a certain number of characters you hit diminishing returns and it makes no sense to expand the roster further.

A few reasons off the top of my head to limit the number of characters: stage size (needs to be manageable in smaller venues, both onstage and in providing sufficient backstage space), difficulty in choreographing larger groups, choreographing additional songs, danger of exhausting the kids in the meet-and-greet lines (too many characters + too long wait times).

I would say encasement, but because of the zentai. It's sort of like a light bondage thing. Being covered in zentai head to toe as one solid garment makes it something you can't quickly get any part of yourself out of, even when it's not padlocked. With something like a fursuit they are usually made up of separate pants and gloves and feet and head, and you could pretty easily take parts off and be "free". And a lot of female maskers typically just wear the mask, and maybe a silicone bust/torso. It's only recently that I've seen them using zentai.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree. Before I found out about kig, zentai encasement was one of my primary fetishes. I guess that's why I focus on the mask so much; the appeal of the zentai is kind of a given for me, so the rigid encasement + dollification + tg + alternate identity + breathplay aspect of the mask takes center stage instead.

I've kigged with some glasses-wearing kigs. They usually get contact lenses when their glasses don't fit inside their masks. But once or twice I've seen them go out without glasses or contacts and just rely heavily on a handler. Holding them by the arm and being led diligently by them.

Yeah, here's a posting by one of the events companies that runs character shows. Good info on the kinds of things they require from the venue, and what the company itself provides with the service.

It's not like a fancy dress shop, you can't hire out characters to pass out leaflets or work in your maid cafe, sorry. Seems limited to the standard "stage show/meet and greet" formula. Though I imagine if you're an established venue and you have actual professional connections you could negotiate something closer to your specific needs: e.g. "I just want to hire two characters for a meet-and-greet, don't care which ones."
