Also for honorable recommendations

Danganronpa series and also Steins;Gate. Umineko is not bad and neither is Higurashi.

I've been meaning to read it for a while and have only now realised how short it is. I'll probably read it sometime this week.

Is Danganronpa that good? I dropped the first game because the "protagonist" was so damn bland I couldn't stand playing as him.

As much as I hate the ending, Remember11 will always be one of the most interesting VN's I've ever read. The way is structured is also very clever; I haven't found any other VN that is as thought intriguing and provoking, or at least as well designed as Remember11.

And for the record, the first time I played and finished the game I went on a research like a madman on what had happened at the ending. So I'm not just a moron with an opinion, I don't like it because of the actual events that lead to it.

Also, they didn't even try to add anything new to the 2011 re-mastered edition for the PSP. They gave us the same freaking ending TWICE, and their excuse for it was pathetic.

Fate/Stay Night
>>
>>16470129
It's decent. I just wished that they spent less time pandering and more time actually world-building. Seemed like the authors have the potential to make an interesting dystopian sci-fi setting if they actually tried. But the devs I guess thought that they'd do sci-fi lite because you only ever get bite-sized pieces of a variety of vague topics that are never talked about again.

The actually good/interesting characters like Jamie, Kira Mika and Anna only show up a handful of times compared to...

But instead we got dumb characters like Dorothy and Streaming-chan. God forbid we "don't" have blatant waifu shit for the sole purpose of having waifus. And instead create good characters that work of their own accord.

Ever17 (9.8). Remember11 is a close second (9.7). Runners-up are Umineko (9.5), Danganronpa 2 (9.3) and Danganronpa 1 (9.2).

Unlike most people, I loved Remember11's ending. I loved piecing a lot of the backstory together myself without the game spelling out every last detail for me including the ones I already knew way in advance (looking at you, Root Double).

>>16463809
>Is Danganronpa that good?
Yes, but it has a very unique style (and a lot of its appeal comes from that) that's definitely not for everybody. It's completely ridiculous and dead serious at the same time, and it doesn't work for everybody. I went in not expecting to enjoy that kind of style but I got totally hooked and found out I absolutely love that style. You'll just have to try it; if halfway through the first trial you still don't like it, then it just isn't for you.

By the way, people will tell you Danganronpa 2 is better, and they are right, but DO NOT play DR2 before playing DR1. DR2 completely spoils DR1, and more importantly, many aspects of DR2 will not make sense without DR1, particularly towards the end. I think DR2 would be pretty disappointing without having read DR1 first.

>>16469459
I can't say DR2's protagonist is much more interesting. But that's okay, all the other characters more than make up for it.

>>16469489
>Does the story have a good conclusion for it to be worth it to push on?
Nope. Though I liked the ending, most people seem to hate it. Inganock is about the journey, not the destination. Maybe leave it for a few years and then try it again (your taste in stories will change over time); it's what I did, I disliked it when it first came out but gave it another try a year ago and liked it (7.6). Though I liked Sharnoth a lot better myself (8.4).

>>16469949
>They gave us the same freaking ending TWICE
That's because that ending is part of Remember11. Remember11 wouldn't be the same if they changed the ending, at least not in a way that would satisfy you.

Plus, it wasn't the original creators working on the port, it was Cyberfront. If you'd seen what they did to Ever17 (with its remake) you would be glad they left Remember11 unaltered.

>>16510939
But Muv-Luv has become too popular, so /jp/ isn't allowed to like it anymore.

the writing, usually
>>
>>16528104
Still haven't finished it. Not sure where I last stalled it; I've at least finished Route E.

I really like I/O's plot (the events and themes) but really dislike most other parts of its story (I still barely care for any of the characters, the writing feels dull, the stuff that's happening at any given moment is usually not very interesting, and just reading it is in general not fun). Route B was great and route E was good, but I really disliked A, C and D, and can't really bring myself to finish it when I can also spend my time on VNs I'm actually enjoying.

I think the VN as a whole is just a mess. If it had been streamlined a bit better so that there was always something interesting going on it could've been a really good VN. They really, really improved in that regard with Root Double but unfortunately they went in the exact opposite direction when it came to plot complexity, which made Root Double fun to read from start to end but ultimately unsatisfying plot-wise (made worse by how obvious all the twists were). (I ended up giving Root Double a rating of 8.0.)

Already watched the Higurashi anime. Is it still worth playing? Does it elaborate more on things? I know details from adapted anime are often cut out to make space for it's time slots.

I'll give Kara a try. Any idea where I could get it?
>>
>>16528352
If you're talking about the one in which survivors of a plane crash take shelter in a cabin on a mountain in a snowstorm, that's Remember11.

>>16528360
Higurashi the anime is practically a completely different genre from Higurashi the VN (despite having the same plot). The anime was like an over-the-top slasher flick, while the VN is extremely immersive psychological horror. Onikakushi, its first episode, is the scariest story I've ever read, but I went in with 0 knowledge of anything related to Higurashi.
>>
>>16528409
Hmm, interesting. I'll give that a try too, then. Thanks for the suggestions. It's been many, many, many years since I saw Higurashi, and my memory ain't so good, so maybe it will be fine, since I only have the roughest of outlines for what the plot was.

No way is it unfinished! How have you even come up with such a travesty of conclusion?
A concept behind how the ending is made plays pivotal role in how you are to succesfully apprehend the whole YUKIDOH plan. later on, after unlocking every BAD end and TIP.
This is the best part about this masterpiece of a VN.
No ways of extolling are ample enough to express my gratitude to Uchikoshi, Nakazawa and whole KID team, who gave birth to this VN. I encourage EVERY single person here to read this magnum opus of theirs, as this is a piece of work which can drastically change a person's views on this world, on how we people interact with each other and whatnot... Grappling such a wide array of scientific and philosophical topics, it excells at putting them into the plot naturally, avoiding any hurdles story-wise... A must-read indeed, start reading it now, please.

My favourite by far is Sharin no Kuni. I've read it in English and will read in Jap once I'm good. The characters are good and the setting makes little stuff important.

I find a lot of Ever17 love here though. I didn't read it though since I don't like Sci-fi genre much. Among Sci-Fi, Muv-Luv is great but plot wise a bit overrated IMO. In fact, I just started watching EVA anime to practice Japanese and as I was depressed, but it's not helping me into the 6th ep.
>>

>I didn't read it though
You HAVE to, though. Start with E17, then you might want to complete every iteration of Zero Escape series, and then you will be eligible to contemplate THE best VN out there, namely - Remember11. This is an absolute masterpiece with thought-provoking plot. No way is it not going to change your view on some concepts this world is built upon! Truly a pinnacle of VNs and a prime example of what "10/10" is.

Too bad they are tied with Jast so EOPs have to wait for infinity before they can taste more Nitro+ epicness.

ITH/Chiitrans is a thing, literally anyone could start reading any VN available RIGHT NOW.

This. I have never felt so many feelings with a single story like I did with this. What a rollercoaster.

My God what an incredible troll.

Really shows how full of normalfags /adv/ must be if it took them that long to get it.

I'm on Natsuki's route and it got kinda boring, all the h-scenes are just her saying "I'M A SLUT PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY". Rika's good ending made me tear up to be honest. I still haven't gotten her bad endings because I've grown too attached to her

Maybe not the best VN ever, but definitely up there is The House in Fata Morgana. It was positively different from the usual stuff you find in this medium.
