There really is no good place to discuss all things arcade on this site. /vr/ has the arbitrary cut off at 1999, and is filled with insufferable fanboys anyway, /vg/ is disgustingly insular even for 4chan, and an arcade general couldn't survive there due to overlap anyway, and /v/... lel.

I don't like generals, but I can see that arcade-related discussion couldn't be maintained here in any other fashion, and I know that there are enough arcade otakus on this board to make a regular thread worthwhile. By arcade related discussion I mean arcade games, arcade cabinets (originals or self-made), arcade joints, arcade emulators (mame and its alternatives), arcade-style console games, home ports of arcade games, superguns, fightcade, etc. etc. Post about whatever arcade games you're currently spending time with, your scores, and more importantly, your thoughts on them.

If the topic is deemed too unrelated to this board (though I couldn't see why), or not enough people are interested, we can always make this thread a one-off.
>>
I like the tentative topic of this thread but I don't want more generals on /jp/.

Anyway Last Blade 2 best game.

I will just say that gekka no kenshi did an infinitely better job at capturing the samurai aesthetic (even though its not set in the "classic" sengoku period) than samurai spirits. the latter has such a confused setting because it inherited the street fighter 2 premise of a global cast, but then moved in an ever more exclusively japanese direction. soul calibur executed the "historic" world fighter setting much better, even though it didnt come up with it. I think samspi's muddled quality is why snk came up with an alternative japanese sword fighter series in the first place

Generals are actually despised here and only forcefully shoved in by entitled faggots like idolfags so please avoid adding another one. Just make this normal thread which will stay long enough because /jp/ is slow board.

By the way, I heard Arcade is dying out in Japan because it's probably overshadowed by other platformers including mobile games. Do they still make shmup arcade cabinets for new shmups in japan?

Don't make it a general, please.
The last good arcade died in my country in 2015 if I remember. They had a whole bunch of the 'generic' cabinets as well as things like tekken vs systems, house of the dead, various racing games as well as a bunch of rhythm games - my main draw there. For some reason, they moved their location from basement level on the main street in my city to the 3rd floor of a small shopping mall that was next to their old location. Apart from a food court, they were the only other feature for that floor. I assume the business died from there; last I saw they were listed with a small business sales firm. I guess the owner wanted to get out of the business. No explanation was given on their small social media page. Quite sad that the machines will be sold and put in places where they wont be appreciated properly.
>>
>>16442665
they dont, unless you want to count specialised stuff like the darius cabinets, and even the newest of those is over half a decade old by now
>>
I'm a bit ashamed to admit that one of my main reasons for waiting to visit Japan is to go to one of those huge arcades.
>>
>>16442933
There's no shame in that, it's one of the few "media" things that you can't experience fully from the comfort of your own home.

>Post about whatever arcade games you're currently spending time with

My 5 year arcade hiatus is coming to an end in mid February when Round 1 USA finally upgrades their Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune hardware. Before my 5 year hiatus I was hooked on Wangan Midnight maximum Tune until Namco decided to stop selling North America new hardware because of the money they were losing. I would rather not give out the details on how Namco was losing money because it's a long story and i'm sure not a lot of people are familiar with this game around here.

Other than that I played Melty Blood Act Cadenza and Actress Again. We had other imported arcade games and cabinets before all our arcdaes in SoCal decided to go out of business.

But like I fore mentioned, i will be back in mid February to Round 1 USA as well as the re opening of an arcade that closed down it's doors 4 years ago.

I'm not one to get too competitive about this stuff though. I like playing these arcade games for fun.

>>16442769
That looks like an arcade I frequented from 09-10 called Arcade Infinity. Where is this at? Or where was it?

Agreed.

If you want to share something specific or ask a specific question, do it. Nobody bitches about those unless you're asking "Where do I buy a futon???" for the hundredth time. But don't make a thread saying "Hey, I'm going to be permanently taking one of the 150 slots on this board. I have nothing to say, but gosh I sure hate other boards, especially the one which was fucking made exactly for this type of thread! Now people, please talk about my hobby for me because I don't have anything to say at the moment myself!"

>>
I go to Round1 and play rhythm games there. Sometimes if I see someone on a fighting game cab I go beat them up
>>
When I was in Japan I probably spent an entire day in an arcade grossly embarrassing myself at rhythm games and trying out the Kancolle cabinets. I was mostly looking for the games that had no players around them at the time so that nobody would bear witness to my failure, which I guess ended up mostly being Sound Voltex. Was mildly surprised at the number of Touhou doujin songs on some cabinets but I guess anyone who actually plays rhythm games learned that long ago.

I'm almost glad there's no proper arcade around for hundreds of miles because I feel like half of my free time and my money end up disappearing into them while trying to get good.

As a child, it was one of my dreams to one day own a legit Pong arcade machine. The first real mainstream arcade machine (excluding Computer Space). Any one for sale though was way out of my childhood budget.

Well one day when I was older, after many years of checking on ebay, I happened to come across one in perfect working condition for a good price, and I just happened to have the money for it from working. I was quite depressed too, so I thought that maybe fulfilling one of my childhood dreams would bring me some sense of happiness.
So I bought it.

After all these years, it wasn't until I actually had it in my room and plugged it in to play, that I realized it was a two player game and I had no one else to play it with.
Now it just collects dust. Thank you for reading my blog story.
>>
The arcade I grew up going to is so annoying since they'll have cool Jap games one month, and mysteriously they'll disappear the next. This happened a couple years ago when we got a Tekken 7 machine, and now it's gone. I swear this rich Vietnamese kid had his parents buy it for him, cause he was on it all the damn time.

Arcades have been long dead in this country. They already begun dying near the end of 90s. After 2000 I haven't seen a single cabinet anywhere, except for all kinds of poker and gambling machines.

There's actually one arcade which has a collection of non-recent Japanese machines about 200km away, but that's rprobably the only one.

It was cool to get to play all the wacky games in Japan last year. Museca was nice and casual for me.
>>
>>16445435
For what it's worth, that's really cool. Looks to be in good condition, too.
>>
HEY was really nice. I went there every day I was staying in Ueno/Tokyo station area.

Which other arcades have the older/more niche machines? I've seen a few with CAVE games, but only HEY had the RAIJIN and Toaplan games.
I hope no one was watching me play terribly when I was there. It was embarrassing.

If any of you are in Japan in April 2018, it would be nice to go to an arcade together. We could play the Mario Kart arcade game together or something, I'm sure it would be fun with anons.
>>
>>16445435
That's a beautiful and sad little story anon. I hope you find someone to play it with one day.
>>
>>16445456
Thanks. I'm quite happy with the condition. It works perfectly, has the original backboard, and came with the original schematics and repair papers. I know a bunch about old arcade machines, and you can tell from the knobs and coinbox that this was one of the original production machines. It has a little button sticking out for free plays, but I still prefer to use quarters.

>>16445466
Thank you, I hope so too. So far I've only played it with myself.

>>
>>16445435

I could rig up an autonomous robot with servos to play with you. Could even add voice to it so it will call you bad names and demand alcohol while playing. It wouldn't have to alter the cab in any way. It would just sit outside the cab and talk shit and play pong.
>>
I like the idea of this becoming a regular thing.

I've always had a love of arcade games even though I've rarely if ever been to a real arcade (did go to a US round 1 a few weeks ago though, that was pretty rad.)

Anyone know of good arcade platformers? They don't seem to be too prevalent.

I remember playing Liquid Kids in Mame and enjoying it.
>>
This thing really fucked with the market.

While Dragon's Lair bumped up the $.25 play to $.50 in some regions US operators wanted $1.00-$1.50 for one fucking play. It was the high end slot of Coin OP's during it's time. Most kids could either watch the demo over and over or wait for a richfag long haired Iron Maiden backpatch on his denim jacket wearing weed dealer or something and watch him play.

When i said 90s, it was more late 80s early 90s for me. Golden Axe, Green Beret, Mustang and a bunch of games that i don't even know the titles. Also who can forget the SF2 and Final Fight. SF2 literally started the fighting game craze spawning 'clones' like Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury and a bunch of others.

There is a cross promotion between sega and bamco for the banas to work on sega games and for the sega cards to work on bamco machines. How to save Jap arcades; actually release new SF, KoF, and Puyo Puyo games as cabs. The only people killing the arcades are the game devs/publishers. I'd like to see a company release an open source cab that indie devs could release their games on (like how the NeoGeo would play big-ass carts that arcade owners could buy for far cheaper than a brand new cab+board), it'd encourage a lot of new arcade experiences imo.
>>
>>16471649
I found some results when searching aime but nothing that interests me as much as banapass. Thanks for the help.
>>
>>16472009
most "indie" games have no chance in arcades, their general crappiness will be exposed by the players after one credit of play and then the owners would just throw the unplayed game out
>>
>>16472009
What could such a 'indie' cab offer that home consoles/PC/mobile couldn't? The focus of new titles has and needs to stay on offering physical experiences not easily replicated at home.
>>
>>16472009
SF never has been and never will be bigger than the top fighting games in Japanese arcades. Tekken and Blazblue would dominate it either way.

Obviously the same goes for KoF which is even less popular.

Any comments on the Crane games?
>>
>>16485793
Seriously? They're rigged.

American cranes games at least are rigged. They are programmed for you to spend at least 50% of the total MSRP of the item you are trying to win. No one ever wins in one try. Besides that you have to have crane game skills which means you have to know how to maneuver the crane to a position where you can win a certain prize that takes at least 10 tries. Not to mention the actual price of one credit. You are better off buying that same thing in a retailer instead.

Most people here won't even pay $20 once for most doujin games as a unlimited purchase. Granted, we're hardly representative of the population who actually pays for things, but you need people willing to shove credit after credit into those machines for weeks to make anyone even start to think of them as popular. Most doujin simply isn't going to be able to cut that mustard.

KOF is getting a Nesica 2 release, but that's probably not quite what you're looking for.
still wish the only place in the US with a Nesica hookup (Round 1) wasn't literally on the opposite side of the country as me
my "local' arcade (Arcade Odyssey down by Miami) has somewhat recent Japanese machines (also, the neatest thing was being able to play fucking Mushihimesama Futari Black Label on cab)
SF needed an arcade release, I dunno why they didn't bother.
Puyo Puyo is dead and has been for like eighteen years, this isn't like when Puyo Puyo 2 released and it was rivaling Super Turbo (well, SSF2X in popularity over there.
