It should be possible to make the text out of notches instead of peaks without affecting the audio quality noticably. That would, at best, sound like posterization, which is how MP3 lossiness works. I don't know any existing tools that do that, but I could look into it, I'm a DSP wizard.

Yes. Any music that uses distortion or synths with lots of high frequency content will look unintelligibly noisy. As long as you do it above 5khz, don't make any perfectly vertical lines, and don't make the "lines" too thick in general, it shouldn't be possible to notice that it's not compression artifacts or clipping or something without checking the spectrogram.

You could also encode it in sub-20hz bass, but where's the fun in that?

I'm the guy who made the original track

I originally wanted to do exactly what you're mentioning, but I couldn't seem to find any methods of notch-filtering an inputted bitmap image into existing audio. There's plenty of tools for doing what I already did with peaks and just adding it into the file, and you can generate a wall of white noise with text notched out, but I couldn't figure out a way of selectively notching existing files, or couldn't find the software. Tried to think of everything, from overlaying the same track with inverted phase to exporting song to spectrogram -> mspaint -> sound, but nothing really worked for me or I'm not smart enough for it.

I ended up throwing the message into a band from 15-22 khz, which made it invisible (at least to my ears) yet still visible on spectrogram. The bonus is that the original track I downloaded was missing the frequencies above 15khz anyway because lmao 128kbps.

At least I've found a way of creating fake FLAC from shit mp3 rips.

I don't know if those were around five years ago or so but if they were I would have used them. Most of the larger doujin shops didn't seem to acknowledge overseas buyers. I usually bought directly from artists and labels but I'd find myself padding my orders with crap I wasn't that interested in just make to make the shipping charges less painful.

Beyond that more than a few of the artists I like are nobodies who only seem to sell cheap 100 yen CD-R's at M3 and don't even bother trying to sell off their own sites or doing consignment with doujin goods stores.

Shipping costs are hardly painful at all. I can get 3.5 kg of CDs (costs around $400) for 6.6k yen shipping cost via EMS, which is cheap as shit. It's a 15% fee I pay so that I can get physical shit instead of downloading digital FLACs from Booth and Bandcamp. Booth and Bandcamp are good of course, but they're purely digital which is boring and standardized as hell. If every CD was a jewel case there'd be no reason to get physical; some artists go cheap and just burn a CDr at the event; some do oversized/irregular packaging, and actual physical booklets are way better than the mediocre scans packaged with the digital versions (if they do; usually it's just a picture of the album cover).

It's going to be a shit future if everything's going to be digital only.

What, the get tags from freedb option? Or can you transfer metadata from one mp3 file (the 160k version for example) to another? Also for 長尾ちえみ - [GrandSlam CD1 #02] Cornelia, the 160k file named it "cornalia" so I just ended up checking on Halozy's website for track and artist names to copy paste. Because they aren't all sung by emaru. And the track number was out of order for most songs. And the disk number was l instead of 1.

For this Halozy album, when I look at the flac's metadata (nevermind the file names) it doesn't seem wrong. But when I convert to mp3 for this album with audacity, the track number and title/artist get messed up. So I assumed the metadata was wrong in the first place (barring a problem with 7zip which I doubt).

I'm just confused because audacity has always not messed up tags/metadata in the past for me. Just tried converting the recent Demetori album and everything worked fine regarding that. Perhaps it would have been correct with Foobar so maybe I will try that later.

I thought Pizuya's Cell - 交錯ディストーション was really good by the way.

Oh, the red dots mean nothing other than to mark loud frequencies. The real FLAC is just much quieter than the OPUS I was provided or the FLAC I ended up making from it.

The real giveaway is that the real FLAC has variation in frequency response even past the original 6000Hz cutoff, whereas the fake is a monolithic block above 6000 that only varies in amplitude, not frequency.

In EAC you can just rip to split tracks instead of a single file, then you don't need to split. You can also rip to whatever lossless format you want, so you don't have to convert it afterwards.
99% of the time, files out of EAC are fine to just upload without changing anything.
