Why does this feel like it would lead to cheating? Or making it easier to tell whats left on the wall.

All the tiles in the game are basically drawn from a hole in the center of the table with gloves in order to prevent seeing what your draw would be.

The idea behind the game is to force players to be more creative with their waiting tiles because it can be easy to determine the exact tiles someone is waiting on depending on how many opaque and translucent tiles they have in hand.
>>
>>16414105
Depends what you mean by "tonight". I'll be happy to hop on in six hours

Well, it's European tonight, right here it's 1:30 AM already.
In fact I just played my first game of the night because every time I check the lobby it's 0:4.

How do I actually get better at this game, just by grinding out more bot games?

I've been playing on and off for about a month on the single-player gamedesign site, and honestly I'm lucky if I actually manage to place 1st or 2nd in a round. I think I'm just awful at reading discards and always deal into the bot's hands as a result.

Should I just try moving onto tenhou for experience?
>>
>>16424861
>Should I just try moving onto tenhou for experience?
I'd say go for it. Save for some good people making new accounts and whatnot, people in ippan are usually not particularly good, so you'll probably do just fine.
>>
>>16424861
>Should I just try moving onto tenhou

Absolutely, it'll be more fun and you'll learn faster.
>>
>>16424861
Don't bother reading discards until they riichi unless it's painfully obvious (like they make 3 calls). Just try to make a hand.

Ippan gives no reward for anything other than first so the players are already pretty aggressive, beyond the fact that they are filled with generally terrible players.
>>
>>16424861
Make a Tenhou ID then crawl your way out from general lobby. You're forced to think with limited time and suffer the consequences from doing stupid calls and discards.
>>
>>16424861
Realise that some lessons are hard learned. You will deal in and in hindsight hate yourself for it. This is normal but we're all in it together.

I've been playing (seriously) for a little over a year and still fuck up. Turn that rage into a desire to learn and grow.

If at all possible, try playing live. It'll make you even better

Hey guys I want to play Saki on the Vita again and I forgot what each of the rules did. The Youtube video I use got deleted so I want to know what rules I should use to make it the most Japanese mahjong-like.

I'm used to Cantonese mahjong so some of the rules I set may seem weird.

Can anyone translate this image for me?
>>
>>16426293
Top to bottom: game amount, game type (tonpuu/hanchan/1-hand), red dora, open tanyao Y/N, east round renchan (dunno/tenpai only/win only), south round renchan, bust, kiriage mangan (4 han 30 fu counts as mangan Y/N), skill, growth?, time per draw.
>>
>>16426293
Number of matches: 1 | 2
Match form: Tonpuusen | Hanchan | Ikkyokusen (one round game)
Akadora: No | Yes
Kuitan: No | Yes
East round renchan: None | Tenpai | Win
South round renchan: None | Tenpai | Win
Bust: No | Yes
Kiriage mangan: No | Yes
Special abilities: No | Yes
Character training active: No | Yes
Time limit: None | 5 sec | 10 sec

Character training refers to the points you can put into characters to make them stronger.

Then I'll keep it. I'm not used to seeing how score is being calculated; Cantonese mahjong only has han multipliers and fu calculations throw me off.

Also, is red dora standard?
>>
>>16426347
Common mahjong set usually has those tiles, but whether they're used or not depends on the ruleset. In case of Saki universe, the answer is yes.

This is a really broad question and I'm not even sure it can have a solid answer, but how does one work on deciding which hand to go for? What I mean by that is a majority of my hands (maybe as much as 3/4ths) are only worth 1-2 han. It seems the only time I really go for a specific hand is if I'm aiming for toitoi or chiitoi, so usually any time I happen to get a mangan or higher it's because of lucky dora tiles or yakuhai as well. So I guess I'm having issues with distinguishing what kind of hand to focus on if it becomes realistically possible. It's probably just something I need to work on by actively striving for better hands, but I thought I'd just ask.

Also, are non round or seat winds useless outside of specific hands?
>>
>>16433295
As a rule, focus on pin fu and/or tanyao and adjust from there. Don't open your hand unless you are almost certain what yaku you are going for. Riichi pin fu tanyao is already 3 yaku and with any dora, iipeikou, ippatsu, etc. it's a mangan.

If you have a bunch of one suit aim for honitsu or chinitsu, but be prepared to abandon it if neccesary.

>Toitoi
If you have pairs don't call until you know for sure you aren't going chitoitsu. If you have a couple of closed sets or yakupai then sure.

Yakupai by themselves are ok, but as you get to higher ranking you can get punished for opening your hand for cheap wins. If you have some dora as well then go for it.

Other than that it's mainly just be aware of when to chase kokushi or other yakuman.
>>
>>16433295
>Also, are non round or seat winds useless outside of specific hands?
If you have a pair it might bring you closer to tenpai (and riichi) and can give unusual waits. Single winds are usually worthless other than as safe discards when you need to betaori, although they can be good for chitoitsu waits.
>>
if you aint rolling toitoi your better off going for goygoy
>>
>>16433295
>how does one work on deciding which hand to go for?
Know the yaku, and the best way to attain them. By best, I mean "easiest".

After that, consider the dora. Sometimes, the dora will affect which yaku you decide upon. This includes the decision to open the hand, or remain closed.

After 40 games, I finally managed to get my rank up to 1550, and it only took 4 games to get it back down to 1450. Is the Ippan lobby usually this sporadic with ranking, or do I just eat ass? I don't think I played particularly poorly in those games, just some bad luck, which is to be expected, but it affected my rank much more negatively than playing decently affected my rank positively.

The R transfer formula factors in how many games you've played. It has a soft cap after about 400 games which greatly reduces how much R you win and lose.

But before that, your R will be pretty much a rollercoaster. I bet you could reach something ridiculous like 2000R before 3dan if you tried hard enough. Although I supposed playing against people who have hundreds of R less than you really limits how much you can gain.

Not trying to rub it it, there was hardly anything you could do in the other rounds, but you really fucked it up in S4.

You had two options, a 1-4s wait by dealing a risky 6s. You could see all of the 1s and two of the 4s, so you only had 2 winning tiles left, and not very good ones at that.

Or deal a safe 1s and go on a 6-9s wait, which had two of the 9s and three of the 6s left. It was objectively the better choice and you got punished immediately for not taking it. Sorry about it, man.

I don't get how you guys can get so angry at this game. Maybe I'm really new and fresh on the block (just started last week, playing with some buddies on and off in Tenhou), but with your hands all being randomized from the start, and the draws also being random (though I'm guessing you can make an educated guess on what you could possibly draw based on discards), it doesn't really feel like a big deal when I lose.

When I win, that's great! But I already have some pretty cathartic fun by turning off my brain, putting something in the background, and trying to get my four triplets and pair. Maybe I live in a simpler world and if I play too much of this I'll become jaded, but I don't really understand the alcoholic pessimism about this game.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm legitimately curious. It feels like it's the same thing as getting angry at card games or gambling when your draws are random and pretty much out of your control.

At least, when I play, I try to get comfy and that's the reward in itself.
>>
>>16452057
When I was new I also had the same opinion. But as I set a goal (striving to get into the Houou lobby) I became more serious about the game and would get upset for hours after I lost. I'm a perfectionist so this is pretty much one of the worst games for me to play.
>>
>>16452057
A lot changes when you get to higher ranks. Downranking is completely demoralizing because of how much work it is to climb up and you have no one to blame but yourself.

It gets noticeable around 3 dan where if you don't have all the basics down you won't advance (primarily learning defense).

4 dan specifically is harsh because either you just stepped into Tokujou and player skill skyrocketed, or more likely you have to grind up to R1800 and even getting third drags you farther away from it. Every time someone hits a cheap hand to stop your big ones that risk increases, because you can't hit big hands even half the time.

The penalties for fourth get progressively harsher, but the points you can earn stay the same until you advance a room and the players are significantly better. It will wear you down since you don't have control over most of the game in the first place.
>>
>>16452057
Mainly because while Tenhou is a competitive platform for mahjong, it's still essentially a gambling game.
Your most optimal discards can still backfire, your good shaped hand can still result in nothing, and even with all the best decisions you do in the game, the other 3 players can still outluck it.
It's not blaming for bad luck, just that the higher you put your expectation, the worse it can (and will) crash down.
>>
>>16454320
What's especially frustrating are the times where completely unlikely events keep happening and fucking you over
>>
>>16452057
>It feels like it's the same thing as getting angry at card games or gambling when your draws are random and pretty much out of your control.
Because it's not pure gambling. If you're just playing poker and you lose, that's fine because it's pure luck. Bluffing and all sure but there's little in terms of skill with the actual game - it's more human interaction and you can either say "my hand was bad" or "I was just outplayed and outbluffed". Those are the only two ways to lose in poker, either luck OR skill - not both, usually.
In Mahjong you can do literally everything right but still lose because TSUMO, RIICHI IPPATSU SANSHOKU PINFU JUNCHAN DORA 3 URA 3.

You guys are too focused on the short term, the only way to gauge skill in mahjong is by your stats over hundreds of games, so just stick to your playing style and what comes out of it will eventually reflect how viable your playstyle is against the opponents you face. But I won't deny pic related in the short term. You gotta stick it out until it balances out.

That's seriously tough. Toimen probably has a kanchan or penchan wait, as is the case with early riichi, but your kamicha is probably waiting on either high souzu or the ura sujis for 5 pin. Which means all pinzu are risky as fuck. Add to that toimen's wildcard statis and your complete lack of safe tiles, I'd toss 2sou

How'd it play out?
>>
>>16457923
Your hand's a minefield. I'd go with either the 2s or 7m.
>>
>>16457923
Gonna guess 2s is gonna get you ronned. I'd go for 3p since I'm the stupid guy that likes to know what people are waiting on. Smart choice is probably 1m and then hope that 4m can also pass and the round ends there. That's definitely a tough spot though, I'd deal in for sure knowing my luck and tendency to do stupid things.

He pursued a dealer riichi with a risky 5pin discard, even though he was on second place. It's not a stretch to think he could have the last 5pin and waiting on a 36p or a tanki/shanpon wait involving the dora. I'd rather avoid the pinzu tiles in this case.

It's S3 and I'm last place, feels bad. Maybe I wouldn't have played it safe in the beginning.
Well whatever, right now we're full betaori mode.
No safe tiles, half-suji 6p and 4s. But 6p is near the dora so it's out. 4s doesn't seem safe at all anyway. Only dangerous suji remain.
But 6m looks safer than the rest because usually, early tanyaohai discards means they don't need the tiles around them.
So I guess I go with 7m.
>>
>>16458611
You're dead son.

D called riichi on the 5p, a normal formation there is 455. The 6p is very dangerous to both players. There isn't anything that's actually safe, and the 1m discard is the least terrible option because if nothing else it means that if you do deal in it won't be tanyao on top of everything else.

Fuck, not hatsu, but haku. I'm tilting now.
>>
>>16444429
Just to make sure, but this would be exactly 4 hours and 30 minutes from now, right?
>>
>>16462294
No. it's at 10am PST, which is 15 minutes from now.

This Saturday at around this time in whatever time zone you are
>>
>>16462349
Ah, yeah, meant to say 4 days, not 4 hours. Thanks.

Anyone here participating?
>>
>>16462354
Would love to, but I'll probably be on the road.

from the early days of me playing mahjong (around 2011) i made ぱいろん my home for many years and got quite a few yakuman... you guys dont know how hard it was when the server shut down last summer... ;_; i miss the cozy comfy atmosphere of playing as cute 2d girls against useless NEETs all day and there will never be an alternative to it .. RIP
>>
>>16462775
I dunno what it's about but it's not that hard to program a mahjong game, especially one that's perfectly fair (i.e. the tile positions are generated before anyone draws), and even easier to add in pictures. The hard part is getting people to use it
>>
>>16462354
I kinda want to but I'd hate to be a no show or mess things up somehow.
>>
>>16462866
>The hard part is getting people to use it
And this stems on whether said mahjong program is a good one.

Since the effective demise of Osamuko, I and a few others have begun putting together a new site to collect information and publish new articles.

Awesome! Things like these help promote the game in the English speaking world
>>
>hit kamicha with dealer haneman

>As an added insult, toimen also Ron's, just to teabag him
>>
>Get nagashi mangan for the first time
Against two riichi's to boot. The irony is that I was defending and would have sued those terminals no matter what. Toimen could have called a few times to break it, but he never did. Guess it took them by surprise

what's the best mahjong game i can play using retroarch
>>
Anyone know how to enter a tournament lobby via the windows client?
>>
>>16472025
Same way you enter any other lobby.
>>
No one play ranked in Tenhou right now. The servers are shit right now. Everyone in my game has disconnected multiple times.
>>
>>16472060
thanks for the warning
>>
>>16472053
But the OK button gets grayed out if there's more than 4 characters, and the tournament lobbies seem to be 8 characters long
>>
>>16472060
Wew just finished a game earlier, dodged a bullet.
>>
>>16472100
It accepts eight characters as well. Are you sure you've got the right lobby number? Don't include the C at the start.
>>
Fuuuuck me. I didn't know renhou wasn't a yaku on Tenhou. I could've gone so much further with this hand.

Thanks that worked! I guess you have to add tournament lobbies manually to the config file for some reason?
>>
>>16472146
And sorry forgot to respond but yeah I was entering it correctly, no idea why it only worked by putting it straight into the config file.
>>
>>16472158
Sucks, doesn't it? You could've had a chiihou or a double riichi iitsu.

This is a small project I've been working on for fun, since I've seen some of the already translated stuff for Buu Mahjong is conflicting and doesn't make a lot of sense, or seems partially incomplete. I figure that you guys might find it interesting. I tried my best to be as thorough as possible in regards to the rules.

How many people here have signed up for the NARMA tournament?
>>
>>16482907
You won't get a good answer to that. I already see a couple names I recognize in the lobby 50 minutes early.

Also we need a new thread, since we are on page 10 and a tournament is about to start.
>>
>>16482907
Is it too late to sign up?
>>
>>16482937
Registration closed a couple days ago. Per the director there were 55 registered, 2 dropped out, and a 3rd is an alternate. We are at 52.
>>
>>16482937
Tournament's about to start in less than one hour, so yes it is. Unless you talk to the guy and he lets you sub for a no-show.
